After nine months of being in Southeast Alaska aboard The Alaskan Gypsy, it was finally time to point the bow north and commit to one of Alaska's most legendary passages: the Gulf of Alaska. Once we rounded Cape Spencer, there were few places to hide and hundreds of miles of open water ahead. What followed was more than 66 hours running nonstop at sea aboard our 80-foot steel schooner. The entire trip lasted 7 days for us and included around rolling swells, endless daylight, whales, porpoises, sunsets, wildlife, a surprise halibut, a surprise meeting up with friends, and even a visit to our past wilderness home site. This trip turned into more than just getting from Southeast to Homer. As we approached Kachemak Bay, memories of another chapter came flooding back. These are the waters where our family first began building the life that eventually led us here. The bays, anchorages, surf charters, old friends, and familiar coastlines that shaped so many years of adventure. Arriving aboard The Alaskan Gypsy felt less like reaching a destination and more like closing a circle. INSIDE GREAT LAKES SAILING SEASON SEVEN SHOW NO. 159 - One of the best sail racing fleets hit Lake Michigan this past week and competed in the GL-52's Big Red Regatta. We visited Macatawa Bay Yacht Club Saturday and chatted with a ton of folks who were involved in the race including those who know somwthing about the Jolly Madison Sailing Club, a great new Russian photographer who is brilliant, an outstandng host who made our visit successful, a North Sail loft manager who wants to know why age seems discriminatory and a public official who is trying to preserve the Big Red Lighthouse for another century. Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Seitdem lag Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, und der Refit hatte begonnen. Am 17 August 2025 ist es wieder so weit. Obwohl Squib noch nicht ganz fertig ist, werfen wir die Leinen los und starten unsere erste Etappe donauabwärts. Dreieinhalb Wochen später erreichen wir das Donaudelta, der Mast wird gestellt, ein passendes Wetterfenster abgewartet, in zwei Sclägen überqueren wir das Schwarze Meer bis zum Bosporus. Ohne Einzuklarieren mit gehisster Q Flagge durchqueren wir die Türkei und erreichen 5 Tage später die Ägäis. Über Limnos und die nördlichen Sporaden segeln wir bis in den Großraum Athen, von wo aus Sabina nach Hause fliegt, weil ihr Urlaub zu Ende ist. Un nouveau voilier de grand voyage performant signé Finot-Conq Le lancement de la construction du premier Cigale 15 QR ouvre un nouveau chapitre dans l’histoire de la gamme Cigale. Cette évolution du voilier de grand voyage rapide s’inscrit dans la continuité d’une lignée devenue, depuis les années 1990, une référence incontournable de la croisière hauturière. Conçu en collaboration avec le cabinet d'architecture navale Finot-Conq, à l'origine des premiers Cigale, ce nouveau modèle de 15 mètres associe performance, polyvalence et simplicité d'utilisation pour répondre aux attentes des navigateurs d'aujourd'hui. Il se prête aussi bien à la navigation en équipage réduit qu’aux croisières familiales ou aux longues traversées au large. Un voilier conçu pour aller vite, loin et partout Le Cigale 15 QR est né de la volonté d'un propriétaire passionné de disposer d'un bateau capable de parcourir de longues distances à un rythme soutenu, sans compromis sur la sécurité, le confort ou l'accessibilité des zones de navigation. De cette ambition est né un voilier moderne, marin et réactif, conçu pour les grandes traversées océaniques mais également capable d'explorer des mouillages peu profonds, des lagons ou des estuaires. Cette polyvalence repose sur l’un de ses atouts majeurs : sa quille relevable. Avec un tirant d'eau réduit à 1,62 mètre quille relevée, le Cigale 15 QR permet d’accéder à des zones habituellement inaccessibles à un voilier de cette taille. Une fois la quille abaissée, le tirant d'eau atteint 3,30 mètres, garantissant un couple de redressement optimisé et d’excellentes performances au près comme au portant. L'héritage Cigale enrichi des dernières avancées architecturales Pour concevoir ce nouveau modèle, Alubat s’est naturellement tourné vers le cabinet Finot-Conq, acteur historique de l’aventure Cigale, dont l'expertise s'illustre aussi bien dans le domaine du grand voyage que dans celui de la course au large. Le Cigale 15 QR bénéficie ainsi des dernières évolutions en matière d'architecture navale, d'équilibre des carènes et d'optimisation des masses. Sa coque à bouchains vifs favorise la stabilité de forme et les performances sous voile, tandis qu'un pan coupé courant sous le livet contribue à son identité visuelle tout en participant à l'allègement de la structure dans les hauts. Cette quête d’efficacité se retrouve également dans le plan de voilure avec un mât carbone en standard et un gréement sans pataras, directement inspirés des technologies issues de la course océanique. L'aluminium au service de la performance Fidèle à son ADN, Alubat réalise la construction du Cigale 15 QR en aluminium, un matériau plébiscité pour le grand voyage en raison de sa robustesse, de sa durabilité et du niveau de sécurité qu’il procure. Pour ce projet, le chantier a porté une attention particulière à l’optimisation du poids. Les épaisseurs de bordés sont adaptées en fonction des contraintes structurelles propres à chaque zone du bateau, permettant une répartition des masses maîtrisée sans compromettre la solidité indispensable à un programme de navigation hauturière exigeant. À bord, cette même recherche d’équilibre se traduit par des espaces lumineux, des lignes épurées et des matériaux sélectionnés avec soin pour concilier confort, fonctionnalité et légèreté, créant une atmosphère à la fois moderne, accueillante et propice aux longues traversées. Il participera à de grands rendez-vous nautiques, pourra prendre part à des programmes de course et sera également proposé à la location.
