He has sailed his Tiwal 3 dinghy on inland waters and the Great Lakes for over a year. Having grown up sailing a Pintail with his dad, he loves this boat's hybrid windsurfer-sailboat feel, keeping him close to the water. He thrills at fast-paced solo sailing in 20-to-25-knot winds, yet the deck is roomy and comfortable enough to take friends or his kids out on the water. This portable sailboat is brilliantly designed for quick rigging. He can fully rig it from its stowage bags in just twenty minutes, transporting them securely on his roof rack for family vacations. For short local trips, he leaves it inflated in his truck bed, launching in just five minutes. He notes that one must adapt sometimes: he once capsized with his youngest son, and a jammed swivel cleat caused them to roll over six times. However, once the technique is learned, righting the hull is incredibly easy. Thanks to this vessel, he achieved his goal of sailing all five Great Lakes, a feat impossible with a traditional sailboat. His favorite passage was crossing the Straits of Mackinac to Mackinac Island, a spot normally reached only by ferry or plane. Recently, he even joined the Tiwal fleet in Japan to sail the Pacific Ocean. In Memory of John Ripard Snr (1929 – 2026) This tribute honours John Ripard Snr, Honorary President of the Royal Malta Yacht Club, Olympian and one of the founders of the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Together with his brother Paul, Jimmy White and Alan Green, John helped bring the Middle Sea Race to life in 1968. He skippered Josian to victory in that first edition and won again in 1970 aboard Tikka II. More than half a century later, the race he helped create draws sailors from across the world to Malta each October. His passion for the sea and his generous spirit inspired generations of Maltese sailors, and his legacy continues through the John Ripard Course Record Trophy and the many members of the Ripard family who still race today. How do you decide whether risk of collision exists — and what if you are not sure? COLREGs Rule 7 explained clause by clause: all available means, radar scanning and plotting, scanty information, and the compass bearing test, shown with true-to-scale animation from the bridge, on the radar and from above. Every give-way and stand-on rule applies only once risk of collision exists, so Rule 7 comes first. In this episode, I go over the most common techniques for raising and lowering the kick-up rudder on a small sailboat. I created this episode in response to numerous recent discussions and questions with newer boat owners about how to raise and lower the kick-up rudder. In the video, I demonstrate my favorite technique for raising and lowering the rudder and also cover the other most common methods. Of course, some owners have replaced their factory rudders altogether for a RudderCraft rudder that uses and control line and a gas strut. Unfortunately, as of the making of this video, RudderCraft is no longer accepting orders for their performance rudders. So if you want to go with that option, you'll have to find a used one or buy a boat that already has the RudderCraft conversion. SIXT Spring Championship, Race 3 Mick Scully Memorial Trophy Sunday, 25 October 2026 Sydney Harbour The close racing of the first two weeks at the Australian 18 Footers League was missing in Race 3 of the SIXT Spring Championship when a strong North East wind on Sydney Harbour proved more than a handful for most of the new, young teams in the fleet today. Despite the conditions and having two replacement crew members onboard, the Yandoo team of Steve Thomas, Max Paul and Lewis Brake were brilliant as they powered their skiff around the 3-buoys course to victory by 4m34s. A race-long battle between the four challenging boats, Smeg (Ash Rooklyn, Ricky Bridge and Tom Quigley) took second place behind Yandoo. Third place and the series lead after three races went to The Kitchen Maker (Jordan Girdis, Josh Feldmann and Rory Cox), which finished a further 1m6s behind Smeg. The only other skiffs to complete the course were Vaikobi (Kirk Mitchell, Max Vos and Paddy Bannon) in fourth place and Killer Coffee Co (Ryan Ewings, Matt Stenta and Finn Rodowicz) in fifth. After the three SIXT Spring Championship races sailed so far, The Kitchen Maker leads the championship with a score of 14 points, followed by Yandoo on 15 points, Killer Coffee Co and Smeg, both on 19, then Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich) and Vaikobi on 23 points. Race 4 of the SIXT Spring series will be sailed next Sunday (1 November) in conjunction with Race 2 of the Australian 18 Footers League Club Championship. Yandoo, along with Balamin (Henry Larkings) and Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Keagan York) battled for the lead out of the start, but Yandoo gradually eased away off Rose Bay on the way to the weather marks off the Beashel Buoy. From her ‘scratch’ handicap, Yandoo had to go to the ‘Red’ mark (the furthest) but it didn’t make any difference to the incredible skiff, which seems able to win any type of race or series, with any crew, as it raced in the lead down the following spinnaker run to the wing mark off the southern end of Shark Island. Emma Rankin’s Club Marine was in second place at the first set of weather marks, ahead of Shaw and Partners, Killer Coffee Co, Vaikobi and Smeg, but Club Marine capsized after a problem with the spinnaker set. Yandoo was already more than 30s ahead of Shaw and Partners at the wing mark, followed by Killer Coffee Co, Vaikobi, Smeg, The Kitchen Maker and Lazarus Capital Partners. When Shaw and Partners capsized approaching the bottom mark off Clark Island, Killer Coffee Co grabbed second place ahead of Vaikobi, Smeg, Lazarus and The Kitchen Maker, but shortly after she capsized as well. With Yandoo already well over one minute ahead of the fleet, most interest centred on the battle between Vaikobi, Smeg and The Kitchen Maker. When Vaikobi capsized late in the race it left Yandoo, Smeg and The Kitchen Maker, the only three teams not to capsize during the race, as the three place getters. Race 4 of the SIXT Spring Championship and the Mondiale VGL Season Point Score will be sailed next Sunday.
