Welcome back to the channel, and we can't wait for you to see this video. Not because of the sailing (there was plenty of that in the last video), but because we explore the underside of Tonga in a way that we just couldn't believe. The diving there was spectacular, but swimming with the humpback whales takes the cake. In the video, I think I mentioned that Tonga is the only place in the world you can do this, and it turns out there are few others, but it is extremely rare. We spent a whole day on a private dive boat learning about these creatures and how to interact with them without bothering them. It's mostly mothers and their calves, with a couple of male protectors swimming with them. We had the most amazing time. We also enjoyed Tonga's laid-back, casual vibe, and geologically speaking, it is a really rare series of canals dug into this land mass to create these little fjords, just unusual. Anguilla should be on all sailor's lists to visit, if only for a short stay. Pristine beaches and beautiful coastlines make it worthwhile. Learn how to sail Anguilla while keeping the costs down in this video. Why did we go to Anguilla ? Anguilla is not a popular destination for sailors, but of course we had to find out why. We had heard it was simple math. Anguilla’s entry fees were unreasonably high. Anchoring in Road Bay is free. You can make it your home base and then rent a car or scooters to see the rest of the island. Or you can pay anchoring fees per night. Your rate is based on your boat’s registered tonnage. Gross Tonnage? Net tonnage? The gross tonnage is the volume of all enclosed spaces of the ship. Our Leopard48 boat weight specs 37000 pounds dry weight, and if you convert to tons 18.5. Gross tonnage is supposedly 55 – Net tonnage around 45. Remember this is a volumetric measure that has nothing to do with physical weight. Our USCG registration said 37 tons, so guess what we paid. Too much! We decided to invest for 2 nights. *Harbour Fees – yachts up to 20 tons - $50. *Cruising Permit Fees as of 2022 publication – to go anywhere other than Road Bay. **5 to 20 tons– $225 EC ($85US) /day. **Over 20 tons - $560 EC ($207US) /day. You may only anchor overnight in NON Marine Park areas. This week, we tried to dig the sewer trench from our house to the septic tank — and quickly found out that our rocky mountain lot was not going to make it easy. While the drywall crew was inside hanging sheets and turning the interior into actual rooms, we were outside trying to get the utilities sorted before the next big step on the build. We had to clear the future porch slab area, add drainage for one of the lowest spots around the house, connect the water line, and run the sewer line across the yard. The sewer trench ended up being the main challenge. We hit hard rock, ran into the wrong fittings, had to sleeve part of the pipe for vehicle traffic, and spent a lot of time checking and re-checking the fall so the line would drain properly. By the end of the week, the house had drywall, water, and sewer — which felt like a pretty solid bit of progress.
