SIXT Spring Championship, Race 3 Mick Scully Memorial Trophy Sunday, 25 October 2026 Sydney Harbour The close racing of the first two weeks at the Australian 18 Footers League was missing in Race 3 of the SIXT Spring Championship when a strong North East wind on Sydney Harbour proved more than a handful for most of the new, young teams in the fleet today. Despite the conditions and having two replacement crew members onboard, the Yandoo team of Steve Thomas, Max Paul and Lewis Brake were brilliant as they powered their skiff around the 3-buoys course to victory by 4m34s. A race-long battle between the four challenging boats, Smeg (Ash Rooklyn, Ricky Bridge and Tom Quigley) took second place behind Yandoo. Third place and the series lead after three races went to The Kitchen Maker (Jordan Girdis, Josh Feldmann and Rory Cox), which finished a further 1m6s behind Smeg. The only other skiffs to complete the course were Vaikobi (Kirk Mitchell, Max Vos and Paddy Bannon) in fourth place and Killer Coffee Co (Ryan Ewings, Matt Stenta and Finn Rodowicz) in fifth. After the three SIXT Spring Championship races sailed so far, The Kitchen Maker leads the championship with a score of 14 points, followed by Yandoo on 15 points, Killer Coffee Co and Smeg, both on 19, then Lazarus Capital Partners (Tom Cunich) and Vaikobi on 23 points. Race 4 of the SIXT Spring series will be sailed next Sunday (1 November) in conjunction with Race 2 of the Australian 18 Footers League Club Championship. Yandoo, along with Balamin (Henry Larkings) and Shaw and Partners Financial Services (Keagan York) battled for the lead out of the start, but Yandoo gradually eased away off Rose Bay on the way to the weather marks off the Beashel Buoy. From her ‘scratch’ handicap, Yandoo had to go to the ‘Red’ mark (the furthest) but it didn’t make any difference to the incredible skiff, which seems able to win any type of race or series, with any crew, as it raced in the lead down the following spinnaker run to the wing mark off the southern end of Shark Island. Emma Rankin’s Club Marine was in second place at the first set of weather marks, ahead of Shaw and Partners, Killer Coffee Co, Vaikobi and Smeg, but Club Marine capsized after a problem with the spinnaker set. Yandoo was already more than 30s ahead of Shaw and Partners at the wing mark, followed by Killer Coffee Co, Vaikobi, Smeg, The Kitchen Maker and Lazarus Capital Partners. When Shaw and Partners capsized approaching the bottom mark off Clark Island, Killer Coffee Co grabbed second place ahead of Vaikobi, Smeg, Lazarus and The Kitchen Maker, but shortly after she capsized as well. With Yandoo already well over one minute ahead of the fleet, most interest centred on the battle between Vaikobi, Smeg and The Kitchen Maker. When Vaikobi capsized late in the race it left Yandoo, Smeg and The Kitchen Maker, the only three teams not to capsize during the race, as the three place getters. Race 4 of the SIXT Spring Championship and the Mondiale VGL Season Point Score will be sailed next Sunday. Small Crack, Big Boat Job - An Insurance Dilemma Welcome back to Trinidad, our catamaran and a new round of boat work. This week we're throwing ourselves into a big job to solve a small problem. During our insurance survey, cracks in the weld that hold the bushings in place for the cross bar were deemed unfit for purpose. Although these cracks predate the ownership of our floating home, this time the message was clear no repair no insurance. It's an insurance dilemma. To repair the weld we need to remove the forestay and disconnect the crossbeam. A big job to correct a small problem. Five hundred miles offshore, making our way across the Atlantic aboard Osprey, and we've encountered a weather system that's forcing us to reconsider our routing options. Every routing solution seems determined to send us hundreds of miles north, some almost as far as St. John's, Newfoundland, adding perhaps five hundred unnecessary miles to our passage. The problem is that the routing software is missing one very important option: the ability to stop. So that's exactly what we've done. With winds of thirty-five to forty knots, we've stopped the boat and settled into a much more comfortable and stable situation. Instead of pushing the boat and crew through difficult conditions, we're allowing the weather to move through while we take the opportunity to rest, attend to personal equipment, catch up on small jobs and recover some energy. We'll probably spend around twelve hours like this. When we get moving again, the crew will be refreshed, the boat will have avoided unnecessary punishment, and the weather should allow us to pick up a much more direct route towards Lanzarote, closer to the great circle. We also take a look around below decks and discuss our freshwater arrangements. Osprey's original water tanks are showing their age, with scale and contamination concerns making them unsuitable for drinking water. It's another practical challenge of operating an older offshore racing yacht, and one that requires careful management. But the bigger message of this episode is about seamanship. Knowing when and how to stop a sailing boat is every bit as important as knowing how to make it go fast. Whether that's heaving to, lying ahull or deploying a parachute sea anchor, the appropriate method depends on the boat and the conditions. Understanding those options, practising them and knowing how your own boat behaves can make an enormous difference when difficult weather arrives. Stopping isn't necessarily losing time. Sometimes it's the most efficient route forward. And perhaps more importantly, it gives both the boat and the people aboard the opportunity to recover, physically and psychologically, before continuing the voyage. We're taking on one of the most notorious stretches of water in the United States — Cape Hatteras! After some last-minute maintenance and final preparations in Cape Charles, Virginia, we set off on a 230-mile, 33-hour offshore passage around Cape Hatteras, a place infamous for dangerous seas, unpredictable weather, and countless shipwrecks. But we got lucky! The weather was almost TOO calm. With barely enough wind to fill our sails, we ended up motoring through one of the most feared stretches of coastline on the East Coast. A full look around balcony cabin L254 on P&O Azura — Deck 15, the Lido Deck. It's one of the smaller groups of cabins on the ship, sitting on the same deck as the pools and the buffet rather than on one of the main accommodation decks below. That brings a few trade-offs worth understanding before you choose it, and we go through them properly in this video. A Lido Deck cabin puts you a very short walk from the pool deck and the buffet, which some Escapaders like a great deal. Others would rather be further from the footfall. Neither view is wrong — it depends on how you use the ship during the day. One thing worth doing before you book any cabin: look at the deck plan above and below you, not just your own deck.
