Join us as we sail into the remote and enchanting Aeolian Islands of Alicudi and Filicudi, two of the most untouched jewels off the coast of Sicily. These islands feel like stepping back in time — with no cars on Alicudi, mule paths winding up the volcanic slopes, and the serene silence of an island largely untouched by tourism. On Filicudi, we explore the charming harbor of Pecorini a Mare, the prehistoric village of Capo Graziano, and the dramatic volcanic cliffs, including the iconic La Canna sea stack rising out of the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea. From anchoring in crystal-clear waters to discovering local traditions and savoring the authentic simplicity of Aeolian island life, this journey captures the magic of sailing to places where nature and history remain in perfect balance. If you’ve ever dreamed of venturing beyond the more famous Aeolian Islands like Lipari or Stromboli, this episode reveals why Alicudi and Filicudi are the true hidden treasures of Sicily. Sailing into Castellammare del Golfo was a true highlight of our Sicilian journey. From the deck, the picturesque harbor and medieval castle immediately set the stage for discovery. We spent an entire day walking through the charming town, exploring narrow streets lined with local shops, open piazzas filled with cafés, and viewpoints overlooking the turquoise coast. We visited the sandy beaches along the bay, admired the dramatic cliffs of the surrounding coastline, and captured the incredible views that make Castellammare so memorable. By night, the town came alive with music, restaurants, and buzzing nightlife—perfect for soaking in authentic Sicilian culture. Our adventure included more than sightseeing: we met with a local charter captain who shared insider stories of sailing this coast, explored real estate options during a casual house search, and experienced the rhythms of daily life in this vibrant fishing town. This video blends sailing, culture, food, and lifestyle into one immersive experience of Castellammare del Golfo. Whether you’re dreaming of sailing Sicily, considering life here, or just curious about what makes this destination so unique, come along with us as we dive into everything this coastal gem has to offer. We cast off from Trapani and cross into the Egadi, making Favignana our base to explore the archipelago’s history, stone, and sea. On Favignana, by sea, by bike and walking, we show you the Ex Stabilimento Florio tuna factory museum brings the Florio legacy and the mattanza to life and we swim, sail and film at the signature bays —Cala Rossa, Bue Marino, Cala Azzurra, and Grotta Perciata—where the shoreline’s dramatic “steps” and caves reveal centuries of tufo (calcarenite) quarrying that literally shaped the island’s landscape and culture. We show how quarrying carved wind-sheltered cuts and ipogei and left amphitheatre-like cliffs that make these bays so photogenic. We filmed the entire Giardini Impossibile (Garden of the Impossible), a garden built around the tufo caves by a Sicilian woman in the 1960s that saved the failing calcarenite industry from a destiny of refuse into a destiny of beauty. Because the Egadi Marine Protected Area protects vast prairies of Posidonia and regulates anchoring and access by zones and seasonal buoy fields, we choose the smart plan: leave the boat and ferry to Levanzo and Marettimo when wind, holding, or restrictions make anchoring impractical. On Levanzo we highlight the Faraglione. On Marettimo we film the hike to the Castello di Punta Troia, now home to a small museum/observatory, and peek into sea caves that fringe the wildest of the three islands. This episode blends passage planning with on-shore culture—stone, tuna, and timeless blue—so you can copy the route with confidence. Tell us your favorite Egadi cove or quarry in the comments to help other cruisers plan. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean. We sailed from Capo D'Orlando to Cefalù . Unlike other sailors who might be satisfied with the mesmorizing anchorage near the castle, we really investigated the historic center and boy is it worth it. It's considered one of the top 5 highlights of Sicily so to miss it is a travesty. We begin at the heart of the old town, the Piazza del Duomo, where the majestic Cefalù Cathedral dominates the skyline. Built in the 12th century by Norman King Roger II, this UNESCO World Heritage site features impressive Arab-Norman architecture, stunning mosaics, and twin towers that rise dramatically above the town. From there, we wander through narrow cobbled streets, lined with artisan shops, quaint cafés, and medieval stone buildings. Along the coast, we visit the Old Port and the ancient Lavatoio Medievale — a beautifully preserved medieval washhouse with freshwater springs flowing through stone basins beneath vaulted arches. Don’t miss the breathtaking views from La Rocca di Cefalù, a dramatic cliff that overlooks the town and offers panoramic vistas of the coastline and cathedral below. At the summit, you’ll find ruins of the Temple of Diana, evidence of Cefalù’s pre-Roman past. Our tour ends at the Lungomare, Cefalù’s golden-sand beach, where locals and travelers come together to swim, relax, and watch the sunset over the Mediterranean. Whether you're drawn by history, architecture, beaches, or breathtaking scenery, Cefalù is a must-see destination in Sicily. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean. Sailing Sicily’s north coast, we cast off from Palermo and hop our way to Trapani with smart, protected anchorages that make this route a pleasure—not a slog. We work the lee behind Capo Gallo/Mondello before sliding past the dramatic Faraglioni of Scopello and the coves of the Zingaro Reserve. A calm night in Castellammare del Golfo gives us time to wander the waterfront and explain why this bay is such a reliable stop for cruisers. Along the way we break down what makes each anchorage “logical” (approach, shelter from prevailing winds/swell, dinghy access) so you can plan your own passage. We detour ashore to the Mangiapane Cave near Custonaci—an astonishing rock-shelter hamlet frozen in time—then continue past San Vito lo Capo and the clear waters of Macari/Cornino. In Trapani we take the cable car up to medieval Erice for sweeping views and a taste of almond pastries and Genovesi. Back at sea level, we film a practical tutorial: how to fuel in cross-winds safely, including spring lines, prop-walk, and leaving cleanly. Foodies, don’t miss our plates of Busiate alla Trapanese and Cous Cous al Pesce—two must-try local specialties. If you’re cruising this coast, this episode packs route logic, shore highlights, and seamanship tips into one watch. Drop your favorite north-coast stop in the comments so others can add it to their plan. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean. I have put the word sailing in quotes because of course we are not sailing our family, but as you know this is the nomenclature for all our sailing adventures. In this case, we have finally landed in Sicily, after buying the boat in Cyprus, sailing it to Turkey, then Greece, then Albania, and we have finally arrived in the land of my ancestors. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean. We help anyone who wants to sail the Mediterranean, whether they are brand new at it, aspiring to go, or just arm-chair traveling. We generally post about our adventures with beautiful scenery and helpful hints. In this case, we have tried to recreate the experience of meeting our Sicilian family for the first time, what we did, what it felt like, who they are, and most importantly, who we are when we are around all this love and connection. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.

This isn't just a crossing—it's a passage through history, culture, and personal connection. In this episode, we sail across the Strait of Messina, one of the Mediterranean’s most notorious and beautiful challenges. Battling three competing currents and surrounded by large commercial vessels, we journey from Porto Bolaro and Scilla on the Calabrian coast to Milazzo and Tindari in Sicily. We witness a sea full of kite surfers, pass awe-inspiring cliffside bridges, and explore the traditions of sword fishing—including the roles of lookout and harpooner. But the heart of this journey lies ahead: a long-awaited reunion with my Sicilian relatives, many of whom I will meet for the first time, coming together from villages across the island. This is an emotional crossing—one that ties sea, culture, and ancestry into a single unforgettable voyage. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean. For us, sailing in Calabria has been about family and re-discovering our roots. My Grandfather left as a young man, before World War II started and emigrated to America. My father's brother, "Luigi" stayed in Italy, fought in the war, was captured by the British in Africa, was a prisoner of war for many years and returned to fight for the resistance. His wife was pregnant with their first child, Marisa, when he left and Chiara was born when he returned to his family. His grandchild, Francesco married Francesca and had two beautiful children, Louise and Mikaela. They visited us at the Port of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Rochelle, Calabria. This episode is dedicated to their lineage, and mine, and shows footage of both our visit as well as footage of Uncle Luigi in the War, including his time as a prisoner and ultimate release. Our channel is generally all about sailing the Mediterranean. We help anyone who wants to sail the Mediterranean, whether they are brand new at it, aspiring to go, or just arm-chair traveling. In this heartfelt episode, we sail along the rugged coast of Calabria to discover the hidden gems of Crotone and Le Castella. While the breathtaking sight of the Aragonese Castle on Punta Cannone steals the show, it’s the warmth of the people that truly defines this journey. From a generous salumeria padrone who treated us to mozzarella and prosciutto tastings, to a local homeowner who opened their doors (and hearts) to share the town's rich history, this adventure became so much more than just sailing. Come aboard as we uncover the soul of southern Italy—one anchorage and one unexpected encounter at a time. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean.
