We head down to a local breakers here in Townsville to grab some replacement parts, but after putting it all back together, things go from bad to worse. A closer look under the hood reveals the engine is completely rotted out and totally worthless. RIP outboard. 🪦 Desperate to get back on the water, we jump on Facebook Marketplace and find another secondhand outboard. It looked great running on the stand, but let’s just say we got completely ripped off. The Keadby Lock repair was slowly coming together, and it had begun to operate for about one hour twice a day. Because timing the departure now required the highest degree of accuracy, our tidal calculations for the River Trent were becoming crucial. While we waited for the lock to be repaired, as issue with our canal boat’s fan belt held us back and cocked up our plans... We needed replacements, but without an address, it was proving difficult to arrange delivery. It’s these little things that can cock up your plans. We've left Isabella and are becoming dirt dwellers, swallowed the anchor, and moved to the hard. Well...not really. You know living on Isabella is a joy for us and we have left her only temporarily for a visit with family and friends in Southern California. Join us to learn about our preparations to secure our boat before going ashore. Isabella is secured to the dock with 3/4 inch dock lines at her stern, bow and spring lines which come out from midship to cleats on the dock. When we leave, all those are checked and often doubled up for extra support. She weighs 50,000 pounds so in a big blow Isabella can really tug on the dock cleats and we don't want her cruising away without us. Beyond that, plants have to be moved around, some thru hulls will be closed and the water pump will be turned off. We definitely don't want to come back to a flooded home. Making sure the reverse cycle air conditioners' strainers are clean and which unit to leave on. We sail deeper into northern Norway, timing a tidal gate, navigating narrow fairways, refuelling in a shallow harbour, anchoring in a wild bay, and finally entering the spectacular Trollfjord by sailboat. In this episode of Sailing Polaris, we leave early in the morning to catch the current through one of the few tidal gates on our route. With up to three knots of tide helping us along, we follow a narrow and shifting fairway used by larger vessels, where the charted depths may not always match reality. After arriving in Lødingen, we manoeuvre Polaris, our 46ft Bavaria sailing yacht, into a small and shallow harbour to refuel. What looks tight and questionable on the charts turns out to be manageable in calm conditions, although the diesel price is another matter. From there, we continue towards a remote anchorage among skerries, rocks and northern wildlife. The next morning brings a calm and protected anchorage, a scenic route through narrow channels, and a perfect weather window for a long-awaited bucket-list destination: Trollfjord. With flat seas, blue sky, snow-covered mountains, falling-rock warnings and an eagle overhead, Trollfjord feels both beautiful and severe. But northern Norway still sets the limits. Deep spring snow and avalanche risk force Catherine to turn back from planned hikes, leaving us with unfinished business in this dramatic Arctic landscape. After sailing through the busy Singapore and Malacca Straits, we thought the hardest part was behind us. Instead, we found ourselves navigating through hundreds of fishing boats and nets as we continued north towards Pangkor. Fortunately we made this section of the passage in daylight, giving us a front-row seat to some of the most fascinating fishing boats we've ever seen. After days at sea, it was a welcome relief to finally get ashore. We explore Pangkor by dinghy and paddleboard, enjoy some much-needed beach time with the boys, and take care of a few essential boat jobs before continuing north. Along the way we discover a plastic bag wrapped around the propeller, inspect a second-hand carbon jib, replace a worn autopilot ball joint, stock up on fuel, and prepare for the next stage of our journey towards Langkawi and Thailand. After years of planning, researching, sourcing parts, and redesigning, we're finally building one of the most important systems on ROAM: our DIY lithium house battery bank. Instead of purchasing pre-packaged marine batteries, we imported individual 2.3-volt lithium cells directly from China and built the entire system ourselves. Why? Two reasons: cost and space. By building our own batteries, we saved approximately $40,000 compared to equivalent marine battery systems. Just as importantly, we were able to dramatically increase our energy storage density within the limited space available aboard the boat. More power, less space, and a lot more work. Our final design consists of: 🔋 Four 48-volt batteries for the primary house bank 🔋 Two 24-volt batteries for equipment not available in 48 volts ⚡ Enough stored energy to support our goal of comfortable off-grid cruising Building the bank turned out to be far more involved than simply stacking cells together. We started by constructing a custom battery box to provide a perfectly flat and level foundation. We added anti-arc protection, a Mylar isolation layer to reduce friction, and developed a somewhat unconventional tie-down system designed to keep the cells secure even in extreme conditions. Along the way, we faced plenty of challenges. Finding room for the BMS units, bus bars, contactors, fuses, and cabling while maintaining a clean layout proved harder than expected. After changing the cell arrangement partway through the build, we had to purchase new BMS sense wires and rethink portions of the installation. The result isn't quite as tidy as we'd envisioned, but it's safe, functional, and delivers exactly what we set out to achieve. Like many parts of this refit, it's a system we'll continue refining as we move closer to launch. Ma durante questa navigazione non è andato tutto come previsto. Nel cuore della notte un imprevisto ci ha costretto a intervenire mentre il mare continuava a farsi sentire. Salut les loulous 🚮 Je me suis engagé auprès d’une fondation dédiée à la protection des tortues marines. Très rapidement, j’ai participé à une opération de nettoyage sur une plage envahie par des bouteilles en plastique et de nombreux déchets abandonnés. Au fil de la journée, notre équipe a collecté plus de 2 160 kg de détritus. Voir une telle quantité de déchets retirée de l’environnement a été particulièrement marquant. Cette action concrète en faveur de la planète et de la préservation de la faune marine m’a procuré un véritable sentiment de satisfaction. Le lendemain, je me suis consacré à la remise en état du bateau. J’ai commencé par préparer et repeindre le cockpit en appliquant deux couches de peinture. J’en ai également profité pour poncer et vernir les bancs en bois, afin de leur redonner un aspect neuf et de mieux les protéger contre les intempéries. Une fois ces travaux terminés, il ne restait plus qu’à réaliser l’antidérapant . J’ai appliqué une généreuse couche de revêtement antidérapant sur le sol. Hoy vamos a revisar un velero Bavaria Lagoon 39 para su compra. Me llama un cliente que ha visto un anuncio en una plataforma de compra venta. Empezamos la visita y a primera vista ya nos damos cuenta de que las fotos no son actuales. Los techos están todos con marcas de haberse mojado y los barnices están dañados. Eso sí, el camarote de popa está muy bien. En el anuncio pone que tiene aire acondicionado. Primeramente el generador no está en su sitio, por lo que solo valdría para el pantalán, pero es que el aire acondicionado no funciona y han desmontado gran parte de los conductos. Me parece increíble que te hagan viajar desde 1275km con unas fotos falsas. Es fácil saber que el cliente no te va a comprar el barco y que se va a agarrar un cabreo monumental...

Com a companhia da Déia e do Maurício, partimos em uma expedição de bote para Penedinho, uma vila próxima em Piaçabuçu, Alagoas. Um lugar que, curiosamente, é invisível no Google Maps, mas pulsa com vida, cultura e uma identidade profundamente ligada ao rio. Navegamos por canais estreitos, conhecemos o Seu Brás e sua canoa Bruce Lee, e descobrimos o artesanato e o comércio local que sustentam a comunidade. De volta ao veleiro Balanço, o paraíso mostrou sua outra face. As mesmas plantas aquáticas que enfeitavam a paisagem se transformaram em ilhas flutuantes, ameaçando arrastar nossa âncora e o barco junto. O que era poético virou um trabalho braçal, uma luta constante contra a força silenciosa da correnteza. Essa experiência, de lidar com a abundância e o perigo do rio, me levou a uma reflexão profunda sobre o modo de vida que escolhemos. Aqui, a água e o peixe são como o maná que caía do céu: um sustento diário que ensina sobre confiança e simplicidade. Uma lição que nossa civilização, com suas geladeiras e estoques, se esforçou para esquecer.
