Infusing the boat in a vacuum-sealed bag is one of the most critical and precise stages of the composite build process. This timelapse takes you behind the scenes as we prepare the mould for infusion, a stage that determines the strength, weight, and finish of the final structure. You’ll see how we lay down multiple layers of reinforcement, peel ply, flow media, and resin feed lines before sealing the entire mould under vacuum. Every joint, tape, and fitting is carefully checked for leaks to ensure a perfect vacuum draw. The goal is even resin distribution and complete fibre wet-out resulting in a strong, lightweight laminate with minimal voids. This is where craftsmanship meets engineering combining advanced materials, careful planning, and years of experience to deliver a flawless infusion. The Allen factory, based in Southminster, Essex in the UK, makes many of the deck hardware and fittings that we use in our sailing, be that on dinghies or keelboats. The team are constantly innovating - designing new products, trying out cutting-edge manufacturing techniques - all with the aim of making our time on the water more enjoyable. On my tour around the factory with Ben Harden I met a passionate and dedicated workforce using a range of machinery, from the traditional to the latest in CNC machining and 3D printing. The team also support grass roots sailing, and I took a look at how they were helping Otter Week at nearby Burnham-on-Crouch. There were a few surprises along the way as well. For example, did you know that Allen made masts? They also work with the stuntman industry! Two years in the tropics have taken their toll on Fair Isle so the time has come to put things right. We have a long list of jobs to do and we need to do something about our top sides. We are in a very good yard in Portimåo, Portugal who are able (if the weather plays ball) to spray paint outside, so we are facing a lot of prep work to get that going.
