Welcome back aboard Moor R & R for this week's Adventure! Episode 41 This week on Moor R & R, our plans changed quickly as we left Cape Richards after a rolley night at anchor in search of calmer waters. Our next stop was the breathtaking Dunk Island, and it certainly didn't disappoint. With crystal-clear water, lush rainforest, and beautiful beaches, it's easy to see why this tropical paradise is a favourite. We hiked to the stunning Muggy Muggy Beach, soaking up the incredible scenery along the way. From there, we ventured across to Mould Island, a protected bird sanctuary that's only open to visitors during certain times of the year. It's a peaceful and unique little island that few people get the chance to experience. With forecasts predicting strong winds of 25 knots or more over the coming days, it was time to make a dash north to Cairns before the weather arrived. Breaking up the journey, we spent a night at the spectacular Fitzroy Island, and after seeing just how beautiful it is, we already know we'll be back to explore more. In this episode, we leave Socotra behind and begin a 1,248 nautical mile journey through some of the most challenging and dangerous waters of our voyage. But as we leave, the situation in the region is rapidly escalating, with the conflict between the US and Iran making an already dangerous passage feel even more uncertain. Our route takes us across the Gulf of Aden, through the Bab-el-Mandeb and past the Hanish Islands — a notorious stretch of water with a long history of piracy. With tensions rising and the threat of conflict adding another layer of uncertainty, we know this is going to be a passage unlike any other. Along the way, we are approached by a skiff which, thankfully, turns out to be a fishing boat rather than pirates. We trade a few tins of food with the fishermen before continuing our journey. After 10 days at sea, we finally arrive in Suakin, Sudan, but our challenges aren't over. We soon discover that widespread GPS spoofing has made our chart plotters unreliable, leaving us without a usable electronic position. With no electronic charts available to help us navigate, we need to find another way to determine exactly where we are. Chris explains how we use Starlink as a positioning service and, in a rather unconventional setup, feed that position data back into our chart plotter and NMEA network. It's a fascinating technical solution to a very real navigation problem — and another reminder that when you're sailing in some of the world's most remote waters, you need to be prepared when the technology you normally rely on suddenly stops working. Day 4 aboard the FPY 70S couldn’t have been more different from Day 3. Zero wind, calm seas, and a full day of motor-sailing. During my night watch, we had some fog roll in and quite a bit of traffic as we got closer to the coast. It gave me a chance to really appreciate the interior helm station and the layout around it. The coffee bar sits right beside the helm, which gave me a great spot to stand, keep the binoculars handy and get a better look ahead before settling back in at the helm. It’s a small detail, but one I really appreciated during a busy watch—and another part of this boat I’ve enjoyed getting to experience properly while underway. One more day to go. Sassnitz in Germany is becoming known for its high speeds, and the teams were using the 18 metre rigs and high speed foils, which are currently the fastest combination in the F50 catamarans. Note this is an instantaneous speed on the bear away after the reaching start, so cannot be compared with the world speed record run of 65.45 knots by Sailrocket 2, which was the average speed over 500 metres. Nevertheless, hitting 107.63 kilometres per hour, or 58.11 knots, is hugely impressive. The teams were once again competing in two groups with Group A consisting of Spain, Switzerland, New Zealand, France, Denmark, Italy and Brazil and Group B comprising of Sweden, Canada, the United States, Australia, Germany and Great Britain At the end of the first day it’s the antipodean teams in the lead, with the New Zealand Black Foils heading Group A, and the all-conquering Bonds Flying Roos topping Group B. The boats are Va Bene, our 1980 Morgan 382, and Panache, our Morgan 384. They're closely related Ted Brewer-designed cruising boats, but getting two older sailboats ready for charter—and then handing the keys over to other sailors—has been an education. So… did our charter gambit work? At the halfway point, the answer is: the jury is still out. In this mid-season update, we talk about what's gone right, what's gone wrong, some of the surprises we've encountered, and what we're learning about the realities of putting privately owned sailboats into charter. Along the way we visited the Maheno shipwreck, walked along Eli Creek, watched dingoes moving along the beach, explored the forest at Central Station, and stopped at Wanggoolba Creek, where the water was so clear it was almost difficult to see. What stayed with us most was the variety of the island. Sand is everywhere, but so are forest, freshwater, wildlife, history and places that still feel remarkably wild. A beautiful, easy passage into the Exumas ends with Dark Angel threading her way through shallow water, coral and rocks. We cruise from Long Island to Hog Cay Cut in the Exumas. Dave pulls the new port engine raw water pump to track down an oil leak and discovers the supplied O-ring was oversized, crushed and damaged. An O-ring salvaged from the old pump gets us back together. We raise the main and genoa hoping for enough wind to sail the 16-hour passage, but spend most of it motor sailing through calm seas and absolutely gorgeous water. Hog Cay Cut is a very different kind of beautiful. Arriving a couple of hours after high tide means I am on the bow watching the shallow water for coral and rocks as we thread Dark Angel through the narrow cut. 220 MILES. 4-METRE SWELLS. ONE SMALL BOAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC. 🌊 Leaving the remote atolls of French Polynesia, we faced a decision that every offshore sailor eventually has to make: When is the right time to go? We needed to get back to Tahiti. Friends were arriving, and ahead of us lay a 220-nautical-mile Pacific Ocean passage aboard our Nautitech 40 catamaran, Loulou. We had been watching the weather and talking with other cruising yachts, but every boat has different capabilities. A monohull has different characteristics. A larger yacht can handle conditions differently. And Loulou has her own limits. The forecast wasn’t perfect. But it was better. So we made the decision to go. As we left the protection of the atoll, the Pacific slowly revealed its true size. The horizon opened up and enormous 3–4 metre swells began rolling beneath us. The wind was actually in a better direction than during our previous passage, but the ocean was BIG. Really big. And somewhere in the middle of those enormous Pacific swells, something happens that is difficult to explain unless you’ve experienced offshore sailing. You realise just how small you are. You can study weather. You can know your boat. You can prepare. You can plan. You can make good decisions. But you don’t control the ocean. You don’t control the wind. You don’t control the swell. You simply make the best decision you can with the information you have at that moment. And then… you live with the consequences. During the night, while one of us slept and the other stood watch, Loulou climbed enormous swells, tipped over the tops and slid down into the troughs again and again. What initially felt intimidating eventually became a strange kind of rhythm. And somewhere between the darkness of the night watch and the sunrise over the Pacific, we started thinking about what this cruising life is really about. It isn’t just the destinations. It’s the people. The sailors who share information. The locals who point you towards a better anchorage. The friendships formed in remote places. The people who quietly help you when conditions get difficult. And perhaps that’s why the sailing community becomes so close. Because when you’re hundreds of miles from land, trust matters. This passage from the Tuamotus back towards Tahiti, French Polynesia, became much more than simply another ocean crossing. It became a reminder that the ocean doesn’t care about our plans. It doesn’t care that friends are waiting. It doesn’t care how experienced we are. And strangely… that’s one of the things we love about sailing. You make your plan. You check the weather. You study the charts. You listen to people who know the area. You choose your moment. And then… you go.
