She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main ‘action’ cameras are an Insta Ace pro 2 and a DJI Action 4 while the ‘big camera is a Canon R50. All use Dji mini wireless mics or a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Back up is a Canon 200d. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. I also have two drones, a Magic mini2 and Mavic pro Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over several days. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea:I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. We traveled with Ohana and skipper Tor Hough for the annual Edison Yacht Club Regatta last week and saw first-hand the magnificence of the Bill Lee-designed sled. The journey was spectacular, but no more than actually chatting with the man himself, Mr. Santa Cruz, Bill Lee, the 84-year-old boat designer genius. It was a treat to chat with him, but the most surprising part of the show might be with Ohana's navigator, who is not a veteran of the many lake battles nor a grizzled swaby with miles of course left behind her, no, we met a high school senior, Ana Kozak, who is the 17-year-old navigator of a major Corinthian sailing program and you won't believe how good she is as a member of the crew, but more importantly, how much respect she commands because of her talents. Today at the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town, we launched the 100th Balance catamaran. Her name is Takoda. She is a Balance 502, the fourth of her model to launch, and she marks 100 boats in the water since Balance began building in South Africa with the very first Balance 526. This video is the short story of how we got here. From the 526 that found the balance between blue water performance and comfortable life aboard, through the 482 and the 442, up to the 580 and our flagship 750, and into the all new 502 that carries 10 years of owner feedback in her design. Two more models are close behind. The Balance 464 is nearing the end of her production journey in Cape Town, and the first Balance 540 is well underway in St Francis Bay, with her launch set for early 2027. 100 boats is just a number. Behind it is a network of livelihoods and an ever growing community of owners. And through our new partnership with the World Cruising Club, our fleet goes further together from here. Two Princess F55s, side by side, both loaded with fuel, people and toys... there was only one sensible thing to do: race them! 🛥️💨 This time we’ve managed to get two F55s together for a proper head-to-head run at sea, with a separate camera boat along to capture the action. Both boats are running twin 900hp engines and tipping the scales at around 30 tonnes each, so this isn’t exactly your average drag race. After carefully getting the two boats apart — and avoiding what could have been a rather expensive coming-together — it’s time for the countdown and the first attempt. At times, it felt like even the Italian officials didn’t fully understand their own process! After days of trying to get the paperwork sorted, we then head to the beautiful island of Favignana for some much-needed time at anchor. But our problems aren’t over yet… An issue with one of our engines forces us into a marina, where we have to dock our catamaran using just one engine, something we’ve never done before!
