Understanding our impact is one of the first steps toward reducing it. 🌊 Plastic pollution and microplastics are a growing challenge for our oceans—and understanding how materials behave, degrade, and affect marine ecosystems is essential if companies want to make more informed choices. As part of an environmental transition training program for the Occitanie and Catalonia Chambers of Commerce, Windelo was invited to share its experience as a company already working to reduce the environmental impact of its products and practices. For our own teams, it was also an opportunity to keep learning alongside Plastic At Sea, a local laboratory specializing in the study of plastics and their behavior in marine environments. Their scientific approach offers a different perspective on a challenge that directly concerns the marine industry: understanding the long-term impact of the materials and products we put into the world—and using that knowledge to design better. At Windelo, this thinking is already reflected in choices such as basalt fiber, recycled PET foam, electric propulsion, and renewable energy production on board. The recycled PET foam used to build a Windelo 54 alone represents the equivalent of approximately 25,000 recycled plastic bottles. But environmental transition is never a finished process. It relies on science, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and a willingness to continuously question and improve the way we do things. The Island That Cooks With geo thermal heat: Living on a Live Volcano 🌋 Before reaching the smoke and steam of Simbo, we had a major mission: Gizo. After three and a half months of off-grid living, we finally hit "civilization" to restock and refuel. In this part of the world, that means hand-pouring fuel from barrels and hoping the manual measurements are accurate! With the tanks full, we set sail for Simbo Island, arriving in the middle of the "New Year Games." This isn't your average holiday; it’s a week-long Olympic-style gauntlet. From high-speed canoe racing and spearfishing to the surprisingly competitive coconut-scraping trials, the energy of the village was electric. We even had the honor of being judges for the "Kings and Queens" competition, where the local youth share their visions for protecting the environment and their elders. But Simbo’s true power lies beneath the surface. Led by our guide, Stevenson, we paddled into the eerie, sulfur-scented Green Lake, where the water temperature rises as you approach the shore. Here, the island's geothermal vents act as a never-ending natural oven. We joined the locals to bake potatoes directly in the earth's vents and learned about the Megapode birds—prehistoric creatures that rely on volcanic heat to incubate their eggs in the sand. We finish by trekking to the summit of the crater to look down on the history of eruptions and tsunamis that have shaped this incredible, fire-breathing island. The 2026 Fireball World Championship, hosted by the Royal Torbay Yacht Club, saw 85 boats competing with sailors from 14 nations represented. What are the mysterious White Ladies of Anglesey, and why were they built? In this episode of Sailing Melody, I set sail from Beaumaris and head north through Puffin Sound, past Penmon Lighthouse and around the north coast of Anglesey on a voyage to investigate three unusual white navigation towers known as the White Ladies. The plan was simple: sail past Middle Mouse and West Mouse, get some good footage, and find out more about these remarkable nineteenth-century navigation marks. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas. Visibility was terrible for almost the entire passage. Passing through Puffin Sound was an eerie experience, with Penmon Lighthouse barely visible to port and the navigation marks appearing and disappearing into the haze. By the time I reached Middle Mouse, I could hardly see it at all. Even West Mouse and the White Ladies remained frustratingly elusive. So, rather than give up, I came back another day—this time by campervan, with my drone—to explore the coast around Carmel Head, find the White Ladies, and discover how these remarkable structures helped sailors navigate some of the most dangerous waters around the coast of Anglesey long before GPS and modern electronic navigation. Using a Bow Spring Line to get a Sailboat off a T-Head To do this maneuver, place a spring line on a forward dockside cleat and run it aft to the dock. Use a fender to protect the bow against the dock. Turn the wheel into the dock and apply forward thrust. The aft of the boat will turn out. Once the angle is clear of other boats, engage reverse. It was made by a company called Centaflex and we found the correct spares by referencing the number found on the coupling. It was a straightforward DIY job... There's something about sailing singlehanded, I can't say I really like it, but some aspects are good, I certainly wouldn't be up for a single handed around the world race like the GGR or even a cruising circumnavigation like our friend Barry has done. It's not that anything becomes that much more difficult, and it's not really about being lonely I don't think, although if it went on for years that might be the case. There's just something comforting about having another person there, they don't necessarily need to be a sailor, just a person with you means you're completely chilled sailing offshore in a way that's somehow difficult to find on your own. It is nice to test yourself sometimes though and you do feel at one with the boat, so do give it a try if you haven't already.
