We extend our sincere thanks to the George Hansen Estate for their generous support. Thanks to their funding, students and teachers from Kamo High School and Okaihau College were able to embark on an unforgettable sailing voyage. Kamo High School journeyed from Port Nikau in Whangārei Harbour to Ōpua, while Okaihau College explored the stunning Bay of Islands. Along the way, students experienced life aboard a sailing vessel, learned the ropes (literally!), and connected with Aotearoa’s rich maritime heritage. This hands-on experience fostered teamwork, confidence, and resilience — and for many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to engage with the marine environment and discover something new about themselves. #YouthDevelopment #SailingExperience #MaritimeHeritage #BayOfIslands #ThanksToGeorgeHansenEstate #Okaihaucollege #Kamohighschool

We extend our sincere thanks to the Auckland Maritime Foundation for their generous support. With their funding, we were able to deliver an unforgettable sailing experience to 22 students and 2 teachers from Māngere College, exploring the stunning Hauraki Gulf. Over the course of the voyage, students experienced life aboard a sailing vessel, learned the ropes (literally!), explored local islands, connected with Aotearoa’s rich maritime heritage, and developed greater confidence, teamwork, and resilience. For many, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover the marine environment up close — and discover something new about themselves too. #YouthDevelopment #AucklandMaritimeFoundation #NZSailingTrust #MangereCollege #HaurakiGulfAdventure
We extend our sincere thanks to the George Hansen Estate for their generious funding. Through their support, we were able to reach out to six schools across the Northland region. A total of 142 Northlanders had the opportunity to sail with us, they gained firsthand experience of life aboard a sailing vessel, explored local islands, connected with their heritage, and developed a deeper understanding of marine conservation. Throughout these journeys, students thrived and fully engaged in various activities, including dawn swims, beach cleanups, and multiple dolphin encounters. The trips sailed around the stunning Bay of Islands, with every group visiting Percy Island. Students explored the caves of Urapukapuka Island, collaborated with Project Island Song on weed management, cleaned remote beaches, hiked the Moturua Island track, and witnessed the beauty of dolphins and whales. We are deeply grateful for the support we’ve received and excited about the opportunity to continue empowering young people in Northland through these transformative sailing experiences.
🌊 This World Ocean Day – June 8th – take a moment to connect. Dip your toes in, feel the salt spray, or simply pause and appreciate the power and beauty of the ocean. Let’s celebrate and protect the big blue that connects us all. 💙 #WorldOceanDay #LoveTheOcean #NZSailingTrust

Mark Orams was interviewed by the Breakfast Show on TVNZ on 3rd October 2024 about the auction of all 6 shirts from the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race. 📌 https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/antiques-collectables/new-zealand-maori/listing/4945074195?bof=OBt1nyj9 This is a rare and unique opportunity to own a piece of sailing history. For the first time ever, a full collection of the six Whitbread leg-winner shirts from the 1989/90 race is up for grabs! Mark “The Sailing Professor” Orams, who sailed aboard Steinlager 2, has made these historic “leg winners” shirts from his personal collection available for sale. These shirts were awarded to the team for each leg of the 1989 Whitbread, and there were only 15 ever made. This set of 6 is likely the only one still together! It’s unlikely we’ll ever see another boat dominate like Steinlager 2 did, winning all six legs of the race. Proceeds from this sale will directly support the NZ Sailing Trust, helping us provide incredible voyaging experiences aboard iconic vessels like Steinlager 2 and Lion New Zealand. These experiences not only connect us to our sailing roots and Sir Peter Blake’s legacy but also give young people and adults life-changing opportunities. 🌊⛵
January 2023 - all female sail trip in the Hauraki Gulf
Every year, Scouts from all over the country are chosen to participate in the ATL@S trip organised by Scouts Aotearoa, which is nothing short of a life-changing experience. During this week-long journey, participants learn the importance of teamwork, communication, and self-development while sailing aboard New Zealand's most iconic yachts - Steinlager 2 or Lion New Zealand. The year 2024 saw an exceptional group of Scouts who embraced the challenges and came out with a magical week of self-discovery and new-found friendships.
It’s such a pleasure to have been a part of this journey with our young people. This opportunity was made possible through the support of New Zealand Blue Light, Northland Police, Whangarei Police Station, Grassroots Trust and the Oxford Sports Trust.
We recently took a group of girls from Whangarei High School on an overnight trip, which was made possible with the generous support of the the George Hansen Estate. The trip provided numerous opportunities for learning and some unforgettable first-time experiences. The students were an incredible bunch and made the trip truly memorable.
Lion New Zealand spent the day with Colin and Parlay Revival, having a wee race and leisurely Hauraki island lunch in glorious weather.
