More information about SeaNet Superyacht co-ownership solutions: https://seanet.eu/ Throughout this SeaNet SuperYachts series, we’ve followed the journey behind a brand-new 53-metre custom superyacht. In this third episode, David Seal sits down once again with SeaNet founder Matty Zadnikar to look at what happened long before delivery and the extraordinary amount of work that went into taking this project from an owner’s initial ideas to a completed yacht. The entire process took 44 months, but as Matty explains, those 44 months weren’t simply construction time. Around eight months were spent before the contract was even signed, defining exactly what the owner wanted, developing detailed specifications, benchmarking shipyards and negotiating the contract. The starting point wasn’t the shipyard or even the exterior design. It was the owner and how he intended to use the yacht. Moving from a 35-metre production yacht to a fully custom 53-metre project meant starting with a blank sheet of paper and understanding everything from cruising plans and entertainment to wellness, cuisine and everyday life on board. The captain, engineers, chief stewardess and even the chef were involved in developing the specification. In this video: • What happens before a custom yacht build even begins • Why the 53m project took 44 months from start to finish • How the owner’s requirements became a detailed specification • Why SeaNet approached and benchmarked several shipyards • Why the crew were involved before construction started • How detailed specifications helped control costs and changes • The specialists involved throughout a full-custom build • Why the cheapest shipyard isn’t necessarily the right choice • How the project finished within 0.05% of its initial budget • What happens during final acceptance and delivery • Why taking delivery of the yacht is not quite the end of the process One of the most interesting parts of the conversation is how much preparation went into controlling the budget. Matty explains that the more detailed the specification is before signing, the less room there is for unexpected changes during construction. In this case, the final deviation from the initial budget was just 0.05%, largely due to the owner later choosing to upgrade to metallic paint. David and Matty also discuss the construction itself and SeaNet’s approach to project management. Specialist surveyors were brought in for different areas, including welding, paint, construction and the yacht’s highly specified interior. Rather than trying to keep every discipline in-house, SeaNet coordinated the different specialists while maintaining oversight of the project and its finances. Then comes the moment everyone has been working towards: delivery. Matty explains why he won’t accept a yacht unless the technical list is virtually at zero, why certain cosmetic items can sometimes wait, and why taking ownership doesn’t mean the owner can immediately step aboard and start cruising. Tenders, equipment and owner supplies still need to be loaded, while the yacht has to be prepared, registered and transferred before the first guests arrive. The finished yacht itself remains deliberately under wraps for now. David and Matty explain that the intention is to build anticipation before revealing the completed 53-metre yacht in full, including an interior that Matty describes as among the highest-specification interiors he has personally seen. From the first conversations with the owner to final acceptance, this third chapter of the SeaNet series shows just how much happens behind the scenes of a fully custom superyacht build and why some of the most important decisions are made before construction even starts. While sailing to Indonesia we hit a log at 8kts that damages our dagger board then get entangled in a fishing net. We encounter strange wooden towers in the middle of the sea. What a disaster...I wanted too much. Instead of concentrating on one stringer at a time I wanted to tab the entire forward area underneath the galley to glass to the hull at the same time. The temperature was way too high in order to be quick enough to do so. Solution: sanding. What joy. A few days later when the temperature was in limits I did as I should from the beginning: one stringer at a time. The result: perfect. The series follows me, a woman in her mid-40s, as I try to understand what I’m looking for, explore very different historic boats and eventually find Anna Maria, a 21-metre Dutch tjalk built in 1913. After buying her, I have to learn how to handle this massive old canal boat and bring her through the narrow waterways, bridges and locks of the Netherlands to Germany. Anna Maria was converted into a liveaboard barge in the 1970s, and I originally believed I could keep much of her existing interior. But as more and more problems reveal themselves, that plan begins to unravel and I make the slightly terrifying decision to tear everything apart and take on an enormous DIY boat refit. 9 days. And today Showgirl had her exam. I’ve spent months thinking about this inspection. Every modification, every piece of safety equipment, every stupid little detail that had me wondering, “Is this actually according to the rules?” Today there was nowhere left to hide. 😂 They came onboard, went through the list, checked the boat, checked the equipment, checked things I’ve probably checked myself 700 times by now... And long story short: WE PASSED. ✅ I don't think I realised how much space this inspection was taking up in my head until it was over. There are still things to finish, because apparently my to-do list intends to follow me right up until September 6. But this was a big one. Showgirl has officially been given the thumbs up. After a couple months to ourselves we're back! Everyone is okay, no NDA's signed, just a bit of time to recoup after a tough couple years and to prepare ourselves and our sailing home for our biggest adventure yet! In this episode SV Liger takes to the seas again. Launching a boat is always a big task, but being in an experienced shipyard like Peake Yacht Services makes it easier. It was an incredibly busy but emotional day, as it marks the last time our catamaran will ever visit the shores of Trinidad. Welcome back on board! 🌊⛵️ In our last episode, we explored Fakarava and were absolutely blown away by its underwater world and the famous Wall of Sharks. 🦈🤿 This time, we’re taking you along for three weeks of family time — of course, together with our buddy boats. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦⛵️⛵️ We sail to Toau, a small and still relatively untouched atoll. 🏝️ We encounter manta rays once again, right in front of the pass. 🪽🌊 After navigating a passage, we discover an open window and have to clean the entire port side of the boat. 🪟🧽😂 We continue on to Apataki for one night, hoping to go snorkeling — but after hearing about tiger sharks in the area, we decide to skip it. 🦈😳 From there, we set sail overnight to Rangiroa. 🌙⛵️ We enjoy some cold drinks at the famous Tiputa Pass while watching dolphins jumping through the water. 🍹🐬☀️ We go diving once again and explore the incredible underwater world. 🤿 Then we sit tight and wait for a little more wind before, after a lot of back and forth, finally deciding to head towards Tahiti. 💨⛵️🇵🇫 And we experience our very first man-overboard situation with Samuel — thankfully, in a safe environment where everything turned out well. 😱🛟❤️ Follow along, leave us a like 👍, and enjoy our family world journey with us as we explore this beautiful world together! 🌎❤️⛵️
