7 days until I sail alone around the world. 😳 And today we tackled one of the BIG jobs… food. Eight months at sea means a ridiculous amount of it has to somehow fit inside Showgirl. I’ve got some of my favourite gluten-free options from Schär, Food Tactics for those days when cooking is absolutely not happening and I just need something quick and nutritious, and of course my protein powder from Glucose Goddess. Food Force also sent me food, including some non-gluten-free options. Those obviously can’t stay with me, so hopefully some of the other GGR participants will happily give them a home. 😂 And because eight months is a very long time to wonder “Wait… do I still have any of those left?”, everything is going into an Excel sheet so I can keep track of exactly what I have onboard. Barbate is where the boats the orcas have attacked end up. We left Gibraltar at sunrise and sailed straight past it. This is the stretch of coast every sailor going to the Atlantic has to cross, and there is no answer to it. The advice is to hug the shore in about five metres of water, so we did — hand on the wheel the whole way, because if an orca hits a boat with the autopilot engaged it destroys the autopilot too. Flat sea, clear sky, the kind of day you should be sailing for pleasure, and instead we spent it watching the water for fins. Before any of that could happen the wind instrument had to be fixed. It was reading five knots in thirty, the only chandlery in Gibraltar sells almost nothing, and there is no crane in the yard to get anyone up the mast. So the Furuno sensor went on the stern arch two metres off the deck, which meant cutting into the cable — a thing I have had to do once before and was hoping to avoid twice. Then Cape Trafalgar, where the fishing nets run all the way to the beach and push you out into exactly the deep water you have been avoiding all day. A regatta none of the competitors seemed able to navigate. A week anchored off Rota with a dead watermaker and no showers. And, at the end of it, another sailboat leaving harbour a few minutes ahead of us and unknowingly doing us an enormous favour. Next week we cross into Portugal. We've been sailing full-time on our Leopard catamaran for more than 6 years but to us, this lifestyle has always been about more than just sunsets and rainbows. We wanted to make a difference and help support the communities that we visit as we sail around the world and here in Fiji, we've partnered up with Sea Mercy Fiji to do exactly that. When islands get hit by cyclones, Sea Mercy Fiji are first on the scene to support the villages that have been impacted, but during the rest of the year, they send medical supplies to the most remote hospitals in the Lau group - the most remote islands in the country. This week, we are loading up Indioko in Savusavu with medical equipment and supplies for the hospital in Lakeba, 100 miles away. It's a bit of a beat through some rough seas to reach the island but we love being able to use our boat for something more than just our adventure, and we'll take you round the hospital to share the experience with you when we arrive. Wanna get down and dirty; maybe get lucky? Well, that’s what Karen asked Steve as she tried to get him to take a break from working in the owner's cabin. The reverse cycle unit there has often needed a slight boost provided by a gentle breeze from a Ryobi battery operated fan directed at the thermostat to keep the unit running efficiently cool and cycling properly. Steve installed a Caframo Bora fan strategically aimed which solved the issue. Surprise, surprise, surprise! We now have a second chartplotter. The Garmin 8610xsv will be an awesome addition to the existing Garmin 1242xsv in the cockpit. It has a 10 inch touch screen and the latest U.S. South - Lakes, Rivers and Coastal Marine Charts. It was a huge undertaking to route all the required cables through the salon ceiling, into the engine room where they would be accessible in both the den/navigation area and cockpit. Whew, glad that activity is over and that once connected everything worked. Next, final installation in the cockpit and enjoyment of looking at two chartplotters. (Constructions Nautiques du Sud-Ouest). Isabella is a sailing ketch and is considered a 1990/2010 model. It has four private cabins, an engine room, salon, galley, and three heads with two separate shower stalls. The hull is fiberglass and is considered a bluewater cruiser. Isabella has an excellent capsize ratio of 1.68 and a very good comfort ratio of 42.19. She is equipped with Garmin / Raymarine electronics and has hydraulic steering. The naval architect was Michel Bigoin who also designed the largest sailboat in the world which was manufactured in 1976 and called Phocea. It was a 246 foot four masted steel schooner and was considered the largest private sailing yacht in the world until 2004. **On a boat like this, even installing a LIGHT SWITCH can turn into an all-day project. 😂** After four weeks of working on the boat, we’ve learned a few things — including some lessons about painting that we definitely wish we’d learned sooner! I’ve been spending most of my time outside in the blazing summer sun working on the cabin top. After sanding down the gelcoat and filling the low spots in previous episodes, we’ve spent the last few weeks experimenting with rolling on our Alexseal topcoat. The good news? **It can be done!** The bad news? We discovered the hard way that every bit of fairing compound needs to be properly covered with primer before the topcoat goes on. Otherwise… well, let’s just say there’s more sanding in my future. 😬 Meanwhile, Matt has been working on getting the cockpit ready for paint while jumping back and forth to the boat’s electrical systems. And that’s where another surprisingly complicated project came up: mounting all of the light switches. Our previous aluminum boat made this job easy. This fiberglass catamaran? Not even close. Each switch location requires custom plugs, drilling, de-coring the foam, removing paint, glassing the plug into place, and eventually fairing and painting everything so the finished installation looks like it was always meant to be there. It's a lot of work for something you normally don't even think twice about! Direction Rangiroa, en Polynésie française, où notre entrée dans l’atoll ne se déroule vraiment pas comme prévu... En pleine passe, impossible de tourner la barre à roue! Nous devons entrer jusqu’au mouillage uniquement à l’aide des boutons du pilote automatique. Une fois en sécurité, on se lance dans une longue recherche pour trouver la cause du problème et réparer le système avant de poursuivre notre traversée. Comme si ce n’était pas assez, on manque aussi de perdre notre radeau de survie et notre canne à pêche… après avoir réussi à remonter un énorme thon qui a complètement arraché son support! Heureusement, cette journée mouvementée se termine sur une belle victoire. Et pour nous récompenser, on part découvrir l’une des plongées les plus réputées au monde : la passe de Rangiroa, avec ses requins, ses raies et ses dauphins! Une chose est certaine : on apprend tranquillement à connaître ce catamaran, ses systèmes… et surtout ses petits caprices!
