Day 18 of our Atlantic crossing, and it finally feels like the dream we’ve been sailing toward. Warm air, calm seas, a perfect sunrise, and that deep sense that land is getting closer. Morning coffee, miso soup, and a rare moment of stillness after days of motion. We juggle fuel management, let the engine rest, and soak in the peace of sailing under main alone. As the sun sets, we throw out a fishing line, play with the dogs, and wind down with lentils, fresh avocados, and surprisingly good produce for nearly three weeks at sea. The cockpit turns into a floating movie theater with a projector, popcorn, and a little Christmas spirit creeping in early. We read poems, attempt riddles, laugh at ourselves, and reflect on what it means to spend Christmas mid-Atlantic. And then—finally—the Leeward Islands appear on the chart. Two more days. From corrosion pits and rudder repairs to future cockpit projects and watermaker fittings, this welder is about to earn its keep. Servicing a marine diesel engine is an essential part of boat maintenance, especially when you’re living aboard and preparing for long motoring days ahead. We’re currently liveaboard on our sailboat in Malaysia, tackling DIY sailboat maintenance while cruising Southeast Asia. From chasing down hard-to-find engine parts to performing a diesel engine service, this episode shows what real sailboat engine maintenance abroad looks like — tight spaces, oily hands, and all.
