Day 2. Adrenaline. And Determination. There is something extraordinary and spectacular about watching a fleet of superyachts navigate the narrow channels of La Maddalena: towering masts crossing paths, hulls grazing past each other, crews working in focus as the wind funneling through the Strait pressures the sails for the final upwind leg. 33 miles of pure competition. Of focus, of tactics. Two days done. One still to live.

After an unforgettable three weeks exploring the vibrant city of Makassar in Sulawesi, we finally cast off for Kalimantan, Borneo and one of the roughest night passages of our cruising life. What should have been a straightforward sail across the Makassar Strait quickly turned into a struggle against strong currents and rough seas that made for an exhausting and uncomfortable overnight passage aboard SV Our Dreamtime. Join us as we and finally find shelter in a remote reef anchorage deep in the Makassar Strait. This episode captures the reality of cruising, from challenging night sailing and passage making to the relief of reaching a safe anchorage after a very unpleasant passage. Sea Trial Day 2 aboard the all-new Sabre 38 with Volvo Penta DPI propulsion. With all systems confirmed from Day 1, this is where we begin gathering the real performance data. Throughout the day, the team records RPM, trim angle, speed, fuel burn, and handling characteristics across a range of operating conditions to help determine optimal cruising performance and top-end speed. Beyond the official numbers, we also conduct additional in-house testing including sound readings, joystick maneuverability, and hardover turns to better understand how the Sabre 38 performs in real-world conditions. Sea trials like these are an important part of refining the overall experience before delivery and ensuring the boat performs the way a Sabre should. Sea Trial Day 1 for the all-new Sabre 38 with Volvo Penta DPI propulsion begins in Raymond, Maine. Before we can gather real-world performance data, the boat first needs to be transported from the factory to the marina and put through a full systems check on the water. This stage is all about validation. Testing the new Volvo Penta DPI system, confirming prop selection, checking engine data, and making sure every system onboard is operating exactly as intended. These first runs give the team a chance to make adjustments before official performance testing begins. Once everything is confirmed and running properly, we can move into Day 2 and begin collecting the true performance numbers for the new Sabre 38. In this short clip you can see how we like to change jibs as we go through a tack. By doing a jib change in this way, it makes it easier on the bow team to both raise the new jib and lower the old jib in an organized way. If you can plan ahead so that your jib change can be done through a tack, it saves a lot of hassle.
This is a great entry level boat! The Mercruiser 4.3 TKS is a great power plant and has been recently serviced and has a new impeller. 190Hp at the prop and 405 hours. Snap out carpets are a great option and easy to keep clean. There is cockpit and bow covers but no bimini top for the wakeboard tower. There is a Kenwood CD stereo (no Bluetooth, but easy to add). The interior is in good shape and clean. The captains chair is bolstered and the wheel is a tilt steering wheel. Comes on the single axle trailer with brakes and swing tongue. Summerized and ready to go! Drop by @shuswapmarina today to check it out! This is a consignment sale, no trades, thanks! Check out our friends at www.sascu.ca for financing options!
Day 10. Pretty darn good day today. The wind finally came back, which immediately made me feel like a sailor again instead of just floating around out here waiting. The boat is moving properly, we’re making progress, and everything just feels better when the sails are full. One thing that keeps making me realize how lucky I am is the amazing chat following along. It’s honestly ridiculous. Sometimes I’ll go to sleep and if I slowly drift too far off course, someone will message me saying, “hey… maybe turn back a little.” Like… who even has a support system like that? I’m definitely getting spoiled by it, and I think I’ll need some kind of rehab before the GGR because obviously that won’t be possible there. But for now, I’m just incredibly grateful for it. And another big thing… I’m officially entering the Bay of Biscay. Which feels crazy. I’m so close now I can almost smell France. Actually, no. I can’t smell anything. Still just smells like boat. But mentally… I’m there. 🌊 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology.

We’ve been slogging away for 8 months on the catamaran build, but this week we’re kicking off the dirty boat yard clothes to scrub up for the 2026 Sanctuary Cove Boat show! The biggest boat show in Australia has plenty to offer, we’ve spent three days exploring as much as we can. Let us take you through sail catamarans and monohulls, explore the trade stalls and introduce some of the companies who are helping us make vital systems on this build possible. We have a limited knowledge on multihulls, so our mate Jai Tooley jumps onboard for a day to share his passion with us as we explore new entries to the charter market, crowd favorite performance cruisers and the high end performance sail cats. We miss some of the big parties at the boat show but make up for it with our favorite comfort activity - BIN DIVING! This episode is an extended cut as we seek inspiration for our 57ft Catamaran build and enjoy some much needed fun loving quality time together. _____________________________________________________________________________ PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/TheNewKidsOnTheDock PAYPAL: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=KNLJDGDXPAYAU WISHLIST: https://www.myregistry.com/wishlist/josh-and-phoebe-coomera-queensland/5046646 _____________________________________________________________________________ We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and seas which we work, play and live on: the Kombumerri peoples. This is part 7 and the final episode in the series of a step-by-step build of a B&B Yacht Designs Spindrift 10 nesting dinghy, following the guidance from the build instructions. This video focuses on how I made my own sail, building the 3-section mast so that it fits tightly with it's counterpart(s), attaching the sail track and taking it out for a test-sail! I purchased the pre-cut "kit" to save some time, but the same results can be accomplished by purchasing the build instructions and cutting your own marine-grade plywood. This video is for those who are looking to build their own dinghy, and who wish to learn more about the process. This is the second project Brent and I worked on together, the previous being a 7' pram for Brent. I hope you enjoy, and I hope you take away some successes we had, as well as learning from some of the failures we encountered.

After years of delays, setbacks, and finally taking delivery of my new Island Spirit 525e… I’ve run into another problem. Because of Thailand’s import and customs rules, I now have to sail the boat roughly 72 hours to Malaysia, clear customs, and then sail all the way back to Thailand just so the yacht can legally return as a tourist vessel. It’s expensive, time consuming, exhausting… and honestly pretty frustrating after everything it took to finally get this boat in the water. In this episode of the Sailing Doodles Podcast, I break down: Why I have to leave Thailand The confusing customs/import situation My planned route to Malaysia The risks of an offshore passage this soon Costs, timing, and logistics What this means for the future of the boat Owning a yacht overseas definitely isn’t always as glamorous as it looks online. Living remotely aboard our sailboat in Alaska means finding creative ways to build, repair, and repurpose what the coast gives back. In this episode, we explore an old wilderness ship graveyard and salvage weathered hardwood from a forgotten shipwreck to use inside the Gypsy. What looks like driftwood and debris at first glance turns out to be beautiful old-growth lumber filled with history, character, and saltwater stories. Everyone talks about catamaran comfort, stability, and space… but almost nobody talks about the hidden advantage monohulls have for beginner sailors. In this video, I break down the one thing that completely changed how I view the catamaran vs monohull debate, and why I’m personally planning to buy a monohull in 2027 instead of a catamaran. This isn’t about “real sailors” or tradition. It’s about how boats teach you, how beginners actually learn, and why feedback at sea might matter more than comfort when you’re starting out. If you’ve been debating catamaran vs monohull, especially as a beginner cruiser, this perspective might completely change how you think about the decision. ⚓ Topics Covered: • Catamaran vs monohull for beginners • Why monohulls feel different underway • Heel feedback and seamanship • Self-righting design explained simply • The psychology behind boat choice • Why comfort isn’t always the most important thing #Sailing #Monohull #Catamaran #Liveaboard #Sailboat #Cruising #BeginnerSailing #BoatLife
