This video breaks down the two most common rope types used with windlasses and exactly when to use each one. What this video covers: - Why three strand nylon is the most commonly used windlass rope and what makes its stretch characteristics an advantage - Why three strand rope holds its diameter under load, which keeps the chain wheel able to bite consistently - What plaited rope is, how it flakes cleanly into an anchor locker, and why it is the better choice for small vessels - The critical disadvantage of plaited rope on larger boats: excessive weight forward causes the rope to elongate, shrink in diameter, and lose its grip on the chain wheel - How anchor weight, chain length, and rope type interact — and why heavy anchors with long chain runs demand three strand rope The wrong rope does not fail dramatically. It simply stops working when you need it most. Understanding the difference between these two rope types before you buy is one of the most practical decisions you can make for your anchoring system.

Episode 262 In this episode, we continue our passage from Yamba to Southport. We planned to anchor overnight in Byron Bay, but a three‑metre swell made it far too dangerous. After a quick tea stop, we pushed on and sailed through the night in strong winds and lively seas. Arriving at Southport before dawn, we hove‑to offshore and waited for first light to cross the bar — a wet, windy, and pretty hairy entrance. Once inside, we explored Southport by bike and visited a sailmaker to get our oversized sails properly altered. Join us for a mix of challenges, coastal beauty, and classic cruising life. Epic Navigator Man Overboard Priority: Never Lose Visual Contact | Catamaran Emergency Training A man overboard situation is not a theoretical drill. It is a time-critical emergency where the outcome is decided in the first seconds. In this video, filmed during a live Epic Navigator Masterclass in Greece, we break down the most important principle that overrides all others: Do not lose visual contact with the person in the water. Before the radio call. Before the electronics. Before any recovery maneuver. If you lose sight of the casualty, the situation escalates immediately from controlled recovery to search and rescue. This training scenario demonstrates: Real-time crew reaction under pressure Role allocation and command structure onboard a catamaran Why visual tracking is the primary survival factor How secondary actions (MOB button, Mayday call) fit into the sequence Practical execution of recovery while maintaining constant contact This is not about perfect maneuvers. It is about maintaining control of the situation. At Epic Navigator, we train crews to operate, decide, and respond under real conditions — not just sail. Because a family charter can turn into a critical incident within seconds, and the difference is not experience, but preparation. Our methodology focuses on: Immediate situational awareness Clear command responsibility Simple, repeatable emergency procedures Execution under stress This is how you convert a potential tragedy into a controlled recovery. It's time to switch out our propellers and this is an upgrade we have been longing to make for a few years now. We've been dragging our old fixed props behind our boat for more than 25,000 nautical miles and they cause some serious drag, slowing us down and making our passages way less efficient. We knew we wanted to move away from fixed props, but there are always drawbacks to the alternative offerings of folding or feathering propellers so when we found these GORI props, they ticked all the boxes for us. We will still retain maximum power when motoring in forward AND reverse, but we'll also have the benefits of maximum efficiency when we're sailing and the props fold away, with decreased drag and potential to catch on loose lines or items in the water. We'll test them for real when we get back in the water and start sailing again, but we're super excited to finally make this change. First off, we need to figure out how to remove our old props and while we're at it we're going to change our cutlass bearings too - and that's a whole story in itself. Check out our newest upgrade as part of this refit series. Massive thanks to GORI for supporting our adventure. Bottom line: No, the 'Luperon Muck' is pure, slick mud that allows anchors to plow. Unless you have a massive oversized anchor and constant watch, a mooring is a much safer bet. We’ve seen multiple boats hit each other this week because they didn't hold. "What should I do if a nearby boat starts dragging toward me?" Bottom line: Start your engine immediately and be ready to maneuver. Don’t rely on the other boat’s anchor eventually grabbing. Use your fenders, have your boat hook ready, and if you can, alert the harbor on VHF. . Howdy folks! Welcome back to Nomad Boat Building. In Episode 2 of the Poulsbo Boat Project, I spend the week preparing materials and fabricating a few laminated bits. This stage of boatbuilding may not be the most glamorous, but it’s one of the most important. A huge portion of the time is spent sorting lumber, milling stock to thickness, and preparing parts before assembly can even begin. In this episode you’ll see: • Processing lumber and selecting materials for the build • Milling boards to thickness and preparing stock • Ripping western red cedar strips for strip-built planking • Laminating the stem and transom knee • Fixing springback in a laminated stem • Laminating a cutwater (outer stem) • Tips for clamps, laminations, and shop workflow The Poulsbo Boat will be strip-built with western red cedar planking, which allows for a lightweight and stable hull once fiberglassed. I also explain why I’m skipping the traditional bead-and-cove process for these planks and how I plan to align them during installation. Boatbuilding is often about problem solving, and when the laminated stem sprung back more than expected, I show how to correct it and bring it back to the proper lines. If you enjoy woodworking, traditional craftsmanship, wooden boats, or boatbuilding techniques, this series follows the entire build from lofting to launch. 👍 If you enjoy the videos, please like, subscribe, and consider supporting the channel. Hoy he vivido una jornada diferente. 20:53 Resumen y despedida.

Spring is here and thus so is spring cleaning. Isabella is covered in pollen causing Karen to begin to clean the boat. Steve, assisting with the hose and the prankster, squirts her while she’s scrubbing the deck. April showers bring May flowers, but that water was cold. As a gesture, Steve finished the boat cleaning. We raise the mizzen sail in dock. Using the trusty WinchRite makes it so much easier; every winch becomes an electric winch. A little dirty and still looking good plus when lowered into the MacPac (sail cover) the sail flaked (folded and stored) perfectly. Isabella has several separate bilge areas, one of which is located in the main cabin area and is hard to reach. Using the Ryobi jigsaw and a scroll blade Steve cut a hole in the floor to install a new access panel. It made reaching that bilge a lot easier. Since the panel is installed under a piece of carpet it isn’t even visible. The weather was wonderful this week and we spent some time on deck enjoying the warm spring breezes. Karen waited in vain for pelicans to fly by, maybe next time. We are so happy that the extended forecast shows mild days because, bad news, our Dometic reverse cycle unit isn’t worth repairing. The report from the authorized service dealer indicates the unit's reversing valve is stuck, the control panel needs to be replaced, the compressor is not predicted to last long, etc., etc., etc. Thus, a new unit will be ordered and it will take several days for it to arrive. We decided to buy the same Dometic 16,000 BTU unit due to the size constraints of the area where it will reside. Y’all you know we love to dance. This time we tried some synchronized steps. It’s a little difficult balancing on a boat so some dance moves are a little shakier than others. And yes, we need a bit more practice. Thank you so very much for joining us here. 🔨 We Can’t Agree On ANYTHING — But Watch What Happens Renovating our 1980s Florida home is no joke — and neither is renovating it together. In this episode, we tackle the main arches leading into the dining room… except we have two completely different visions for how they should look. Spoiler: only one of us wins that argument. 😅 Then just when we think we have a plan — she changes her mind on the kitchen, and now the office wall is coming back 2 feet to make room for the dream kitchen we always wanted. Because these windows sit close to the bow where waves can hit hard, we didn’t want to rely only on glue like most production boats. Instead, we designed a heavy-duty aluminum frame system that combines structural adhesive with a mechanical backup ring for extra safety. In this episode we machine the frames, explain the engineering behind the design, and show how our partners at Robland ( @Robland ) are helping us turn this idea into reality. We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons. The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life. We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams. After nearly two years without a mast, this is the moment everything finally starts to come back together—we step the mast AND reinstall the boom, and for the first time in quite awhile… it actually looks like a sailboat again. In this episode of our sailboat refit, we complete one of the biggest milestones of the entire project. We fully rebuilt our mast from bare aluminum—removing every piece of hardware, sanding off all the paint, rewiring everything, servicing blocks, upgrading clutches, and fabricating custom components including spreader ends, light mounts, and a welded masthead plate for our electronics. But getting here wasn’t easy. Our biggest setback came from sourcing new turnbuckles for the standing rigging. After importing them and waiting weeks for delivery, we discovered they were completely wrong—threads didn’t match, pins didn’t fit, and we had no choice but to cancel our crane day. After sending detailed measurements and specifications back to the manufacturer, we waited another two months for replacements. This time, everything fit. Ten weeks after cancelling our original appointment, the crane returned and we successfully stepped the mast without incident. Then, just two days later—with the help of the yard—we were able to get the boom back on as well, bringing the rig back together faster than we expected. Now, with both the mast and boom installed, we’re rapidly working through the final tasks needed to get this boat back in the water. The momentum is real, and after a long refit journey, we’re finally closing in on launch. If you’re into sailboat refits, rigging, mast stepping, DIY boat restoration, and cruising sailboats, this episode captures both the technical work and the emotional milestone of putting the rig back together. We’re not done yet—but we’re closer than ever. ⛵ One step closer to sailing. 00:00 Feeling nervous 00:41 Channel intro 00:57 New turnbuckles 04:12 Diamonds 05:22 Step the mast 10:32 Reinstall the boom 11:26 Wrap up/Like and Subscribe 12:14 End Card #SailboatRefit #MastStepping #BoatRigging #DIYBoat #SailingLife #LiveaboardLife #BoatRestoration #CatamaranRefit
We woke up for the last time in one of the most beautiful anchorages we’ve found in the Anambas Islands… and set off toward our next destination. But getting there wasn’t straightforward. The route took us back out through a narrow reef pass and into an area scattered with small islands, shallow patches, and channels where the charts aren’t always completely reliable. With our deep-draft boat, it’s the kind of navigation that requires patience, caution, and a slow approach. With light winds, we motored carefully through, letting the kids take part — Tao at the helm and Nemo helping to navigate — before approaching our next anchorage. And then, as we rounded the corner… we saw something we didn’t expect. A waterfall, cascading straight down toward the sea. With our watermaker out of action for the past year, fresh water is something we don’t take for granted — so this quickly turned into a very welcome stop, complete with shampoo and conditioner. While part of the crew rested, the others went ashore and discovered a peaceful stilt village nearby. Later, we all explored together, walking up toward the waterfall and wandering through the village, taking in the slower pace of life. That evening, we ate at a small waterfront restaurant, where Nemo played with the local children — a simple moment that said everything about why we choose this life. ⛵ We are Sailing NV — a family of four living aboard an ex-Vendée Globe ocean racing yacht, sharing the reality of offshore sailing, family life, and exploring Southeast Asia by boat. ❤️ Support Our Journey If you'd like to help us keep sailing + filming, you can support us here: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SailingNV Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/sailingnv Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/sailingnv or if you'd like to help us buy something we need, you can check out our amazon wish list https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1G2NJ0EGJLKR0?ref_=wl_share Thank you so much #sailinglife #indonesia #familyadventure

What happened on this passage: 16 days, 2,048 nm: long, light-wind slog across the Southern Atlantic Parasailor workhorse: set it more times than we can count and even repaired it at sea Boat projects: knocked out a few repairs and upgrades while underway Finding the groove: settled into life at sea and the routines that keep everything running Highlights: calm, frustrating light-air sailing, sail changes, onboard repairs, and those quiet ocean moments that make passages memorable.
