We're in Hawaii. This one starts on boarding day for Norwegian's Pride of America — a ship that does something no other major cruise line currently offers, a year-round itinerary sailing entirely within the Hawaiian Islands. After months in the marina, it’s finally time to start getting SV Impavidus ready for sea again. In this episode we refit the sails, re-thread the running rigging, sort out the German mainsheet system and begin preparing the boat for life back under sail here in the Mediterranean. We also take a look at the new hatch sunshades we’ve had made locally in Tunisia — although getting them finished turned into a bit of a saga! Living aboard our 80’ steel schooner in remote Southeast Alaska means the work is never ordinary. In this episode, Scott paddles ashore from the Alaskan Gypsy to help remove dangerous trees looming above a seaside cabin in Port Protection on Prince of Wales Island. After storms and blowdowns damaged the property and nearly knocked the cabin off it's foundation, the goal was simple but not easy: get the hazard trees down before they came down on the cabin again, generator shed, or tent. With limited tools from the boat, old rigging line, a pulley, wedges, a ladder, and plenty of improvised problem-solving, this turned into one of the most technical and suspenseful tree-felling jobs we’ve filmed. Remote Alaska life is beautiful, but it comes with real work, real risk, and a lot of figuring things out as you go.

Episode 270 Drama at anchor and a 110-mile passage! Our stay in Airlie Beach started peacefully, but things took a turn when a neighboring catamaran dragged its anchor and crashed right into our bow, leaving us with some unexpected damage. Once the dust settled, we pulled up anchor and set sail for Gloucester Passage to do a little exploring—though, truth be told, there wasn't much to see! From there, it was time for a big push: a 110-mile passage to Townsville. We pulled an early morning departure and pushed through the night, dropping anchor just 10 miles short of our destination at midnight. The maneuver was executed in crosswind conditions, requiring proper control of boat speed, wind awareness, crew coordination, and correct use of engines throughout the approach. Dreimal versucht, siebenmal auseinander gebaut – so klappt es beim ersten Mal. Meine Lofrans Tigress war beim Winterlager-Check hinüber – gebrochene Bronzeklemmnuss, kaputte Achse. Im ersten Teil hab ich sie zerlegt, jetzt liegt alles gereinigt vor mir. Das Problem: es gibt im Internet schlicht keine Anleitung, wie man diese Winde wieder zusammenbaut. Wartungs-Tutorials findest du jede Menge, aber wie man sie korrekt montiert – nichts. Ich hab's dann eben rausgefunden, dreimal probiert, siebenmal demontiert, und beim siebten Versuch hat es endlich geklappt. Das Entscheidende ist die Reihenfolge: zuerst das Zahnrad komplett ins hintere Lager, dann erst den Motor mit dem Schneckenrad einfahren. Klingt simpel, wenn man's weiß. Herby builds the rest of the structure using laminated wood and epoxy to make the deck portion of the ring frame.
