We’ve crossed the Atlantic… but some of the most dangerous waters of our voyage now lie ahead. Leaving Cádiz, Spain, we sail into the Strait of Gibraltar — a passage feared by sailors for two reasons: orcas and traffic. In recent years, orcas have attacked countless boats along this stretch of coast — ramming hulls, snapping rudders, and even sinking yachts. To protect our boat, we hug the shoreline in shallow water… but that means dodging fishing nets, pods, and shoals that can rise without warning. And then comes the next trial: the Strait of Gibraltar itself. This narrow gateway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Giant tankers, cargo ships, and ferries all funnel through the same narrow channel, leaving little room for a small sailboat like ours. There are numerous issues with this rig which Herby will be correcting in the future to make this a true ocean cruiser and that all starts with getting rid of the mast! Herby uses the mast on Wisdom to drop the mast and get it out of the way so that work can progress and the boat can become readied for the new and improved rig. He then explains various methods to lower a mast, and tells you which are better than other methods and how you can choose which method is best for you based on your finances and situation. E Komo Mai, You will never believe this ... We still don't and we lived it. We did not see the the UFO's or the ghost orb at the time of filming. There were three of us there and we were all looking the same direction and no one heard or saw a thing. The first time the UFO fly's by the wave noise is slightly louder in the original footage. However, the 2nd time the UFO came by, it was closer to us based on the cloud as a backdrop and the waves were at their lowest decibel in the moment and there is no noise, no lights, and they were not visible with the naked eye. While I did not slow the orb down and freeze frame the footage like I did for the UFO's, it was very compelling to say the least. The third object is believed to be a bug that crosses over the "Pillbox Sunrise" picture. The UFO and orb is still a mystery to us. Let us know what you think in the comments! Brigitta was completely surprised, of course, even though sailing around the world fit much better into her professional life than mine. Over the next six months, however, Brigitta made an amazing transformation and is now just as excited about our big adventure as I am. We have now been traveling for a total of four and a half years. One adventure follows another, and we enjoy every day anew. In search of freedom and independence, a thirst for adventure, and a connection to nature, we – Brigitta and Hannes – are sailing around the world together. For this circumnavigation, we bought the Lagoon 40 MariaNoa catamaran, with which we set off on the Barfußroute from the French Atlantic coast at the beginning of March 2021. Howdy folks — Mark here from Nomad Boatbuilding. Wooden boatbuilders are often called craftsmen, artists, or engineers — but most days, I feel more like a problem solver. In this video, I tackle a tricky challenge: fiberglassing a glued-lapstrake wooden hull using WEST SYSTEM epoxy products. Lapstrake planking has deep ridges and overlaps that make traditional fiberglassing nearly impossible. My solution? Applying fiberglass tape to each plank individually and finishing it with peel ply (release fabric) to speed up the process and improve the finish. My supervisor is watching me. It turns me on and is hard to keep my manhood from responding. I love peeling tape off of a newly painted surface. Forever working on Isabella. It's satisfying but a little too much sometimes. Watching Karen polish the stainless steel is certainly fun for me and she enjoys how it shines afterwards. LED lights last a long time but also fail prematurely. Replacing with a WaveOne multi-color light certainly brightens up the salon. More maintenance. We're trying to trace down a very subtle leak. We know there is one because our accumulator is working properly and our water pump comes on to refill it even when a faucet is not being used. What is an accumulator? Fresh water systems on a boat include a holding tank, a water pump, and a device to reduce the amount of time the pump runs when using water. This is the job of an accumulator. Ours is a 2 gallon tank with a pressurized diaphragm. This enables the ability to turn on a faucet without the pump running every time. We certainly need a better storage system for pots and pans. Digging out our wok takes a bit of time but the stir fry we make with it is worth the effort. Thanks for subscribing! This week aboard our sailboat was all about progress — tackling a mix of big and small refit projects to keep our boat seaworthy and ready for adventure! 🔧 Project 1: We measured for new sheaves in the boom and mast, and for new turnbuckles and jaws for our standing rigging — important steps toward a smoother and safer rig. 📡 Project 2: We mapped out the path and measured the VHF cable run, crawling through deck lockers and under the nav desk to trace every inch. 💧 Project 3 (The Big One): A leaking valve repair turned into a major fiberglass project. Working in tight spaces, we cut out the old valve and glassed in a new fiberglass tube. Using a balloon to apply pressure kept epoxy under control — messy but effective! The leak is finally sealed, and the job’s done. 🚰 Project 4: We continued the PEX plumbing installation for the freshwater system into the galley — another step toward completing the refit. After a week of hard work, fiberglass dust, and plenty of crawling into tight spaces, it feels great to see real progress on the boat.
