In this video I explain why saloon window leaks on the Bavaria 37 Cruiser (Farr design) are not simply a sealing failure, but a predictable result of thermal expansion mismatch and constrained movement. Large smoke-grey acrylic windows absorb far more solar energy than the surrounding white GRP coachroof. Under normal day–night conditions this produces several millimetres of differential movement across a 2.3 m window span. Traditional mastic or polyurethane bonding systems are too rigid to accommodate this repeated shear and peel loading and will inevitably fatigue and fail. Drawing on façade engineering principles, I break down: • how thermal expansion and solar loading actually affect acrylic and GRP • why mastic-only bonding has a limited service life • how compliant bonding using 3M VHB structural tape accommodates movement • why a low-modulus silicone edge seal is better suited for weatherproofing • and how external solar shading can significantly reduce thermal stress This approach aligns the glazing detail with the real mechanical and thermal behaviour of the materials, resulting in a far more durable solution. In this episode Mark begins construction of a new wooden dinghy. It will be a downsized version that Herreshoff designed for Nereia. At 7 1/2 feet long, this pram will be just right for Eleutheros. We take a trip to Marks lumber yard (in the bow of Eleutheros) to dig out some white oak that Mark has been saving for this build. Other projects on the go include replacing the webbing that hold the sail slides on the main and mizzen, with stainless shackles. The video ends with a pleasant sunset sail on Lunenburg Bay. Day 1 of our Scotland adventure starts early… very early. We’re heading from Hampshire up to Scotland to begin the NC500, with a long day of driving ahead of us. After a broken night’s sleep in a motorway stop (thanks to loud cars and even louder exhausts), we push on north with seven-plus hours still to go. Somewhere past Birmingham, stopping at a quiet reservoir, the journey really begins to change. Motorways slowly give way to hills, valleys and that first proper feeling of Scotland — including the moment we finally pass the “Welcome to Scotland” sign. By the end of the day, the miles are worth it. We arrive at an incredible spot at the end of Loch Ness, with a private beach, a stream, space for a small campfire and views that make every tired mile disappear. After weeks of waiting, we finally leave Turks & Caicos—but not without nerves. The weather window wasn’t ideal, the seas were big, and a fast-moving thunderstorm had us pushing hard to stay ahead of it. The reward? Safe arrival in Luperón Harbour, Dominican Republic, just in time to settle in for hurricane season. Once the anchor is down, everything slows way down. We find our rhythm in Luperón—fresh local food, daily routines, new friendships, and tackling the never-ending list of boat projects that come with life aboard. 🎶 **Sailing Intermission – Dancing, Exhaust, and a Bomb Cyclone?!** 🌊 This episode kicks off with Karen dancing to some surf music before we dive into boat projects and everyday life aboard. We finally get our riser prepped for reinstallation—this time for good and leak-free! That meant cutting away some fiberglass insulation to expose the 2.5" metal tubing so the exhaust elbow could be properly welded. To finish it off, we wrapped the newly welded section with exhaust insulation to keep things cool where they should be. Steve uses nail polish to mark the alignment points for the welder… then promptly puts those skills to *another* use by giving Karen a matching pedicure. He gets a little distracted by the dress she’s wearing but somehow manages to paint her toenails without incident. 😄 With a bomb cyclone headed toward Georgia and freezing temps on the way, we fill our 280-gallon water tank before the marina shuts off the water. That should keep us going for about 10 days.
