Caliber 33 Used Boat Review: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sailboat-reviews/caliber-33/ If you’ve ever wondered “should I buy a motor sailor?”, this is the video for you. Motorsailers are one of the most misunderstood types of sailboats, blending the comfort and protection of a trawler with the efficiency and range of a sailboat. Whether you're thinking about living on a motorsailer, coastal cruising, doing the Great Loop, or just want a boat that can handle light winds without constant frustration, this deep dive explores the real pros and cons. We break down what motorsailers actually do well, where they fall short, and whether a motor sailor lifestyle is right for you. In this Practical Sailor-style review, we take a close look at the Cape Dory MS300, a classic 30-foot pilothouse motor sailor known for its solid construction, full keel stability, and comfortable cruising layout. We cover sailing performance, motoring ability, liveaboard comfort, common owner-reported issues, and what to watch for before buying. If you're considering a Cape Dory motorsailer or comparing it to other cruising sailboats, this video will give you the honest, no-nonsense insight you need before making a decision. Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

The first Seawind 1270 is steadily taking shape at our manufacturing headquarter, where the hull is coming to life under the direct guidance of CEO Richard Ward and our dedicated project team led by Project Development Manager - Danny Searle. From these formative early stages through to the finest technical details, every step of the construction reveals the true character and structural integrity of what this vessel will become. It is a meticulous journey of bringing form and function together with the precision our owners expect. This represents the defining moment where the 1270 begins to feel real, offering the closest look yet at the craftsmanship behind the build. Following this initial progress, we will present the second part of the lamination process before the vessel transitions to the assembly stages. Throughout this journey, every phase remains subject to rigid quality control protocols to ensure that the exacting standards of the Seawind Group are met at every single milestone. 🔔 Subscribe and be part of the journey. 🌐 https://seawindcats.com/ 📩 info@seawindcats.com Our social media profiles: https://www.facebook.com/SeawindCatamarans https://www.instagram.com/seawindcats

2,000 miles of open ocean behind you. The anchor drops. And suddenly… life on land feels foreign. This is Part 2 of our Atlantic crossing aboard Balance 526 Väster — and it's less about sailing, and more about what happens when you arrive somewhere so remote, so real, and so utterly unlike anywhere else on earth, that it stops you in your tracks. St Helena Island sits alone in the South Atlantic. No cruise ship crowds. No tourist traps. Just 4,500 warm souls, 699 steps of sheer grit, a fish fry that brings the whole town together, and a restaurant that sailors have been talking about for decades. We were lucky enough to share the anchorage with Windigo — the first ever Balance 580 to make this passage — which made an already extraordinary landfall feel like something even more special. This is what the Balance community looks like when it meets on the water. Onboard Väster: – Dean Paarman (Balance Catamarans) – Kirk & Catherine Brunsen (Owners) – Josh Solomon (Captain) Boat: Balance 526 Väster 🌍 Read the full story: 👉 https://balancecatamarans.com/atlantic-crossing-part-2/ (link live soon) 🔗 Miss Part 1? Cape Town to St Helena: 👉 https://balancecatamarans.com/atlantic-crossing-part-1/ 🏝️ Planning a stop at St Helena? Here's what you need to know: St Helena is one of the most remote islands on earth — and one of the most rewarding stops on any Atlantic passage. A subtropical paradise where mountainous terrain and microclimates create an astounding diversity of landscapes, all within a few minutes' drive. St Helena Tourism 🧭 Start here: 👉 Official St Helena Tourism: https://sthelenatourism.com 👉 Visitor Information (St Helena Government): https://www.sainthelena.gov.sh/visitors/ 🍽️ Anne's Place — Don't skip it. A family-run institution in Jamestown, tucked behind Castle Gardens, known for traditional home-cooked local cuisine — St Helena fish cakes, fresh local fish, and a warm welcome that sailors never forget. St Helena Tourism Its ceiling is a canopy of flags from vessels all over the world, each signed by the crew. Visitors' books tell the story of decades of passages. St Helena Island We left a new log book and started a Balance sticker tradition on the phone booth — keep it going. 👉 https://sthelenatourism.com/restaurants/annes-place/ 🐟 The Wednesday Night Fish Fry at the Yacht Club On Wednesday nights, it feels as if all of Jamestown turns out for the weekly fish fry, held quayside along the harbour. With cold drinks, sea air and animated conversation, the St Helena Yacht Club reveals itself as a true community hub and a welcoming haven for visitors. Become a member. It costs almost nothing (5GBP) and it means everything. 🚗 Hire a car and drive the interior — we can't recommend this enough. Car hire is the most practical way to explore the island. Sainthelenaisland All hire is through small local businesses — personal, affordable, and far better than any chain. Book well in advance as demand is high, not just from visitors but from returning Saints as well. St Helena Tourism 👉 Car hire listings: https://sthelenatourism.com/hire-types/rental-car-hire/ 🪜 Jacob's Ladder — You have to do it. 699 steps between lower Jamestown and Ladder Hill Fort, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the island's history. St Helena Tourism 280 metres of walking distance. 185 metres of elevation. Average 40-degree incline. Don't say we didn't warn you. 📖 For visiting sailors — everything you need: 👉 https://sainthelenaisland.info/visiting_by_yacht/ 👉 Noonsite port info: https://www.noonsite.com/place/st-helena/jamestown/ 💳 Practical tip: Card acceptance is limited. Another calm night with stable winds, which meant we actually got some proper sleep. We’re both starting to feel a lot better, and my cold is gone. But something still feels a bit off. I can’t really put my finger on it… just not quite 100% yet. At the same time, I’m starting to feel restless. Like I want to move again, which I guess is a good sign. So I did some stretching, just to get the body going a bit. We’ve had some water come in through the bathroom hatch, and of course the drain is on the opposite tack… so that area is now pretty flooded. One of those small, annoying things you just have to deal with. I did my daily check of the boat, going through everything, making sure all is as it should be. So far, things are looking good. Slowly getting back into rhythm again. 🌊 ⚓ Life on the Showgirl is my journey toward one of the toughest solo sailing races on the planet: the Golden Globe Race — sailed solo, non-stop, and without modern technology. Installing the Furuno NavNet TZtouch XL on SV GOAT — Full Helm Upgrade & Feature Walkthrough After running a TZtouch3 onboard for a while, I finally pulled the trigger on the new Furuno TZtouch XL [TZT__X]. Howdy folks! Welcome back to Nomad Boat Building. My name is Mark Reuten, and this video is part of the Poulsbo Boat Project, where I’m documenting the complete build of a traditional Poulsbo Boat from start to finish. In this episode, we build the station molds—the forms that define the shape of the hull. These molds are critical to the entire build, as every plank we install will reference them. Instead of using plywood, I walk through my preferred method of building molds from solid 1x material. This approach is more economical, easier to work with in the shop, and allows the material to be reused after the molds are no longer needed. We go step-by-step through laying out the mold shape from the plans, transferring the geometry using simple tools, cutting the curves on the bandsaw, and assembling the molds with gussets and cross spalls. Along the way, I also cover notch layout for inwales and risers, fairing considerations, and a few lessons learned (including what not to do). The Poulsbo Boat is being built using strip planking with cedar strips, reinforced with fiberglass inside and out—a blend of traditional and modern boatbuilding techniques. If you're interested in woodworking, traditional craftsmanship, and practical boat shop problem solving, this series follows the entire build from start to finish. I had a realization this week… I’ve started to forget how unusual this life actually is. We’re sailing the Cape Verde islands, living full-time on our small sailboat — something that once felt completely out of reach. And yet, somewhere along the way, it started to feel… normal. In this episode, I head out alone on a hike up Monte Gordo on the island of São Nicolau while Floh recovers from an injury. Out there, surrounded by nothing but ocean and rugged volcanic landscapes, I’m reminded of something simple — and powerful: the importance of feeling awe. Because this life hasn’t become less extraordinary… I just got used to it. ⛵ In this episode: – Sailing from Tarrafal to Mindelo – Life on a sailboat in Cape Verde – Solo hiking Monte Gordo (São Nicolau) – Reflections on awe, perspective & slow travel – Living full-time on a sailboat Sometimes, all it takes is a moment alone to remember what once felt impossible. 👇 Have you ever experienced something that once felt extraordinary… becoming your normal? Facing the challenges of solo sailing as a female sailor, I navigated the highs and lows of single-handed sailing while tackling DIY boat repair projects, from engine fixes to full boat refits on a budget. My life aboard was a mix of adventure and reflection, shaping an independent woman’s story of resilience, personal growth, and embracing the sailing lifestyle. Along the way, I became an ocean conservation activist with In Mocean, stumbled across my dog Boga, and discovered the joys and challenges of sailing with a dog. Now, I’m exploring a new chapter, having jumped aboard my partner’s Hallberg Rassy Rasmus with Boga and his Australian Kelpie, Jango. Together, we face the unique dynamics and challenges of sailing as a couple, balancing off-grid life, sustainable sailing, and the demands of long-term cruising. If you’re interested in remote sailing adventures, authentic sailing stories, and the realities of living on a sailboat, this channel offers a glimpse into the world of DIY projects, the sailing lifestyle, and life’s transformative moments on the water. Can you imagine a boat shaped like a zipper? 🤐🌊 Discover the incredible story of the "Zip-Fastener Ship", a masterpiece created by Japanese artist Yasuhiro Suzuki. What started in 2004 as a simple optical illusion from an airplane window became a real naval engineering challenge capable of carrying passengers and sailing the waters of Japan. In this video, we explore: ✈️ How the idea to "hack the viewer's perception" was born. 🚤 The first tests with the radio-controlled prototype. 🛠️ The hydrodynamic challenges to achieve the perfect foam lines. 🌊 Its full-scale debut at the Setouchi International Art Festival (2010). 🗼 Its iconic navigation down the Sumida River in Tokyo (2020), symbolically "sewing" the city together with the sponsorship of YKK. While it may seem like a trivial concept, there are countless hours of calculation and design behind this peculiar hull. 👇 Let me know what you think in the comments! We live fully off-grid 100% of the time, relying on solar panels to draw in enough power to run all our systems onboard but we never have enough storage capacity to keep us going through the cloudy days...but all that is about to change. Need a VA clinic in the Dominican Republic? We found one in Puerto Plata, and it’s a game-changer for veteran cruisers. . THE GRIND: We hauled our veteran carcasses off the boat in Luperon and pointed the truck toward Puerto Plata (19.7934° N, 70.6884° W). The mission? Navigating the VAFMS technical hellscape for C&P exams and picking up Bella’s Titer Test results. That folder took a literal trip to Europe and back just so we can get her back to the States. . THE PIVOT: We checked into a $60/night Airbnb to abuse the "free" water. Between "Rapido" and "Fuzzy" settings, it was a race to strip the Luperon silt out of our shirts. Seeing that grey laundry water was the lifestyle win we needed. . THE REWARD: A night of hot showers (until they weren't), a massive burger, and a run to the "secret" wholesale spot for the cheapest Ron on the island. We capped it off with a brand-new Black & Decker coffee maker and a move to a safer mooring "zip code" near the mangroves. Hell, I’d rather fight a mosquito than a runaway hull. . TRAVEL FAQ: Q: I’m terrified I’ll lose my VA benefits living in the DR. Is there help? A: The forensic bottom line is yes; Puerto Plata has dedicated VA service providers. Ensure your contact info is updated in the VAFMS portal before you arrive. If your paperwork isn't squared away, your reimbursements hit a brick wall. Having a high-quality scanner on board is a requirement for this life. Q: Can I really get my dog back to the US from here? A: Yes, but it requires a Rabies Titer Test. You have to send blood work to an approved lab (ours went to Europe). It takes weeks to process, so plan your trip well before your departure date. Don’t let the USDA catch you at the border without that folder. Q: Is it safe to stay in a cheap $60 Airbnb in Puerto Plata? A: It’s functional and generally safe, but expect it to be loud. The roads are narrow enough to shave the paint off a donkey. We used it primarily for the "laundry race" to get the boat grime out. Watch out for those bathroom "step-ups"—they’ll claim a toe if you aren't careful. Q: Where do I find the best deals on rum and gas? A: Look for the wholesale-style shops on the main road between Puerto Plata and Luperon, right where it transitions to a two-lane road. You’ll save 30-40% compared to city prices. It’s the perfect spot to stock up before heading back to the boat for sundowners.
