Zwei-Gang-Winsch warten: Demontage, Reinigung und Montage selbst gemacht – kein Spezialwerkzeug, wenig Ersatzteile. Ich zeige dir, wie ich eine vernachlässigte Winsch Schritt für Schritt zurück zum Leben bringe. Meine Winschen sind 30 Jahre alt – und ich gestehe: Ich habe in den ersten zwei Jahren nur die nötigsten davon gewartet. Was ich beim Öffnen der Glocke gesehen habe, hat mich ehrlich erschreckt: komplett trockene Zahnräder, verharzte Fettreste in den Zähnen, ein Dorn der sich kaum bewegen ließ. Die Klinken waren schon poliert – das ist der Zustand, den du vermeiden willst. Winschen sollten einmal im Jahr gewartet werden, dann bist du schnell fertig und sparst dir teure Reparaturen. Not every sailing day goes to plan… and this one REALLY didn’t 😅 We kick things off with a beautiful, calm sail past Cabo Rojo Lighthouse—one of the most stunning coastlines in Puerto Rico. But from there… things start to unravel. We anchor in La Parguera hoping to experience the famous bioluminescent bay… but it’s a total fail. Next stop, Ponce, for a much-needed resupply—but we tried to take a short cut to the store which involves one of our sketchiest dinghy rides yet, battling waves crashing as we enter the creek 😬 (fail #2). Hoping to turn things around, we sail to Caja de los Muertos (Coffin Island)—a stunning island with crystal-clear water. But even here, our hike to the lighthouse turns into another fail thanks to a brutal cactus-covered trail 🌵 Thankfully, not everything goes wrong… we find some incredible snorkeling and wrap things up sailing into Salinas. Returning from our California trip we had a DIY project waiting for us. The Dometic reverse cycle air conditioner unit that was ordered came in early while we were away and was ready for pick up. Getting it from dock to deck to cockpit and finally salon was no easy feat. It is always nerve racking moving something that heavy with the chance of it falling into the drink! Steve had built a plank and it proved very helpful in making the transition easier. There were a few tweaks before the installation of the Dometic. With the previous unit there was an imbalance of airflow. Too much in the main cabin and too little in the salon. Steve custom made a baffle to place in the duct work that would divert more of the airflow into the salon and away from the cabin area. Additionally, the drip pan drain was a little too high to allow complete drainage from condensation. A couple of pieces of wood were secured to the floor of the installation area which would allow the unit to be tilted slightly to provide proper drainage. Finally, the unit was in place and cool air filled the cabin and salon. It’ll make for a comfortable summer. Lots of biting no-see-um bugs are about and can make outside activities unbearable. It was a thrill to see tree swallows darting all about knowing they were catching as many of those bugs as fast as they could. Eat up little guys! It's been a while since we polished our spare propeller and it has been sitting on the aft deck glistening in the sun ever since. Karen went in the aft sail locker preparing to help guide the propeller into place. The area was too tight and she had to come out so Steve could lower it down. Oops, now it looks like we might need to paint that locker. It is so nice to be back home on board Isabella. We truly appreciate all the support from our subscribers and viewers. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. After months of rebuilding and living off the boat, we finally hit a turning point in our sailboat refit… we’re moving back aboard—even though the boat is far from finished. In this episode, we begin the process of putting the boat back together—reinstalling drawers, doors, and interior panels that have been out for what feels like forever. It’s a huge mental shift from teardown to rebuild, and seeing the spaces come back to life is incredibly motivating. At the same time, we made a big (and slightly crazy) decision: 👉 leave our apartment and move back onto the boat full-time. Right now, the boat is still very much a work in progress: No running water No permanent power (just extension cords to shore power) Minimal cooking setup And a 3-minute walk across the yard for the bathroom, showers, dishes… everything We focused on making just two spaces barely livable—our stateroom and the galley. And by “finished,” we mean the essentials: drawers back in, a mattress on the bed, and a place to put our clothes. It’s not comfortable. It’s not convenient. But it feels right. Eliminating the daily commute to the boatyard gives us back time and energy, and being onboard again is already pushing us to work longer, stay focused, and make faster progress toward launch. This is the reality of a liveaboard sailboat refit—messy, inconvenient, and sometimes uncomfortable—but also incredibly rewarding as we get closer to getting back in the water. Salut les loulous ⚓⛵ Je largue les amarres avec l’excitation d’un nouveau départ. Direction Boa Vista. L’ancre remonte lentement, les voiles se hissent… mais le vent, lui, se fait attendre. La mer est calme, presque trop. Je décide alors d’aider un peu le destin en lançant le moteur. Le bateau glisse, docile, sur une eau d’huile. En chemin, une rencontre inattendue vient briser la monotonie : un dauphin surgit, élégant et libre, fendant les flots à mes côtés. Fasciné, je me précipite à l’avant pour immortaliser l’instant. Dans mon élan, j’oublie l’essentiel : mon gilet de sauvetage. Une erreur. Une vraie. La mer, même calme, ne pardonne jamais l’imprudence. Le voyage se poursuit sans encombre, et bientôt les côtes de Boa Vista se dessinent à l’horizon. À l’arrivée, je mets pied à terre, encore imprégné de cette traversée. Je pars explorer les environs. Sal Rei m’accueille avec ses maisons aux couleurs vives, éclatantes sous le soleil. Les ruelles respirent la simplicité et la douceur de vivre. Je flâne, sans but précis, porté par l’atmosphère tranquille du lieu. Puis vient la plage : vaste, lumineuse, presque irréelle. Le sable fin et la mer turquoise offrent un contraste apaisant après l’immensité de l’océan. Je prends un moment pour m’arrêter, regarder autour de moi, et savourer l’instant. Ici, à Boa Vista, quelque chose s’apaise.
