Do you want to find out how we reversed the moisture build up in our fibre glass boat hull for less than £100 ? The biggest unknown in our rebuild project was our ability to ward off future osmosis stemming from the excess water which had seeped into the core of the hull over the years. The advice we had been given was that if it was not showing now and if we resealed the bottom of the boat with Epoxy that there was a good chance that it would not become a problem. While we trusted the expert opinion that we would be OK we decided to give some drying options a go. What is fibreglass Osmosis ? The gel coat finish on the exterior of many fibreglass boats is reinforced plastic which is porous. As water is a solvent, when boat is afloat the water reacts with the fibreglass to create a weak solvent solution, usually with styrene. The process starts from the day the boat is launched, gradually increasing the longer the boat is in the water. In the worst cases this reaction will soften the gel coat, over time the build up can combine with gas or fluid pressure which results in the external water getting sucked into the small pockets of space within the laminate. Filling the gaps in the fibre glass with water and soluble components left over from the build process. In the most extreme cases this buildup can present as an external blister on the surface of the boat. In simple terms if you leave your boat in the water for extended periods of time the chemical reaction can slowly suck moisture into the fibre glass and further into and reinforcement inside the hulls core (usually closed cell foam or wood). If enough water is sucked in the chemical reaction can produce enough pressure to create external blisters in your boats finish. During our last couple days at Governor's Harbour, we check out the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve. I'll admit, that Tambi was far more excited about walking through the woods and looking at a bunch of plants than I was. When we arrived, and I had a chance to get a better understanding of the park, it's quality, and it's purpose, I began to get a bit more interested. This plant park is actually quite nice! It's very clean, very well run, and the experience was educating and relaxing. I enjoyed my time walking through the bush and looking at plants after all. After the park, Keith and the Sandflea crew part ways, as we change gears and prepare to leave Governor's Harbour for Alabaster Bay. We need to get water, turn the boat back into a sailboat, instead of a floating apartment, and we also have to be sure that our immigration is up-to-date. Wooop, we had the most amazing holiday in the Philippines in June, diving at Malapascua Island (with the thresher sharks), Moalboal (with lots of turtles) and Oslob (with 14 whalesharks!!). In Havana, Race for Water is still a source of curiosity and great conversations. The crew was recently treated to a surprise : a historic visit from Rear Admiral Msc. José L Cuza Téllez de Girón, who fought alongside Raúl Castro in the Cuban revolution. He took advantage of Race for Water’s stopover in Havana to tour the ship and learn about our mission to promote renewable energy and fight plastics pollution. In talking with the crew, Msc. José L Cuza Téllez de Girón showed great interest in the state of the world’s oceans, and the need to take action to protect them. We were able to capture the conversation on video. The Race for Water Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the water and the oceans in particular. Today, seriously under threat from plastic pollution, it is imperative that this essential resource for life is protected.To prevent plastic waste from reaching the waterways and oceans by developing social models and business models that give value to plastic waste and hence encourage its collection. We set off on a Delos Dives Madagascar Expedition! We’d heard rumors about a few epic dive sites only a day sail away from our trusty anchorage in Nosy be! She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. How to generate power on board is a question we are asked a lot, by people who are new to sailing or are considering a life on the water. So we decided to make a video. Ta-dah! Here it is, complete with my ageing frame on the foredeck as thumbnail clickbait! Who needs bikini clad strumpets when a middle aged Londoner is about eh??? First a little disclaimer. This " nuts and bolts " video is not aimed at those with a huge working knowledge of physics or electronics. Similarly, sailors who are on their 9th circumnavigation in a 22ft wooden ketch and don't know why anyone would "need a fridge", may find this a little tedious. There is no mention of V=IR or P=IV anywhere ( I considered it, and then realised that I didn't want to lose subscribers by boring the arse out of them. It is a broad strokes discussion about how we create and manage energy on our boat, which I hope you find useful. Also, please do your own research on anything I have said before you make a decision. These are are informed opinions from research on the interweb and from years of experience. However that doesn't mean i'm right.So use this as a starting point to carry on exploring the subject.
