Last month we enjoyed a week of diving in the Solomon Islands. We flew via Brisbane to Honiara and then on to Munda in the Western Province with a group of 18 divers! Our group was split over 4 boats with 2 guides and a boat driver and we explored many of the wrecks in the area! There are plain wrecks to explore, a big Japanese shipwreck and obviously lots of reefs and wall dives! Sneak Peek of the WIDER 130 Super Yacht I have always had a soft spot for the WIDER Shipyard. They have shown inspiring levels of courage in pioneering the use of diesel electric propulsion on their yachts. The WIDER 150, now sold and delivered to her new owner, was quite simply one of the most beautiful and well executed yachts I have ever seen. The smaller model, for now known as the WIDER 130, is planned to be an entry level yacht. She will have the same diesel electric propulsion system as her bigger sibling, shall have an aluminium hull and superstructure, and promises to be a great success. Sailing our RL28 trailer sailer "Neringa" out of Able Point Marina Airlie Beach to explore the central Whitsunday Islands. With 10 days we circumnavigate Whitsunday and Hazelwood Islands visiting Gulnare inlet and discover an old timber tramway. Windy bay and then White Bay on Hazelwood Island are our next stops to explore and snorkel on Hazelwood Reef. With signs of cyclone damage everywhere we were hopeful that this sheltered reef may have escaped. The coral and fish life were good but even here damage was seen. Chance bay and Hill Inlet were our next stops in this episode. Except for the first and last days of our trips we had near perfect weather with sunshine and light winds. An absolutely glorious trip! The disassembly of the Autoprop H6 propeller enters its final stage as the lipp seals ands bearing tracks are removed from the blades and hub respectively. Removal of the lipp seal is typically a destructive operation so care should be taken with the removal if you intend to reuse them or keep them as an emergency spare. The bearing tracks are perhaps the most challenging part to remove. If the bearings have been regularly greased they should be able to be worked out using a degreaser and hot water. If there is any rust whatsoever on the blade bearing tracks a more mechanical solution will be required. For some propeller rebuilds we have cut the tracks out with a small cutting wheel or lifted them out having drilled holes through the hard steel to get a purchase.

Paul Ridley is a rower turned sailor. He took up rowing in 2005 and within 4 years rowed 3,000nm across the Atlantic Ocean. Facing the worst nature had to offer, he was blown backwards 200 miles after a bad storm. Next came the Arctic Ocean, the only ocean that had never been rowed across. In August 2012, a team of four young explorers completed an unsupported, non-stop, record-setting voyage in one of the exploration world’s last great firsts. After 40 days and 1,000 miles, Collin West, Neal Mueller, Paul Ridley; Scott Mortensen powered their way along a dangerous section of the fabled Northwest Passage. Paul then purchased a Lagoon 38 and took up cruising with his wife, sailing from the UK to Spain, Porto, Lisbon, the Canary Islands, Antigua, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal with plans to head to the Galapagos, Marquesas’, Tahiti and then Australia next. The Crowther is named after the legendary Australian boat designer and builder Lock Crowther. His first boat was a trimaran built in 1959 while he was still a teenager. Over 2500 boats were built using his various designs. After his death in 1993, his son took over the business, which is when this vessel was built. Crowther Cats are know for applying innovative materials at the time, like GRP-foam sandwich construction, and concepts like wave piercing bows. Originally this design was a 40ft catamaran, and then in 1997 they launched an extended version by adding 3ft to the stern, with a comfortable swim platform.
