Snowbird is a term I heard a lot when in the US and it refers to people who live in the Northern States during the summer and then move South to Florida for the winter. It occured to me that while we don't get snowed in back in Australia I see exactly the same movement North from people in Melbourne and Sydney escaping the colder months and that this Riviera is an ideal boat to do that in. From an entertainmemt and liveaboard perspective this is a fantastic platform. She's also very easy and relaxing to operate from the primary helm with some of the best visability for a yacht of this size, making her a relaxing vessel in busy waterways. Add the convenience of a tender garage and the fact that it's a Riviera so she'll be ultra comfortable offshore and you have a very nice package for enjoying year round summers. Après 25h de navigation, nous arrivons bien poussé par les vagues à la marina Cap Cana en République Dominicaine. Nous prenons deux jours pour préparer Orion et faire l’avitaillement car nous attendons deux hôtes : Anne et Benoit, venant de Belgique. La côte ouest où se situe la marina étant forcément soumise aux vents et à la houle, nous faisons deux zones avec nos invités : la baie de Bahaibé et Isla Saona au sud-ouest et dans un deuxième temps la baie de Samana au nord-ouest. Il y a à nouveau 24h de navigation entre ces deux endroits. Pour rejoindre Bayahibé, nous prenons le canal de Saona : passage étroit au niveau des fonds (2 mètres à certains endroits) entre l’île principale et celle de Saona. Mais c’est une navigation pur plaisir : calme, vent arrière avec le code 0, protégé de la houle par la barrière de corail. Il faut juste être très vigilant par rapport aux fonds. Et puis à notre grand étonnement, la carte Navionics du tableau de bord est beaucoup moins précise que celle de l’application pour smartphone ! Heureusement que nous avons les deux ! L’embarquement d’Anne et Benoit se fait facilement à Bayahibé, petite ville très touristique qui déverse son lot de vacanciers tous les jours sur les plages de cartes postales d’Isla Saona. Nous profitons aussi de ces eaux turquoise et du sable blanc. Mais le plus beau est sous l’eau où raies, requin, poissons multicolores, langoustes, éponges et coraux nous en mettent plein la vue. Quelques heures de navigation tranquille nous emmènent d’un mouillage à l’autre. Les habitants vivent du tourisme et gèrent tant bien que mal ce qu’un nombre aussi conséquent de personnes laisse derrière lui : des déchets sont « cachés » à l’arrière des plages et flottent carrément dans les petits ports de pêcheurs orientés côté houle. Une bien triste réalité. Nous passons aussi à chaque escale par l’Armada : poste militaire où nous devons faire un « despacho » pour la surveillance en mer et notre sécurité. Cela peut prendre quelques minutes en une seule visite ou quelques heures en plusieurs passages !!! Après deux jours et deux nuits bien protégés, nous prenons la mer pour faire le tour de l’île en direction de la baie de Samana. La navigation commence par une escorte de dauphins pour nous égayer alors que les vagues et la houle viennent nous secouer de plus en plus ! Vivement l’arrivée en baie de Samana !

We wake up in Bosnia and drive to the most amazing waterfalls; Kravica Waterfalls. These are a must see while in Bosnia. We took a super fresh dip and enjoyed some lunch overlooking them. Our plans fell through that afternoon and we needed to find another nights accomodation on the fly while Google Maps took us to the wrong border... The weekend turned back around when we got to Podstrana and enjoyed a lovely afternoon with friends. We sailed from Townsville across to Magnetic Island and were pleasantly surprised by just how much it had to offer. From stunning beaches and a calm anchorage at Horseshoe Bay to a surprisingly fascinating WWII Fort walk, this island is full of history, nature, and charm. Along the way we spotted koalas in the trees, playful rock wallabies, and enjoyed exploring the island with the handy $1 daily bus pass. The summer doldrums continued. Toni and I have been making many changes to “Moments in Time” and now we wanted to relax. Toni and I simply committed to a couple days to go out. We packed some food and departed Solomons in the spitting rain and dying winds. We managed to get the sails up and sailed for a little while before enabling the iron gennys and motor sailing to St. John’s Creek off of St. Leonard Creek. We dropped the hook and relaxed, watching the pop-up thunderstorms and jumping whenever lightning flashed too close. However, it cooled the evening temperatures. This is the first trip that we took with the “Miss Annemarie”, our carbon fiber dinghy. We did some sightseeing, visited a deserted beach, and went out to dinner. Two nights was not long enough but prior commitments forced our return to Solomons. It was a short but great trip. Having a dinghy opens many more options while anchored. We sail from Pisang Island into Johor Bahru, passing under the bridge that links Malaysia and Singapore before entering Puteri Harbour. Once docked, we explore the ambitious yet eerie Forest City (also called Ghost City) before being welcomed with a festive dinner and drinks as part of the Sail Malaysia Rally. The rally also takes us on a cultural and sightseeing tour of Johor Bahru, where we visit the historic Sultan Ismail Building and Johor State Legislative Assembly, explore the Tanjung Piai Mangrove Nursery, and stand at the southernmost point of Peninsular Malaysia. We even enjoy a sweet stop at a pineapple farm, sampling delicious products, and finish with a vibrant cultural experience. Anchors down, beaches empty, and not a soul in sight. In this episode of Sailing Dark Angel we cruise from Water Cay back to Georgetown, slipping through the skinny Hog Cay Cut. Georgetown’s quiet for hurricane season, but the beaches are still gorgeous and all but ours. From diving murky anchors at Honeymoon to chasing calmer water at Da Sand Bar, it’s all part of getting set for the next big blow. ⚠️ Lightning Strike Update In real time, we were directly struck by lightning.
