Ce n'était pas une plongée plaisir pour admirer les fonds marins mais une plongée technique pour enlever deux longues lignes de pêche qui s'étaient enroulées autour de l'hélice lors de notre traversée de Fuerteventura vers Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The kids were playing their guitars on the back of the boat at Gt Barrier a few months back and came up with a tune and some silly lyrics after staying at Smokehouse Bay. Over the last little while we've written it down and then recorded the guitars into Garageband and added some drums. We went back to Smokehouse bay more recently and had a load of fun filming a video. I can see now how the Sex Pistols and other punk bands were born. All done in good fun!

Beautiful Barbuda was pretty much destroyed by hurricane Irma in 2017 and the island and its 2700 inhabitants are still making baby steps towards recovery, the original school is not yet re-opened, Red Cross and Good Samaritan tents still dot the foreshore but despite all this the locals hang on, the frigate birds have returned to their colony in the damaged mangroves, the fishermen still ply their lobster trade (for amazing prices - $10USD for 5 lobster), the water is still an amazing blue, the sand a beautiful pink/white and the snorkeling was some of the best we have seen here in the Caribbean with a massive spotted ray, nurse shark and lots of little fish and lobster. In this episode we also haul-out in Jolly Harbour in Antigua to touch up our anti-foul and replace some through-hulls and get a 1000 hour service for our motor before our big Pacific crossing coming up soon. We are the Robbins family sailing on our boat named Nikau. We are a family of 5. Our 3 kids are doing NZ correspondence school on board. They are growing to love it! What's not to love about 3 hours of school a day and then a different playground for the afternoon every day! We've traveled from New Zealand to Sardinia in Italy to pick up our boat and we plan over a few seasons to sail her back to New Zealand. We hope you enjoy following us on our adventures! This was originally edited for my Cruising Off Duty channel but since it is a gear review, it belongs here as well. After years of filming with the Panasonic GH4 and GH5 and investing in the Panasonic Lenses, I have finally decided to switch to Sony. I just bought the Sony A7iii and that means investing in an entirely new line of lenses. It is not cheap! The reason? WEll, I just couldn't put up with Panasonic's unreliable Autofocus anymore. To get smooth shots you often want to put your camera on a gimbal but then you are swinging the camera around and not manually focussing and that means you have to trust that your autofocus will stay in focus and nut "hunt" for focus and ruining your shots. Sony is known for amazing autofocus but that does not mean that my GH5 is going in the garbage or going to collect dust. Far from it. There are still a lot of things that the Panasonic GH5 does better than the Sonys. Thanks for watching and continuing on our adventure with us. We know it isn’t easy with such irregular uploads but your support is very much appreciated. This episode starts on Saint Martin and we end up on Anguilla, so really we visited The Netherlands, France and the UK all in a couple of days. It’s really interesting to see the difference in the European colonies and how each country still has an influence after Hurricane Irma. The people on Dutch St Martin especially are among the kindest and friendliest we’ve met in the Caribbean so far and despite the devastation couldn’t be more positive and upbeat. It’s only a short sail (but a fast one) to Anguilla and once there, Road Bay offers the most shelter from the trade winds and an interesting ship wreck of an old tanker at the south end of the beach. You can easily drive around the whole island in a day and as usual, us and the Aussies decided to try a beer in every bar. Tips for cleaning Brass and bronze. Our boat has loads so I've tried all sorts of things to make the job easy, all the vinegar - lemon juice concoctions and all the pastes and creams. Brasso was my favorite for years, but now I have two things that cut cleaning time in half! I tell you the things I cheat with too!!! Ongoing information / testing: You may have seen in the episodes that I tried a nano technology product (Gtechniq) on some of the bronze. The manufacturers warned it wasn't what the product was meant for but would be interesting to see if it helped so I tried it on small areas inside and out. Initially it seemed to do a good job a slowing tarnishing but when the bronze did tarnish it turned black and was then difficult to clean, so overall not recommended. I still clean in the same way with Bar keepers friend and 3m's restorer but I sometimes use the cream version of the Bar keepers friend for a quickclean, less messy but ultimately not and good for stubborn marks. I've been through many different lacquers, some were awful! So far the best seems to be Everbrites 'Protectaclear' which comes with a cleaner and goes on really well. After months of stripping and then sanding the boat it was time to kick off the rebuild process. The respray of our Mumm 36 was one of the more rewarding couple of days of the rebuild. It was the first time that all the effort felt like it was going to produce a result, which could end up being quite amazing. The two pack paint provide a shinny rock hard finish which would protect the hull for many years to come. While there were still some bumps in the hull you could hardy see them with the light reflecting off the smooth final finish once the paint job was finished. This week we leave Ios on a beautiful winters morning. After all the storms, rain, sleet, hail, winds and clouds we have experienced in the Dodecanese and Cyclades in the last couple of months we lap up the sun, sunrises and sunsets! We cruise through the middle of the Cyclades where we can see Naxos, Paros, Anti Paros, Sikinos, Sifnos and Milos all at the same time. We decide to anchor for the night in Pyrogonisi Bay near Alyki on the Island of Kimolos. It is calm, quiet, picturesque, green and we are fortunate enough to take in the crystal clear waters, stunning sunrise and the biggest super moon of the year! The next day we head to Milos passing Klima the colourful fishing village. We experience the calmest day since we bought our boat and several turtles popping up to say hello. As usual with sailing in the Cyclades in winter, there is no one at the anchorage in Adamas except for many dugongs which was really cool to see. Jase is still on the hunt for a fish as we sail the mediterranean and although we don't land it, he experiences his first close encounter on the way to Kithnos haha. Kithnos is stunning and we would have loved to stay longer however we are in a rush to beat 60 knot gusts in the coming days. Seems like over winter there was always a big blow or storm coming through the Cyclades every few days. We hope you enjoy!
