May 2018 In this weeks episode Dave is at work and I have my friend Sara visiting from the UK , she was only coming for one week...this ended up being one month!! It was great having her with me as I was alone in Miami. She's also a great cook which was a bonus! Our Aussie friends Brain and Ang arrive into Hollywood Marina so we were super excited to hang out with them. We all had a great day watching the royal wedding. May 2018. After being off work for 10 months we have completely run out of money so it's time for me to go back to work. We get a lot of questions about how we find our adventure so I thought it was time to answer a few questions. This whole adventure is funded by my job as a saturation diver in the oil and gas industry. I've been a professional diver for 23 years, spent over 4 years of my life underwater and worked all over the World. This job was in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth of 208m. Unfortunately the sea bed was very muddy and visibility was near zero most of the time so underwater footage wasn't possible. In a nut shell, we spend 28 days under pressure in a chamber and transfer down to the seabed in a bell each day to work for 6 hours in the water putting pipelines together. After 18 days of diving, we decompress from 200m to the surface very slowly to avoid "the bends" (gas bubbles in your body). Decompression from 200m takes just under 10 days. I hope you enjoy a small glimpse into my world. Please leave a comment, ask questions, give us a thumbs up and share to help us build up our channel again. April 2018. In this episode Phil shows off his pilots skills and takes me for a flight over the amazing Miami skyline. Hayley takes the opportunity of being on land and in the bikini capital of the world to get stuck into some of her work on Daley Swim. Starting a business on your own while sailing and living at sea is much harder than being on land so she makes the most of city life to get the ball rolling. All with the help of her best friend Phil who also has a swimwear line, check it out https://www.swimmanus.com We have just about run out of of money by this point, in fact we had borrowed quite a bit to make it to America so it's time for me to go to work. I've not worked for 10 months so I need to get back offshore and earn some money before our baby arrives. Hayley is now 5 months pregnant so she is in need of meeting her midwife and getting the 20 week scan so we need to get to the UK and get organised to have a baby. We hadn't seen family and friends for a long time so we wanted to have a gender reveal party and for all of us to find out together if it's a little boy or girl in Mummy's tummy. You'll have to watch and find out... Please leave a comment, a thumbs up and share to help us build up our channel again. If you guys enjoy and want more, we'll keep making them for you. Firstly, I'd like to make a couple of THANK YOU's. Nim and Fab from Sail Luna helped us so much we can't thank them enough. They followed our channel and got in touch when we were heading to Florida. Without their help, we never would have found a berth for SAII and the welcome we received was incredible. Thank You and we wish you all the success in the world with the luxury charters. Link below! Secondly, thanks to SUNTEX Marina in Hollywood who squeezed us into a full marina. How we ever got into that berth I will never know! Crossing the Gulf Stream can be quite daunting but with some planning and preparation, it's actually an easy crossing. Never leave unless the wind is from the south! The wind cycles around the clock so it's just a matter of being patient and picking your window. The Gulf Stream runs at around 3 knots so as long as it's in your favour, which it was for us, it can help to speed you across to the USA. We arrived in America at Fort Lauderdale and our marina in Hollywood is an hour motor to the south passing thru 3 bridges which all have to left before you can pass thru. This is all about timing and pretty easy once you've done it a couple of times. Please tune in for the next episode where we get ready to go back home to the UK. Please leave a comment, a thumbs up and share to help us build up our channel again. If you guys enjoy and want more, we'll keep making them for you. Video date: MARCH 2018. Firstly we'd like to say thanks for the lovely welcome back, the number of messages across all our social media was a huge surprise and makes the time spent editing all worth it. We hope everyone is happy, healthy and safe and that you continue to enjoy our adventure with us. (Video uploaded during the global quarantine). In this episode we navigate some very tricky, narrow and shallow entrances into and out of Harbor Island. You'll defo want to talk to some locals or sailors that have done these passages before attempting yourself. Harbor Island is a very special little place. Some very nice hotels, stunning beaches and the locals are great. If we didn't have deadlines to be in America then we would have stayed much longer. Much longer in the whole of the Bahamas to be fair. Much of the Bahamas is around 3m water depth so all navigation needs to be undertaken carefully. We got very lucky and managed to follow a super yacht out of the Harbor Island anchorage. "HOME" the super yacht we followed out was actually built as a shallow draft vessel just for the Bahamas! We are at the mercy of the wind (because we have very little fuel left and I didn't want to pay Bahamas fuel prices when we are headed for the States. Unfortunately it wouldn't blow us where we wanted and we ended up south of Bimini but that's sailing! There was a very narrow cut thru the reefs that's around 2m water depth so we launched the dinghy to test the way first. We made it. Next episode we cross the Gulf Stream and arrive in the US of A! In this episode we depart Pablo's underwater theme park and sail for Nassau to submit our passports to the US embassy. For those that want to know here's the visa process for admission to the USA by yacht: Apply online for B1/B2 USA visa. Make appointment at the nearest US embassy for an interview. Submit passport for 5 working days. Collect passport. We had to wait until we were in the Bahamas to arrange an interview as the US embassy in the USVI was destroyed by Hurricane Irma! So we flew from Georgetown to Nassau for our interview which went OK and we were approved but as we needed our passports to fly back to the boat we arranged to drop them off once we'd sailed into Nassau. The guys at the US embassy are pretty strict but were super helpful for us. Nassau is home to the original Atlantis Hotel so I was super excited about going to the water park. FYI, the water park is $80pp admission and a 45' catamaran is $250 per night in the marina with free admission for all crew (3 of us) so it was a no brainer. Our first night in a Marina in 4 months! In this episode we depart Staniel Cay and head for a tourist spot that is one of those spots everyone has heard of. All the girls on Instagram go there so of course Hayley wants to go to swim with the sharks. Unfortunately, the business is a victim of their own success and the queue for 'getting the shot' really spoils the spirit of the activity. I've dived with a lot of sharks over the years and never paid to do it! The guys that own the quay, sell you fish from their freezer to feed the sharks with and somehow, our $30 of fish was given to the girls in front of us so when it was our turn, no fish = no sharks. Hayley got the shot but poor Philip got in the water without a shark in sight and the owners were less than accommodating. I guess we can't get on with everyone so we put it down to experience and moved on. As we make our way North to Nassau, our next anchorage was called Warderick Wells. A dream location where you can feed the sharks from the back of your boat. They like bacon! From there we headed off to find the wreckage of a drug trafficking plane that Pablo Escobar used to fly drugs into Miami. They would stop off in the Bahamas to refuel but this plane cocked up the landing. I had a good look but everything of value was long gone! Next week we head for Nassau with a stop off to play with the iguanas on an idillic private beach. Please leave a comment, a thumbs up and share to help us build up our channel again. APRIL 2020. Well, those of you that have followed us since the early days may have been wondering where we've been! It's a long story, a 2 year long story in fact. March 2018. Hey again guys and thank you for watching! Our last episode was us in the Bahamas in March of 2018 and I'm sat waiting to upload this video in April 2020 in a very different World than the one we used to sail in but with much of the Planet confined to their homes, we think the least we can do is try and bring a smile or two to peoples faces via our videos. I hope we can manage that. We hope everyone is happy, healthy and safe and that you continue to enjoy our adventure with us. In this episode we visit pigs that live on the beach and watch at least a couple of tourists get bitten. We swim with sharks right by our boat (we don't get bitten) and consume far too much rum. Our anchorage was absolutely perfect in a couple of meters of crystal clear water, just outside the Staniel Cay Marina and a perfect dinghy ride over to the Thunder Ball Grotto where the James Bond film of the same name was filmed. We made some new friends in the Yacht Club and even managed to meet up with the guys from Tapati Nui (Ep 44) again for a flash dinner. Looking back thru the footage to edit this video fills us with so much pleasure and gratitude that we actually got to live this life. Please leave a comment, a thumbs up and share to help us build up our channel again. If you guys enjoy and want more, we'll keep making them for you. Hey guys! Sorry for the delay in this episode, we've literally been having too much fun to find time to edit but we hope this is worth it. We had a great time with our 'boat friends' in George Town. Big shout out to Tapati Nui and Le Pearl Noir. Pat and Steve, we hope you're still living the dream. If you ever visit the Bahamas then you absolutely have to go to Staniel Cay. It has it all, pigs, caves, sharks, crystal clear water, the cutest houses, a yacht club. What more could you ask for? There's so much to do in fact that it doesn't all fit in this episode so you'll have to stay tuned for our next video! Conception Island to George Town. Before we departed Conception we were invited for an incredible evening of food and good conversation on a super yacht called Cronos with our new friends Tom and Tara but all good things must come to an end and it's time to go get legal in George Town. A days sail away is probably the most popular anchorage in the Bahamas with regularly 200 yachts anchored in the channel. I'm not super keen on swimming in places like this to be honest if you get my drift... (see what I did there?). Stocking Island is across the channel from George Town and where we anchored. As we are not allowed to enter the USA without getting a visa first (B1B2), our plan was to fly from George Town to Nassau and visit the US embassy there. We made our appointments, booked cheap flights, a cheap hotel for 1 night and flew up. The usual plan is to leave the passports for them to issue the visa once it's approved but they kindly agreed to approve us and then issue the visa once we actually arrived up in Nassau by boat and could wait the 5 days for the return of our passports. You guys remember Philip from our early episodes? Well, he's BACK! Phil will be onboard with us for the next few weeks as we explore the Bahamas. Back in Turks and Caicos we made friends with the guys on catamaran Tribe which if you're a fan of cats... you know exactly what a gun boat is! This is the cream de la cream of cats. We raced them from T&C to Conception and what took us 3 days, they did in 1! Spike and Anna have sailed the Bahamas for years and literally gave us all the must see places so we could maximise our time before I have to head off and make some dollar. Thanks for following our adventure, we make these vids for you guys so please don't forget to leave us a comment and a thumbs up. Episode 42. Happy Easter everyone. We've been a great time lately but Hayley has done her best to get a video up for the Easter weekend. This episode sees us tackle our first reef as we make our way north and into the shallower waters. They are very scary the first few times to make an entry into an island and should never been taken for granted! Turks and Caicos is a playground for the rich and famous with some very high end resorts on the island... and a great Indian restaurant! We would have loved to spend more time here but with deadlines approaching we really want to head north and explore the Bahamas before I have to go to work. It's an easy 36 hour sail from T&C to the Bahamas (once past the reef) but you need to find somewhere to clear customs which for us would be George Town so a cheeky few nights at one of the islands on the way was what we decided on and Conception Island was our choice as it's totally uninhabited so we couldn't get in trouble. Thanks for following our adventure, we make these vids for you guys so please don't forget to leave us a comment and a thumbs up. I know, I know, we promised an episode a week and failed after only a few weeks! This was not Hayley's fault tho. She's had an issue with trying to export the finished episode from iMovie and it turns out there was 1 dodgy frame somewhere that was making it fail. It took us forever to find it! This editing business is NOT easy! Hats off to those who manage it every week but we'll continue to keep trying. This week we continue exploring the BVI and luckily Ben from AquaFrolic has just done his diving qualification so I've someone to go play underwater with. The RMS Rhone was a British mail ship that was sunk by a hurricane in 1867 and is possibly the most famous dive wreck in ythe BVI so I really wanted to dive it. Luckily, Benny was pretty keen for me to take him on his first dive after getting his ticket so I had a buddy. We sailed the 2 cats up to Salt Island and picked up a free mooring ball right on top of the wreck in Lee Bay. These days I get all my enjoyment in the water from seeing others enjoy themselves so I loved this dive with Ben's eyes as big as dinner plates. From Salt Island we sail to Jost Van Dyke Island and found ourselves a lovely anchorage in behind 2 reefs in White Bay. This is a major party spot with lots of day tourists from the other BVI and USVI drinking in the well renouned Soggy Dollar Bar or even Foxy's next door. We've spent most of our Caribbean adventure (and indeed our Atlantic crossing) with the crew of AquaFrolic so it was a sad goodbye but it's time for us to move onto the next place. Our plan was to head to the USVI which being American means we can book our interview with the USA immigration to get a visa for when we finally arrive by boat in Miami. As usual though, Hurricane Irma had a different plan for us and had destroyed the customs office. Turks and Caicos here we come! Thanks for following our adventure, we make these vids for you guys so please don't forget to leave us a comment and a thumbs up. Episode 40 Well, as promised here's this weeks episode for you guys. We hope you like it. We finished up last weeks ep as we arrived in the British Virgin Islands. What a place! Unfortunately, the BVI took the brunt of Hurricane Irma and many of the islands saw winds of up to 217mph. The devastation is heart breaking. The BVI was home to many of the world's charter catamarans and it seems to us that cats get hit harder by big winds, they get lifted up and flipped over whereas mono hulls get rolled over and washed ashore. We counted over 30 yachts washed ashore just in Trellis Bay on Tortola alone! There were 60' catamarans upside down up a hill in Road Harbour where most of the cats are berthed. We tried to island hop and see as much as we could but there isn't anywhere that wasn't hit hard by the hurricane. Starting east at Virgin Gorda, to have a quick Bath then heading west and downwind. Hayley's maiden name was Cooper so of course we had to go visit there and it turned out to be a great place to hide from the wind for a few days. Our friends who crossed the Atlantic with us were headed for The Bight on Norman Island which is normally home to the famous Willy T's floating bar but of course this didn't survive Irma either so we made our own fun! We helped our friends with their boat issues for a change and I took the kids for their first scuba dive using AquaFrolics shiny new hookah diving system. No diving for pregnant Hayley unfortunately! Ep 39. Those of you guys who have been following for a while will know about our issues with our Gennaker. More precisely, that bloody sail has been a nightmare for us that culminated in the middle of the Atlantic when it split into 2 halves. The sail loft in Saint Martin were great and pointed out to us that we've been flying it back to front the whole time since we started sailing! Apparently, the luff of the sail should be the longer edge. We've also now installed it in a sock as the sail isn't really suitable to be used with a furler as it doesn't have a torsion rope. After getting all our jobs done in Saint Martin, we clear out of customs and set sail for the British Virgin Islands with a cheeky little stop off on a deserted little island called Dog Island as it leaves us with a nice day light sail to get to BVI. After a romantic Valentines day and night as the only boat anchored on Dog Island, we set off for BVI. We were expecting a 12 hour sail but with 20kt winds off our starboard quarter we were flying. We managed 12kts in flat seas as we approached Richard Branson's island called Necker which unfortunately I didn't get on camera so you'll have to take my word for it. We've got our act together at long last and are planning to have a new episode uploaded for you every Sunday morning. Check back next week where we start exploring the amazing British Virgin Islands. Ep 38 WE HEAR THE BABY'S HEART BEAT! At long last we've reached the 12 week point in Hayley's pregnancy and head to a great Doc in St Martin and see and hear our little angel. You'll have to watch thru to the end to see how it goes. We start this episode in Anguilla doing all the regular maintenance jobs that yachts deserve and then head for Saint Martin in what we expected to be 35kts + so we got there pretty fast! That's nothing that Susan Ann II hasn't sailed before or can easily handle? it's just the crew (us) would prefer to avoid if possible but we had a hospital appointment to make. Cheers to those of you who took the time to help out with our water heater issue. It's a small problem but a real PITA changing that anode every 6 months when I know other Lagoon 450's that have never changed it! I'm typing this 12 months after this episode was filmed and I'm still having the issue regardless of where the water comes from. In Lagoon's defence they have been great with all other issues to date but the most important consideration is the lack of issues that we have had. We've been very lucky compared to many other yacht manufacturers we know. Thanks for following our adventure, we make these vids for you guys so please don't forget to leave us a comment and a thumbs up. Thanks for watching and continuing on our adventure with us. We know it isn't easy with such irregular uploads but your support is very much appreciated. This episode starts on Saint Martin and we end up on Anguilla, so really we visited The Netherlands, France and the UK all in a couple of days. It's really interesting to see the difference in the European colonies and how each country still has an influence after Hurricane Irma. The people on Dutch St Martin especially are among the kindest and friendliest we've met in the Caribbean so far and despite the devastation couldn't be more positive and upbeat. It's only a short sail (but a fast one) to Anguilla and once there, Road Bay offers the most shelter from the trade winds and an interesting ship wreck of an old tanker at the south end of the beach. You can easily drive around the whole island in a day and as usual, us and the Aussies decided to try a beer in every bar. Please leave a comment as we love to hear from you, especially you guys that have followed us from the start. Thanks to SoundCloud for the tunes.
In this instalment of the Daley Adventure we spend a whole week in St Barts, enjoying the French cuisine and the local hospitality. Also because we get stuck in some nasty 40kt weather. We crossed the Atlantic Ocean with AquaFrolic which is a Lagoon 450F. The same as our boat but the F model so we've done many miles with the guys. They've basically become our Australian family and as I type this we're all drinking beers together in Miami almost a year later. Please tune in next week when the adventure continues in St Martin. Hey guys, we're back after an incredible break for us but our videos will continue right where we left off... Which is in Antigua. We spent an amazing week anchored off Jacky O's restaurant with mostly the beach to ourselves and then partied with our Ozy friends in English Harbour. Shirley Heights is the perfect place to watch the sunset but get there early to get a good spot and you MUST try the ribs, they're to die for! Upon leaving Antigua Dave decided to see if he could race some other boats into St Barts in our 20 tonne cruising catamaran and to be fair he didn't do too bad but most likely, the other participants in the race had no idea he was racing them ;) We'll do our best to post more regular videos from now on.... hopefully ;) FYI, this video is January 2018. Love Hayley, Dave and baby Ayla.
Hi Guys, we wanted to get online and update everyone with what's been going on for the last few months as we've not posted a video in a while and to give you guys an opportunity to get online and ask us some questions that may be helpful to get you going on your adventure, whatever it may be. We've never done a live chat before but it was really nice to hear from so many of you and be able to actually "chat" with those of you that have followed us for so long. It was great chatting with you guys and hope we were able to help in some way. Fair winds.
