Yess we are doing a GIVEAWAY!! Win a full week on board of Messenger for 2 persons. check the details in/under Vlog 25 In Today's vlog our chinese friends are leaving to Djibouti! It's kind of sad because we just found out we really liked hanging out together... On the 17th of April 2020 we will leave marina Port Ghalib in Egypt, heading south towards Sudan and Djibouti and finally Maldives. We will take it easy, enjoy the beautiful reefs of the red sea and keep an eye on the corona regulations of the ports we pass. Since many countries are closed we don't know where we will be allowed to go on land again, but we can survive 4 month without seeing anybody :) This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. We got the sailing- skills on our friends yacht 'Shalom' when we joined them on a trip from the Netherlands to Spain. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtDOpi7ydzdcRK1H7fEiQFQ . In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months. After missing a week of film, and a flurry of confusion around termites, WE ARE BACK ON TRACK! No, our boat is not destroyed, but we did cut some big holes in her to replace damaged areas. To date, we have patched 16/17 holes (just cut out our last one !!), have sanded more than 75% of the paint off, named our boat, and planned out the remaining work to accomplish while on the hard! While most of the work we've been doing has been covered, we try to focus on some of the other areas of interest this week. After months of contemplating names, we finally chose to rename Mahi Mahi to Black Pearl and to rename our channel "Sailing Black Pearl". Part of the time we would have spend editing video went towards designing a new logo for our channel. There are few comments about the logo, but the backstories and symbolism will be explained next week on our "Meet the Crew" episode! Other topics include the follow up on the Flour / Epoxy Peanut Butter mix, talk about our paint plans, and a progress shot of the boat. Patrons!! Our page address has now changed to: https://www.patreon.com/SailingBlackPearl

Vela Boatworks splashed the 368 Hull #1 in February 2020. She was outfitted with Twin 400 Verados and topped out at 62.5mph. The props used were 21 Pitch, and we never got the full RPM range. We were short by about 800 RPM. The next time we splash her, she'll have 19 Pitch props on and we expect to go even faster. Center Consoles Only (Instagram Influencer) did us a huge favor by editing the drone videos that were shot on the day we splashed her. https://www.instagram.com/centerconsolesonly/ Hope you enjoy this video as much as we do. https://velaboatworks.com/

This is one of the best anchorages in Cape Verde. But a good anchorage is only as good as your anchoring, so I go down and check. As well I check out Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The location of the anchorage. One of the most significant places of history in Africa. Where pirates wreaked havoc and pillaged long before doing so in the Caribbean. Where the dark ages of African colonialism began. Where battles were fought between colonial powers and pirates and resulted in what is said to be eighty sunken ships in the deeper waters of the bay. Cidade Velha is a fascinating historic location and a calm protected anchorage. If you ever get the chance to sail to Cidade Velha, you'll be anchored in history then and now. We get a fishing pot wrapped around our rudder in the Irish Sea....and Matt has to get in frigid waters to free us! In this week's episode we travel from Bangor, Northern Ireland, to Dublin. Along the way, we wrap a fishing pot around our rudder, and Matt has to get in frigid waters to free us. Thankfully it was just a few quick dunks in the Irish Sea and we're on our way again. In the Dublin area, we use one of our days to tour the Guinness Storehouse, amazed at how well everything is laid out. We even get the VIP treatment with two round of beer at the end of our tour...and even get our portraits sprayed on the second round with malted barley. Wrapping things up we take a walk about Dún Laoghaire, where the boat is, and its famous 40 Foot Hole; as well as the historical town of Dalkey, and the castles which used to serve as storage for unloading cargo in the harbour of Dublin. This was another episode I had so much fun reliving while I edited, and we hope you enjoy it as well! Enjoy! Much love from Scotland! After a long 9 day sail from Honduras to Colombia we finally arrived in Cartagena and now the repairs are in order. While docked at the marina we take advantage of the stillness and get to work right away on the boat. She was in need of some much needed attention. Right away, we cleaned her up from all the salt water splashing and then got into more than we hoped. After discovering the was watering entering the bilge, I had to clean out the hull that was full of saltwater and sand with all our perishables. Warren was straight to work with repairs to the rolling furler and remaking a washer spacer that broke off. In addition to some repairs, we needed to replace some line that were fringing. After all the repairs and cleaning which included the smashed finger from a hatch closing, we had just enough time to rest up before our friends Lou and Steven on the Wolfhound arrived from Jamaica, followed closely by some longtime family friends who had flown in last minute to celebrate the New Year with us in the lively city of Cartagena. Thanks for watching the Adventures of WE!

Meet our newest member and see what has been keeping us busy for the last 8 months! We couldn’t possibly portray the utter heart ache and disappointment we have experienced over the last 3 months with this Bimini. Our work on this bimini started in July 2019 while we were still working on it at the previous owners home. It was then transported to club Mykonos when we put Saoirse in the water, we had great intentions of getting her finished ASAP. With great difficulty and lots of back and forth between different companies and people we decided to hand the work over to a local guy in Langebaan. OUR BIGGEST MISTAKE. We needed the Bimini to be fared and painted before we could put it up. It took a lot of sanding to get the fiberglass as even as possible and as smooth as possible after that we went on to employ “Patrick” at the end of November/beginning of December he promised the work could be done and he was fully able to complete it with great results - he needed a deposit to secure his work and then he would start the following week, the day after he was handed his deposit he disappeared ( he had been working on a boat in the boat yard for weeks before ) into thin air. He wouldn’t answer his phone or reply to messages, after a month of trying we thought it was time to give up on the guy. Suddenly he appeared at the end of December promising that he was starting the work the first week of January, we geared up for him and had all the supplies couriered to us from Cape Town only to be let down AGAIN. Patrick disappeared, again taking no calls or replying to messages. By this time we were fed up and Karen messaged him and said she’s had enough of his promises and she would be finding someone else to do the work - to this he quickly called back and promised he would get back to work he was just unwell. EVENTUALLY he pitched up in the middle of February and said he could get the job done - he sprayed the paint on so thick that it got orange peel and he ran out of paint so there was more money having to be plowed into the job. He then completed the job in 4 days and presented us with possibly the worlds worst fairing and paint job imagined to mankind. Disheartened and ready to throw in the towel on the entire Bimini at this stage he came back to us and told us that he could fix it but would need to be paid even more on top of what he had been paid to complete the job. To that we said goodbye to Patrick and tackled the Bimini as a family - it couldn’t possibly get worse that what it was. With lots of attention to detail and having to dish out more money for more paint and fairing materials we got to this final product. We couldn’t have asked for a better job if we do say so ourselves! It did take us 3 weeks with Colben and Karen working on it almost full time and Robin and Teagan helping between their own projects and eventually the help of Denver when he arrived. We did it, we finally did it! There were tears (when we say tears we mean torrential downpour kind of tears) sweat and some blood. We then had to wait a whole week for some good weather so we could hoist the Bimini up and put her on! Join us in our next episode to see what she looks like on Saoirse.

This video tour of 'Hermione', a Jeanneau Sun 2000 trailer yacht which came out of our workshop in 2020, was originally intended as a sales film. It's been so popular that we've left it up even though we have sold Hermione some time ago. Dating from 2007, ‘Hermione’ has been very lightly used, not at all during the last four years, and it shows! Her hull and topsides are immaculate and her deck, cockpit and cabin shine. Hermione comes fitted out in the ‘Comfort’ version of the Sun 2000 with vinyl cream cabin cushions, sink with fresh water supply and a single burner stove . Further extras include a ‘pack a bag’ style lazy jack system, a stainless steel mast raising system, stainless steel mast support bar for stowage and towing, Navman wind direction instrument, as well as Navman chartplotter and VHF/DSC radio and a chemical toilet. She was finished with the following improvements: Brand new Peterson stainless steel standing rigging New running rigging where necessary A professionally serviced 1800kg capacity trailer with new tyres (2019) and bearings A professionally serviced 4HP 4 stroke Mariner outboard with 20l external tank Freshly laundered Quantum sails A laundered and re-waterproofed ‘pack a bag’ main sail cover Newly stripped and varnished external wood fittings A sanded hull with new antifoul, including the keel Machine polished topsides As a final job we added a brand new NASA Duet Log and Depth display with transducers. Live video tours of boats like Hermione can be arranged so please get in touch with us through our website: BoatsonWheels.com
