Our first narrowboat cruise of 2020. Since the canal and river trust updated their guidelines we were allowed to go on a day cruise as long as we returned to our home mooring. We travelled along the Trent and Mersey Canal from Stone to Burston. We have great weather and thoroughly enjoyed it, we hope you do too. We’re Stephen and Kayleigh an English/ Scottish couple and along with our two dogs Hugo and Coco we will full time on board our 37ft narrowboat Grayswood. After living nearly two years in our self-converted campervan we decided we needed more space. So, as a compromise (Ste wanted a boat, I was happy in the van) we decided we would purchase a boat after spending some time on our friend’s narrowboat. Grayswood was conveniently located less that 5 minutes from my work and was found kind of by accident. I was visiting a friend who was staying in Aston Marina and whilst we were out walking the dogs, I seen the advert for Grayswood. I said to my friend “that looks a nice boat” and as I said it the marina manager appeared and asked if we would like a look inside. Naturally we did. After looking inside, the boat I texted Ste and told him I’d found us a boat. We made an offer after going back for a second viewing, after some negotiations within a week she was ours pending a survey. She was hauled out the following week and the survey went well. We kept her out on the hard standing for a further six weeks whilst we renovated the insides including fitting a new kitchen and bathroom. After we dropped our rudder in the last episode, Mario starts to repair it. We make a few holes in it to let the water drip out just to find out the damage is not as bad as we thougt. The foam is a little bit wet, but not as bad as it could be. But it wells way better to know that all is fine if we start to cross the Pacific soon. After trailering Soulianis out of our landlocked boatyard, she’s now poised and ready for launch — right after we finish painting the centerboard with bottom paint. The launch goes well at first. No leaks, and the motor runs. One problem: forward gear doesn’t have much oomph, and reverse doesn’t work at all. So, about that feathering prop we rebuilt… we’ve got some troubleshooting to do. When we ended up n the reef back in Febuary, it was the worst experience of our lives. We were so close to losing everything, but luckily some how we managed to save our home and got her back to the boat yard. There is nothing like therapy with a grinder to rectify the situation and after days on end of grinding we now have 2 massive holes in the side of Nandji. Bonita convinced me that it best to get the professionals to do the re-planking of the hull and I agree. This means I can move onto the next project of building the rudder. I have never built a sailboat rudder before but felt confident my skills were up for the task. I dissected the original rudder to learn of the design and thought I shall copy the construction, with a few adjustments. This is part one of the rudder build as we source the materials to use in Thailand and then begin the construction. We get a new rudder staff made and then begin the epoxy gluing of the structure to shape. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off from Australia sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! We were on our shake down sail when the mooring we were on failed on our home ended up on the reef. We saved the old girl and got her back to the boat yard for repairs to continue on our adventure! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm offshore. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! SEASON 6 / The Haul Out : Episode #133 : FINALE: The Passage Home Hello Friends! The Season Finale is FINALLY here!!! After 5 weeks on the hard we were finally able to take Triteia home ! The promised winds never arrived so we slept through the night after Camille's best friend Andre arrived in from NYC to join us for the sail home and to spend Christmas with us. Aeolus and Eos decided we should motorsail home and brought us light Southerlies at dawn. On the California Coast Northerly winds are dominate and blow with trade wind regularity. I had always thought that my reward for being north would be a lovely sail home down the coast. But when you are sailing with a timeframe you have to take what you get. We had a lovely passage home and I was amazed that the boat now has ZERO prop walk!!! This was due to the new propeller. The old propeller having a chip out of it was off balance and if you let go of the tiller when you were under motor you would drive in a circle, I had always thought this was a byproduct of a full keel boat and was pleasantly shocked that now when you let go of the tiller you stray only slightly. Andre was greeted by his first time seeing dolphins on the bow and I am so happy we captured it on video. There is nothing more amazing than the first time you see them up close playing. We had a very calm and mellow passage home with a unreal sunset and a wild dolphin bioluminescent show after dark. The kite surfing scene in New Caledonia is world class, in fact the French love anything on water that uses wind power, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing, they do it all. We got amongst the local scene in the tourist area Anse Vata in Noumea. Kris had a blast out there, while Bella continued to improve her skills and gets up on the board for the second time. We encounter issues with our shaft that fills our boat with water up to the bottom of the engine. A little nerve wracking at first when you don't know where the water is coming from and our automatic bilge pump didn't kick on. Luckily we turned on our big boy pump and got the water out quickly to find it was leaking in through our shaft seal. We go over what we did to fix our shaft without hauling out and being able to continue our trip. We also enjoyed one of our favorite sandy beaches in the PNW!
