We sail from Guadalcanal to explore the Russell Islands. Our first stop is Lolaghan Island where we did a good samaritan deed. We then ventured further north to dive a deep pinnacle in the middle of the ocean, before heading north to a private island.

We got permission to sail! It was an administrative adventure with Maritime Police and Port Authority. First because of the pandemic and restrictions being slowly lifted and second Cape Verdean nationals need special permission from the port authority to travel on a vessel with a foreign flag. But in the end we got permission to sail captain. It was the first time for a group of friends to discover their island by sea. I was accompanied by Peixe, Jodie, Lily, Marizia, Fanie and Wendy. We went to one of our favourite anchorages on the island of Sao Vicente. We swam, ate, drank and danced. The next day Peixe took us to a seclude black sand beach. Then we made our way back to our anchorage for the night, rested so we could continue our adventures at another beach with natural pools. Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! In this video we go through our decision making process in finding a boat for cruising and what we've learned in the three years we've been living aboard. What layout is best, what sail plan should you go for and what extras should you fit for long term cruising? We try to answer these questions and also point out some things that are best avoided. There is no such thing as the perfect cruising boat, but in order to have as good an experience as possible and stay safe it's good to get as close to perfect as possible. We think we've found what's right for us. WE transit the Panama Canal on our friends custom built sailboat for the first time ever. For many cruisers, a transit of the Panama Canal is a milestone accomplishment. The canal itself is an engineering wonder of the world and it was a very impressive experience for all of us. We arrived to Shelter Bay Marina on the Atlantic side awaiting the approval of canal authorities to transit the canal. Our friends on SV Wolfhound, Lou & Steven had an eager and green crew to help cross through the locks, but we all handled it like pros. This was a incredible experience for everyone on board and we were thrilled to have the oppertunityto cross not just once but twice. The following week we all were to come back and help go through again but this time with our own boat. So needless to say, was a great trial run for us! ❗️WE WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE HERE FOR WINTER❗️ In this episode we weather our first Western Cape storm! We had fair warning of the storm and there was quite some hype and buzz around it being the first big one of the season. As per usual, you build up this big dramatic scene in your head and when it eventually comes time it feels a lot smaller than you anticipated. It was still big but not as big as our imagination led us to believe! We aren’t complaining or anything but with us being on day 61 of lock down we were eager for some action! To prepare for the storm we got some PVC canvas from Tony Boock from Boock Signs, (the awesome guy that did the printing on our sails!) once again coming to our rescue! Karen tried her best to sew up a dodger in time for the storm but working with the PVC was tricky, it slid around the sewing machine (because of its plastic finish) which made sewing it very difficult. Karen thinks that with a walking foot it might be better but with lockdown we had no way of buying one, so we made do with what we had. We had issues with water getting in through holes made for our grab bar on our sugar scoop so Colben promptly sika’d that down, showed us how to clean off sika a little easier and demonstrated what he will be using the grab bar for!! Our LOVE for animals and our need to feed all the animals we lay eyes on has given us a lot of work in the evenings! Denver and Colben often go fishing for fish to feed the feral cats that live around the marina, Denver then cuts up the fish and distributes them between +-6 adult cats and 3 kittens. With it being winter we can’t stand the thought of any of them going to bed hungry. Mykonos has a feral feeding scheme and we have been told that there are about 30 cats around Mykonos itself that they feed. Karen's long term goal is to start a non profit that would contribute to the spaying and neutering of cats and dogs on islands that we visit. We believe that the less unwanted animals running around, contributes to a lot less animal neglect and abuse. Animals are a huge part of our lives and Karen has been part of animal rescue and rehabilitation for the last 30 years.
