Thanks for being here on this adventure. In this episode, Barrett and I take on a new project. We call this place 'CAMP'...our new home. There are many activities at CAMP & it will be a process. But in the end, this house on a small hill will have totally morphed into our dream home. We plan to do 90% of the work ourselves, over time. Thanks for joining us. You will get little slices of the progress mingled in with our other adventurous videos. Barrett and I take the Javelina out to the Pinyons of Anza Borrego State Park. We camp off the S-2, in about 4000 feet of elevation. We took Pinyon Mountain Road from S-2 and headed east. It was perfect for a warm, late spring weekend. This trail ultimately leads to Pinyon Drop. An unfortunate mistake of forgetting my motorcycle key leads to me learning how to hot-wire my bike!! A good learning experience. Thanks for riding with us. The Overland Truck: 1996 Ford F250, 4X4 Diesel, 7.3 liter Power Stroke, 4" lift, 17" wheels with 33" 12.50s, "The BAT" "JAVELINA". Barrett and I take the Javelina out to explore a new (to us) campsite in Anza Borrego State Park. We camp south of the 78, east of Julian. We took Pinyon Wash from the highway and kept going till giant boulders stopped us in our tracks. The end of this wash was the start of Pinyon Canyon, and a great hike up over the hill. We were lucky to have been out during a very full moon and were amazed by the moonlight shining on this cool canyon. We also ride our dual sports through Nolina Wash and hop over the 78 to explore Old Borrego Valley Road. Watch to the end to see me ride the Javelina! Take a ride with me to El Capitan Reservoir in east county San Diego. This is a beautiful, remote lake. It was my first time here, and I thought I would make a full day's adventure out of it. Luckily, I have a good break-down rod, a 2-piece Okuna spinning reel which was perfect for the journey. I have 10 lb test mono loaded on this rig, and I used a 4 1/2" Roboworm with a pencil drop shot rig set about 18" down from the hook. I also tried an underspin swim bait and a small bass plastic lure. I parked my bike, the Husqvarna FE350, and hiked around, fishing several locations for a few hours. Unfortunately, I had no bites, but what a fun time!! I would absolutely do this again, maybe with a few different rigs and bait options...and can't wait to try my kayak out here at El Capitan. Barrett and I have been eager to get on the North side of Anza Borrego State Park. There is so much to see! We only touched the surface on this trip. We camp off of San Felipe Wash, taking the 78, to Buttes Pass Road, then bypassing The Slot and Hawk Canyon. We were only about 3 miles from the Ocotillo Wells SVRA. During our rides we crossed over multiple times and enjoyed the best of both worlds on our dual sport bikes - the Husqvarna WR300 and Husqvarna FE350. Join us for a weekend of truck & moto exploration of Anza Borrego - North side. You will see: Cut Across Trail, Arroyo Salado, Tule Wash, Ella Wash, Shell Reef Expressway, Font's Point, Vista Del Malpais and more! What's more fun than camping in the desert? Sharing the Experience. My sister, Jenny, brings my niece and nephew, Ava & Armon, from Houston to San Diego and we explore Ocotillo together. We take them on a wild ride of 4x4'ing, cooking in a dutch oven, riding dirt bikes and hiking through Anza Borrego's famous canyons. Starry nights and brilliant sunrises in the company of family. What more could we ask for? Ava and Armon took a very participatory role in this video, helping me film and narrate the video. Thank you both! Ava and Armon shot the drone footage and various other perspectives, and they did it very well! We take you on a journey into Mission Bay where we see our first 'Sabot Regatta' at Mission Bay Yacht Club. Watch these magical sabots go for a whirl. We were so inspired by the sabots we decided to take some spins around Mariner's Basin and Bonita Cove to dust the dirt off Spartina's sails. Feast your eyes on this!! We interrupt the sailing and overland adventures for another special episode of Barrett's 'West Meets South.' Thanks for coming over today and seeing Barrett in action. He's quite the chef and has a keen sense for delicious food, tasty ingredients and creative combos. Whether he's cooking in cast iron or on the pit of the offset smoker, his food has a West meets South flare. Today, he gets the smoker goin' to smoke up some surf & turf?a tri tip alongside salmon filets. It's about a 14-15 hour process, overnight, to dry brine the salmon. Then we season the tri tip and smoke them together. What a delicious treat. Please join us and let us know how you do your surf & turf!!?? Thanks for watching. In this episode Barrett and I escape to Painted Gorge. This is really a fun place to ride and camp. And, there are plenty of fun spots to pull away and camp to escape the everyday life. Painted Gorge is pretty easy to find, and access is easy from the Ocotillo, CA exit. Just follow the frontage road to the north of the 8 and then head east. You will soon get to Painted Gorge Road, where you will turn North. The land opens up past the small town. As you will see, some areas (the mountain trail) is closed January 1 - June 30, for the bighorn sheep lambing season. But, there are still plenty of other areas and hills to ride if you go out during this time of year. You just won't have access to the high trails. PLEASE, if you go out here, please leave room and bring a few extra trash bags to haul out some of the trash which has sadly been left behind. This place is rad, but soon to be destroyed by people's laziness and disrespect, unfortunately. Barrett and I show you more of the build-out for our F250 4x4 truck. We clean and prep the chassis for paint, freeing up some of the old rust. Then we take a road trip up to central California to pick up an aluminum flatbed tray with a canopy box. Tyler from US Overland Canopies constructed this flatbed and canopy box (with the addition of 2 purchased underbody toolboxes) and ran it on his truck for a while. He was looking to sell it so he could make version 2. What a find, because version 1 was just what we were looking for! See the early stages of this truck build and how the flatbed tray works for us. Part 3 will come a little later, as we build out shelving over the next few months, work on an auxiliary battery system, add side steps and dial in this expedition rig. Flatbed tray with canopy box: Tyler from US Overland Canopies, located in central California. Check him on Instagram @us_overland_canopies Backup Camera from Tadi Brothers **I am not sponsored, just a customer! https://www.tadibrothers.com/products/36-pop-up-monitor-and-120-mounted-rv-backup-camera-rv-backup-system * I also ordered the 25ft RCA back up cable to accommodate our truck. This is a wired version. They also sell wireless kits, but that just wasn't what we wanted. Slim water tank: https://ironman4x4america.com/40l-vertical-water-tank-10-6-gal/ For install: use 2 straps to secure the tank to the frame of our truck, utilizing the tank 'holes'. Insert some packing foam pieces between tank and bed of truck/cab of truck - to keep the tank secure and not rocking/wiggling forward or backward. Attach reinforced tubing with a hose clamp at tank barbed outlet (it comes with the barbed outlet), attach valve and hose clamp at 'open' end of tubing. When in use at camp, we just loosen the fill cap on the tank and the water comes out steadily as gravity fed. -------------- The Sailboat: 1984 Cheoy Lee, 36' Pedrick monohull sailboat, "Spartina" The Overland Truck: 1996 Ford F250, 4X4 Diesel, 7.3 liter Power Stroke, 4" lift, 17" wheels with 33" 12.50s, "The BAT" "JAVELINA" The Bikes: Barrett: 2011 Husqvarna WR300 & 2010 Triumph Scrambler Meme: 2002 Yamaha 125, 2017 Husqvarna FE350 Video: Filmed by Meme and Barrett, edited in Final Cut Pro X by Meme Merch: Coming soon???!!! Barrett and I show you the start of the build-out for our F250 4x4 truck. We start with removing the factory bed, including the bumper, running boards and electrical wiring. Next step was to get the truck to the paint shop. I lay it all out with our theory behind the build-out and why we chose a flatbed over a traditional camper. There are not many OBS (original body style) F250 overland builds, so we are pretty excited to have a 'different' truck than what you typically see out there. AND it was an inexpensive, capable rig from the get go. This allowed us to put some money into the modifications to make it what we needed on our adventure runs. We head out to Anza Borrego State Park with some friends to camp and ride dirtbikes. We camp along the S2, about 18 miles from the north side of Highway 8. Our friends have a large 2WD Mercedes Sprinter van loaded down with dirtbikes, mountain bikes and camp gear. This spot was very accessible for a heavy van with 2WD. We took South Carrizo Road to the northeast side of S2 for about 1/2 mile and set up camp. Very easy. We rode our dirtbikes through an array of washes: Carrizo Wash, Vallecito Wash, Arroyo Tapiado, Mesa, Diablo Drop, Fish Creek Wash, Arroyo Del Seco and Indian Gorge Road to a natural palm spring in the desert! We borrowed a friend's Toyota Tacoma while our 1996 F250 Powerstroke is getting an Expedition Updo! The Tacoma has an awesome Flip Pac tent set-up and I show you how easy it is to set up. In my opinion, the Flip Pac (hard top tent style) is easier and faster to set-up than our Tepui rooftop tent. But both are great to sleep and 'live' in. Where to next??? Can't wait to share our F250 expedition updo. My friend Emmi joins me again and we go clam digging for Pismo Clams off Coronado Island in San Diego, CA. It's only a short drive to get to Coronado Beach, just on the other side of San Diego Bay. It takes some time to find the clams in the sand and requires patience, but we came out with a few legal ones, at 4 1/2". Watch and learn as I explain how to find the clams. We then show you how we bake them up into a feast. In this episode we spend the weekend on the outskirts of the eastern edge of the Anza Borrego State Park, on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land in Southern California. Here, we can ride our 2-strokes, shoot guns and get dirty in the fresh, open, warm desert air. We camp in our 1996 Ford F250 4x4 truck, with a Tepui Tent. A multi-day excursion-staycation in Mission Bay, San Diego. I launch the F/V Sabine, a Hobie Compass 12.5 foot fishing kayak from S/V Spartina, our sailboat anchored up in Mariner's Cove. Ended up hooking up on a variety of fishes from the bay, the jetties and the basin. Overall a fun few days with great weather and water conditions. Barrett and I escape to the Dirt of the East. It's the first dirtbike - overland - trip of the season. We start it off by heading to a windy spot near Ocotillo, in the rocky desert, east of San Diego. It's a remote dirt bike, overland, camp spot and we enjoy some good trails (Mortrero Wash and Carrizo Wash) and solitude. The truck does well, as do the Husqvarna FE350 and the Husqvarna 300WR?it's easy to reflect on the similarities between boat life and truck life. What would you prefer?Dirt or Sea?? We spy on another (*3rd) Mako shark outside Mission Jetty and make our way north to the La Jolla kelp beds. Today I take the Hobie Compass Kayak, "F/V Sabine", down to National City and launch into Sweetwater Channel. I paddle across South Bay to Coronado Cays and Loews to throw some swim baits. I also fish at the commercial ship docks and ultimately find several good tugs revealing some good fishing in South Bay! See what I catch today.
