After a cracking Summer, Autumn is here, and its arrived with either light winds or strong winds. So this week has seen plenty of sailing, swimming and walking - with family and old friends. There`s been birthdays, scrambling and wild swimming. Plus dropping anchor and swimming from the boat.

Today's vlog: So far we did not really do snorkeling or freediving in Djibouti. But we met with Moussa, one of the rare freedivers of Djibouti, and he loves it! We explore the under water world of Djibouti together at Ras Ali and Sable Blanc. Yess we are doing a GIVEAWAY!! Win a full week on board of Messenger for 2 persons. check the details in/under DailyVlog 25 This journey is only a small part of our trip that started 2 years ago. We got the sailing- skills on our friends yacht 'Shalom' when we joined them on a trip from the Netherlands to Spain. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtDOpi7ydzdcRK1H7fEiQFQ . In Spain we decided to go with our own boat, and in no time we were the happy owners of 'Messenger'. We left may 2018 and started vlogging from the beginning, we made 15 minute video's of our adventures, the nature and the many special people we met. We cooperated with OM to visit their projects and film them on our way. Since 19 of March we started with a daily vlog due to the corona situation. We plan to keep doing this the coming months. How to save hundreds of dollars and protect your boat. It's the end of the season, and this is one thing you should do now before storing your boat. We will never monetize this, so there will never be ads, but we sure appreciate the more than 300 subscribers! Hope we are educating as much as entertaining. Fall foliage shots by Brennan Murdock. Hear Peter Harken tell the tale of how a single detail (the bounce of a plastic ball) launched an entire company. This detail made all the difference. Less mass. Faster acceleration. If you listen to Peter Harken recount the moment he realized the Delrin® ball bearings he spilled on the floor while assembling a prototype he’d designed working at a medical equipment company during his university career, he’ll tell you that when he saw those balls hit the pavement and bounce he was surprised at how quickly they reacted. They appeared to spring off the floor. To him that meant they would react equally quickly inside the sheaves of the first Harken ball-bearing blocks. Peter’s watershed understanding was that to make a responsive block the sheaves needed to be quick. They needed to start moving quickly, with even small amounts of force exerted. In fact, Harken designed his blocks to make it easier to ease sails in the lightest breeze. Accounts of the earliest users of the original Harken blocks all remark on how easily the sails eased: "Beware of the black blocks with the white balls. If you don't duck immediately, the boom's gonna knock your head right off."
Over the years, there were plenty of times we thought our detailed thinking was going to result in breakthrough products the public was going to love. Sometimes we were very wrong! We were thinking a generation too far ahead and the present public didn't care--and didn't buy. So a 'dream' was designed, built, and it worked but swiftly died. Yeah, let’s go with that!

Just me and some mates out on the weekend. Modded RXTx 260 and spark trixx jumping some waves. I didn't get much on film as I forgot to bring my GoPro mounts so I only filmed my mates on their skis.

When we just started out we trained a lot on lake Neusiedl near Austrias capital Vienna. The lake is quite big but only two meters deep. For my American friends, that's 6,5ft and that's just deep enough to sail but not by much. We often "found" something on the bottom, caught a fish or at least dragged an entire underwater jungle of seagrass behind us. The shallow water means that there are barley any waves, or as Misha Heemskerk would say: "Surfing is a different sport." This means two things, the boat gets very fast and the gusts kick like a mule. In this video you can see us at a level where we figured out the basics but still struggled with bearing away and standing position downwind. Anyway a week previous we won the biggest regatta in Austria the Hyundai Roundabout where we have beaten over 170 teams in absolute time. The key how we eventually left these issues behind us was good communication. We talked about literally everything. The moment you stop learning ist the day you stop sailing or so... We thought long and hard about whether we should publish this episode. The last few days have been an emotional rollercoaster. For the sake of transparency we figured you guys should see that the sailing life isn’t always palm trees and pina coladas… Sailing Spain’s Balearic Islands certainly has its ups and downs. Watch as we leave Ibiza bound for the largest island in the archipelago - Mallorca. While Ibiza gave us an opportunity to slow down and really enjoy the fruits of this lifestyle Mallorca had other plans for us! NOW I get back to FITTING the Cabin 2 berth frame and panels, of course there is PLENTY of pre-work to be done,... BUT, Ooowww Yes, the HARD and CAREFUL WORK making these DEFINITELY pays off! 😁 I also get the Cabin 3 berth supports fitted and add some missed insertion rubber to the diesel tank bracket! There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,... However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,... What do you eat when you live on a boat, but you are terrible at fishing? In this episode we share a bunch of recipes we make onboard. We cook Veggie Tikka Masala, make Spring Rolls, whip up Brunch Bowls, and throw together what we call the Snack Plate — a cutting board full of fresh fruit, raw veggies, nuts, cheese, crackers, pita chips & hummus. Finger food from a single plate means minimal dishes. And when it’s hot, no one wants to cook. And the lack of fishing? We’re not morally against it, we just haven’t learned the ropes yet. We’d love to; it all takes time! Also in this video: We price comparison shop at the largest grocery store in the Abacos, the local kids almost commandeer our dinghy, we endure some scary lightning, and have a discussion about anchoring etiquette in tight quarters. After sailing from Mindelo with my friend Wendy, we met up with our other two friends in the little town of Tarrafal on the island of Santa Antao. There I took the three city girls to a big deserted black sand beach. We could swim and escape the sweltering heat. At the end of the day, we go and anchor in the bay at the town of Tarrafal. The girls were all to happy to have a few grogs and beers and turned up the volume in the local bar. And then we moved the party to Lola's house. Where I am always welcome. And there the party continued on her porch to her delight. She called out to her friends and relatives and it became a dance off. An unforgettable evening. In this episode we pass a catamaran while sailing offshore with our monohull, sail with Humpback Whales, and explore Provincetown and Nantucket off of Cape Cod. Time to head toward greener pastures. We leave Rockland, Maine in the late afternoon and set sail with our sights set on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. We left late due to some online work obligations and our weather window closed on us, so we diverted to Provincetown, Massachusetts. We had to run the gauntlet of lobster buoys in the dark. 1:28 Sailing in the Gulf of Maine The trip from Maine to Provincetown was all bluewater offshore sailing. We had NE winds in the 5-25 knot range the whole trip. Making for nice downwind sailing, although the waves did pick up the further south we drove into the Gulf of Maine. We dodged lobster buoys and fishing boats on our way south. 3:10 Crushing Catamarans We found a catamaran sailboat of the same size on AIS that we raced through the night and next day. They started ahead of us, and by the time we arrived in Provincetown they were just off our stern. It was a really great speed comparison of a cruising catamaran vs a cruising monohull. I am sure neither of us was racing hard, I think we both had either reefed mainsail or headsails only a multiple points, but it still gives a great idea of how catamarans and monohulls compare in the same conditions. We were surprised that our monohull was faster than the production catamaran off the wind, reaching and downwind. 7:23 Arrive in Provincetown We arrived in Provincetown, to meet some new friends due to anchoring too close to them. They were super nice about our mistake, and SV Sargo has become great friends which we see again in the Caribbean. We eat pizza, tour the town, and take a bike ride out to Race Point Beach. 10:34 Old Harbor Life-Saving Station There we tried to explore the rescue museum, but we arrived just a few minutes to late, as it was closed. We met the rangers leaving on the path as we walked there. They were great and explained some of the history. It was amazing how the pre-curser to our coast guard saved lives. The risks they took to save troubled mariners were incredible, and the gear they had to do it was rudimentary at best. We explore some of this in our video, but we want to thank our USCG members for their great service to our country and to all sailors. 13:45 Spinnaker Sailing off Cape Cod After leaving P-Town, we headed offshore around Cape Cod and the Cape Codd National Seashore to sail to Nantucket, Massachusetts. 15:38 Humpback Whales We saw Dolphins and Humpback whales along the way as we sailed under our A2 Runner Spinnaker, which we have named "Big Blue." (We have a white A3 Reacher / Gennaker Spinnaker in our sail inventory as well ;-) 17:01 Monomoy Shoals Sunset We sailed through Monomoy Shoals with no problem. It was well marked and charted, however, we didn't shortcut. We used the shipping channel. We arrive safely to Nantucket Harbor in the evening and anchor amongst its strong current. Our Rocna anchor held beautifully on a short scope of 3:1, despite the changing 2-3 knot current. 17:50 Tour Nantucket We walked the cobblestone roads and sidewalks of Nantucket as we tried to find New England's shortest lighthouse. 18:56 Brant Point Lighthouse Brant Point Lighthouse is a stubby little thing and highly photographed by visiting tourists. We added ourselves to that list. Later we went for a nature walk on the other side of the island, seeing the marsh, grass, and beautiful flowers. #sailing #monohullvscatamaran #sailinglife #travelvlog About Us: So who are we? Well, we aren't Sailing La Vagabonde, Sailing Doodles, Sailing Uma, Gone With the Wynns, or Sailing Delos. We don't have a fancy catamaran, but we do have a pretty spiffy and fast monohull sailboat that likes to eat cruising catamarans like the Fountaine Pajots, Leapords and Lagoons for lunch and leave them in the dust ;-) We are Kate and Curtis, a sailing couple, with our sailing dog Roxy, aboard SV Sweet Ruca. We used to be sailboat racers on the great lakes, and our goal is to cruise around the world via the capes (the wrong way or the hard way). We will see if this will happen or not, as the "new normal" has put quite a damper on our travels. For now, enjoy our videos and join us on our journey via our YouTube Channel. 'Till Next Time :-)

This 9ft dinghy has sailed over half way around the world. A tender that splits in half to save space on deck, has been the ideal dinghy for our circumnavigation. Having a tiny sail boat that we can use to explore the rivers and beaches of the countries we visit has been an absolute joy. In this video we will share the good and bad points of owning a wooden sailing rowing dinghy as a tender to our blue water cruising yacht Florence. Our 9ft spindrift nesting dinghy has generated a lot of questions in our previous videos so we hope to answer them all here. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean. WE still have winds that make it hard to sail, surprisingly there is actually a lot to do on a sailboat when its becalmed in the middle of the ocean! On this episode, we are a week into our sail up to Mexico and we have been becalmed for 4 of them. The weather outlook also shows little to no wind so we find ourselves just floating around in the middle of the Pacific. It’s honestly not at bad as most would think either. We swim in some of the clearest, deepest waters, enjoyed our daily visits from dolphins and turtles and this time some above water life that is unimaginable to consider living all the way out here with no land in sight. We sit back and enjoy the simplicity of calm and nothing. Find entertainment amongst each other as we forget about what day it is. Thanks for watching the Adventures of WE! We've rented a studio in the center of La Grande Motte to be close to the production of our Outremer 55 hull#4. Of course we go over as much as we can, but this week there were a lot of seminars in the yearly Outremer week as well.

We don’t care what anyone says, two or more boats heading in the same direction, towards the same destination are racing. It’s the unwritten law. Our friends on Moody Finn and Calle II know it and we know it. We may not have agreed to take part in a sailing contest, but we have all unwittingly or otherwise entered into an unofficial competition for our journey to Australia and we are losing. However, when we unleash the power of our big, hastily repaired, A symmetrical spinnaker, Miss Ribena on the fleet, (we also reveal how we set her up) the speed she commands helps us catch and pass our competitors. We take the lead, only to lose it again in an unfortunate turn of events that sees us go off coarse and stimulates us to express our frustration through the medium of song, as we murder our version of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. We also have a close encounter with a cargo ship, dodge an upturned catamaran and Rob revels in the fact that Rachel has stolen the children’s childhood by ‘doing a Dad!’. Music Luna Keller – I don’t know where I’m going Olympus – Epic and dramatic trailer music - copy right free By The Coast – I’ll get you home – Musicbed.com By The Coast – I’ll get you home instrumental – Musicbed.com Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody cover WHO ARE WE? In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill #NeverStopWanderingNeverStopWondering. #TheCruisingKiwis
