Patricia went back to school but now to take sailing classes and she learned how to sail. Before taking delivery of our new lagoon 46 we need to get ready. We will be sailing away from Les Sables de Olonnes in France into the med where we start our new adventure with the objective to sail around the world as couple. Patricia had always feared the ocean as she was brought up in a family in the southern rural part of Brazil where swimming and getting on the water was looked at as been very dangerous. So her parents did not allow her to get close to pools, rivers and so on, creating a fear in her mind. She is conquering her fears of been on the water. Bevor wir das Naturschutzgebiet auf Lastovo endgültig verlassen machen wir noch auf der kleinen Insel Mrcara halt. Dort leben nur 4 Menschen und betreiben eine kleine Konoba (Taverne). Grund genug für uns die Insel uns mal genauer anzuschauen. Auch hier finden wir wieder alte verlassene Bunker und Militärgebäude. Nach einem ausgelassenen Abend in der Robinson Crusoe artigen Konoba seglen wir weiter Richtung Süden. Auf unseren Weg nach Dubrovnik machen wir dann noch auf der Insel Sipan halt. Die Bucht Sipanska Luka ist sehr gut von den aufkommenden Jugowinden geschützt und wir entscheiden uns dort ein paar Tage zu bleiben. Wir haben es geahnt: Als am Abend in Bozburun eine Gulet ihren Anker quer durch das Feld der Ankerlieger legt, befürchten wir bereits, dass die Kette mindestens einen anderen Anker unter sich begräbt. Zum Glück ist es nicht unser. Dass sich Helfen statt Gaffen auszahlt, beweist der "gefangene" österreichische Kat-Kapitän, der sich mit einem Weingelage und einem Abendessen bei uns revanchiert. Denn wie sich herausstellt, hat er an diesem Tag Geburtstag. Held des Tages ist aber unser Freund Burkhard, der sich sofort seine Tauchflasche umschnallte, um dem Ankersalat auf den Grund zu gehen. We explore the coastlines from Sooke to Port Renfrew in George's 1981 Toyota pickup that he has had since high school and has been out of commission for the last 6 years until Spring of 2019. We added the wildernest camper top and its officially our adventure mobile for exploring land when we aren't sailing! This was our very first camping trip since we got her back on the road! Sailing ORIZON - Segeln im Mittelmeer... Unsere Lieblingsinsel Lefkas ist erreicht und wir machen gleich einen Stopp im Hafen Lefkas und bummeln durch die hübsche City. Es ist noch super warm und wir genießen die lauen Abende. Dann machen wir einige Tage in der Ormos Ambelakia bei Meganisi mit Landleine fest, dort ist baden, grillen und chillen angesagt. Die kurzen Strecken zwischen den Inseln sind genial und machen das Inselhopping einfach. Als wir bei Meganisi den Anker hochholen wollen streikt unsere Ankerwinsch und somit machen wir eine Planänderung. Es geht noch nicht nach Ithaka weiter sondern wieder nach Lefkas, diesmal in die Tranquilbay bei Nidri. Dort möchten wir ein neues Ankerrelais für die Winsch besorgen und einbauen. Die Ankerwinsch muss laufen, ohne die sind wir aufgeschmissen. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ We have reached our favorite island of Lefkas and we stop at the port of Lefkas and stroll through the pretty city. It's still super warm and we enjoy the mild evenings. Then we moor a few days in the Ormos Ambelakia near Meganisi, where swimming, barbecuing and chilling are the order of the day. The short distances between the islands are awesome and make island hopping easy. When we want to raise the anchor at Meganisi, our anchor winch goes on strike and so we change our plan. It doesn't go on to Ithaca yet, but to Lefkas again, this time to the Tranquil Bay near Nidri. There we would like to get and install a new anchor relay for the winch. We hit the water again with ScubaTech, based in Prickley Bay, Grenada. Today Mark from Sailing Catamaran MANA was with us as well. Both Kate and Mark were doing their final dives for their advanced certification. The MV Shakem sits in about 100 feet of water. She is 108 feet long. Sinking in 2001 off of St. George, Grenada, the cargo shop was carrying a heavy load of cement from Trinidad. She was rolling in heavy seas in rough weather, taking on water over the gunwales due to the amount of weight she was carrying. Visibility was not as good as our previous dives, but still was satisfactory for the overcast day we had. There was quite a bit of surface current but less at depth. We all had a great time out on this scuba dive and would encourage others to check out Grenada’s many ship wrecks. Evelin did a phenomenal job leading the dive, and Curtis’ precision boat driving put us right on the boat in the tricky current. Both of them are sailors as well. Man-made underwater structures strategically placed on the house reef of Kapalai Island, Malaysia, created an incredible artificial home for marine life. Scuba diving around Kapalai Island in Malaysia is magical! Though it's the little sibling to the more famous Mabul Island, it certainly can boast about it's underwater inhabitants. In February 2020, we were fortunate enough to have one full day diving on Kapalai and we absolutely LOVED it. Kapalai was an island above the water line over 200 years ago, but now is a sand bar. The island was eroded away over time and the only resort has figured out a way to prop up houses on stilts on the spit of sand that remains. The diving was truly outstanding here and we were shocked by the size and effectiveness of the man-made artificial reef on Kapalai House Reef; the animal life was astounding! It's well worth a visit and more days diving at Kapalai. We did get to see the mating ritual of 5 stonefish while at Kapalai and look forward to sharing that video footage separately!
