Join me on a comprehensive sailing lessen about the basics of how a sail works. I will teach you the theoretical knowledge of how to trim a sail and I will show you in a fun experiment why both sides of the sail are important. As a professional Nacra 17 sailor I know how important the sails on a sailboat are and if you understand how they work you can sail any kind of sailing boat. In this tutorial I will also cover tell tales. We bought a big sailing ship. One year ago, right before the pandemic hit mankind, we spend the winter in Vilamoura Portugal. One of the difficult things in the sailing business is to find training partners. Unfortunately most of our training partners quit their Nacra 17 campaign after a few month of trying. Probably Nacra 17 sailing is a long and stony road and only few are tough enough, only few are brave enough to dare to take that risk. And unfortunately, if you ask me, good training partners are the key to success in sailing. But sometimes we where lucky. It happened that 2016 olympic gold medalist Igor Mareni? also spend his winter training time in Vilamoura. Not to mention his two wold championship titles and 5! additional medals at world championships! All that lead to one of our greatest sailing experiences we ever had. We played out our strength, wich is our amazing upwind speed and we could built up our lead even if the maneuvers could have been better. A quick hoist and we were both on the downwind. Conditions where not easy but Igor managed to skim a bit better. So he was a little bit faster and could sail a better angle. We both missed the lower mark because training marks are way too small in choppy conditions. But racing on par is absolutely the most fun thing about sailing. For the fans of the unfiltered, mostly unedited and RAW sailing action here is Pure Sailing capsize edition. As always no music, no comments and no special effects, just pure sailing. The idea behind this series is that you can imagine how it feels to sail a boat like the Nacra 17. I mean how it really is! Capsizing is part of the game and usually no big deal. To be honest on catamarans it does not happen very often so I am happy that I can show you the best mishaps out of a decade of catamaran sailing. Well the best ones I bought on camera?. Enjoy and feel free to leave a like. When you sail a fast boat like the Nacra 17 things can go wrong very quickly and after almost a decade of sailing catamarans I can assure you things will go wrong. Especially when you are learning how to sail the boat in extreme conditions. Foiling is the edge of the sailing sport. But the edge between a state of flow and a crash is razor sharp. Most of the time it is very difficult to capture the speed on video but when you see the Nacra crashing into a wave, 30 knots to 0 in two Meters, you really can see the pure awesomeness of sailing. Well, is it dangerous? Of course it is! It's not like you are getting hurt every time you capsize, but there is not one single team in the fleet who hadn't had a big injury. Especially the foils down the rudders can be a bit nasty. But no sailors where hurt during the making of that video. And while flying around the boat getting some unusual views of the trim and all that stuff, I think to myself, what a wonderful world. Sailing is great! When we just started out we trained a lot on lake Neusiedl near Austrias capital Vienna. The lake is quite big but only two meters deep. For my American friends, that's 6,5ft and that's just deep enough to sail but not by much. We often "found" something on the bottom, caught a fish or at least dragged an entire underwater jungle of seagrass behind us. The shallow water means that there are barley any waves, or as Misha Heemskerk would say: "Surfing is a different sport." This means two things, the boat gets very fast and the gusts kick like a mule. In this video you can see us at a level where we figured out the basics but still struggled with bearing away and standing position downwind. Anyway a week previous we won the biggest regatta in Austria the Hyundai Roundabout where we have beaten over 170 teams in absolute time. The key how we eventually left these issues behind us was good communication. We talked about literally everything. The moment you stop learning ist the day you stop sailing or so... One of my first GoPro Clips back from 2015. My Grandfather bought me the then new GoPro Hero 3+ for skiing. Never used it for skiing but for some catamaran action. We had just finished one season in the Formula 18 class as we switched to the non foiling Nacra 17. It was pretty dang hard! Especially double trapezing downwind. Not the downwind itself but going out on the wire after a gybe was a big challenge back then. The biggest difference between the Formula 18 class and the Nacra 17 class is that the F18 class is mainly for amateurs and in the N17 there are only pros aiming for an olympic medal. The F18 class is somewhat more helpful and kind. You can ask other sailors how to sail the boat. In the N17 everybody just mind their own business. Not that the N17 sailors are unfriendly but it is their job to sail and to perform, not their hobby. So one of our biggest mistakes was that we did not book a coach to help us learning the lines on our new boat. No one told us to pull the daggerboards downwind to make it easier, no one told Daniel how to go out on the wire downwind. A coach makes it way easier to start in a new class. But figuring out how a new boat works at your own can gives you a deep understanding and it certainly helps you to understand where people who are just starting out might have some issues. As you can see in the videos we did have them ourselves and we figured out how to overcome them. One of the more difficult things when sailing the Nacra 17 is upwind foiling. As if foiling alone isn't difficult enough... Not only that it is difficult it is also very exhausting. The tricky bit about upwind foiling, well one of the things, is to actually make way to windward. Not just speeding around. We try to achieve this by heeling over to windward. The angled leeward daggerboard helps to reduce slipping sideways. Also you have some windward daggerboard in the water following the same purpose. If you are just foiling leveled or heeled over to leeward like on a normal upwind only the tips of the foils could prevent drift. Round two of the first race of the 2015 Formula 18 Worlds in Kiel. 100 Boats at the starting line and we found ourselves somewhere in the middle. Always loosing some boats upwind. We managed to gain quite a lot downwind. All ended in a big battle round the mark. The biggest impact on our upwind performance since then was to get the "head out of the boat". If you are always focusing on your telltales, watching the jib for the whole race you are only reacting. And reacting is too slow. If you are watching the water infront of the boat, looking for gusts and all that and spare some time to watch for other boats you start actual regatta sailing. For me this formula worked quite well: 50% watching the wind in front of the boat 40% looking around and see what's going on 10% looking at the boat, controlling the settings and look at the tale tales And always remember to communicate with your crew / helm. 00:00 Intro 00:30 Upwind 04:30 Tack 06:45 Bear away 09:35 Gybe 12:05 Gybe 12:35 kite drop 12:50 Outro All PURE Sailing TBT Videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKMQLLS7F28&list=PLK_tHYFtt8SwKC6gFc-OF40osgZp2o2gL Equipment Used (Affiliate link): Go Pro 7: https://amzn.to/3b7rYUb ? Another great thing about lake Garda and especially Torbole is that you can choose which wind and wave conditions you want to train in. At a typical afternoon you have about 16 to 22 knots of wind near Torbole and Riva and the wind loses about half it's strength when you are half the way up to Malcesine. It is kind of the opposite direction in the morning. There are some "secret" spots where you have that extra portion wind strength. In front of Piers Windsurf Hotel is the most famous one. Sometimes this leads to a difficult situation when you have a wall of windsurfers above you and you don't want to bear away in the special gust... Anyway it's very cool to have a boat that is fast enough to go all around the place that you can take advantage of this special wind situation. For us the training conditions were perfect so we practiced a few tacks, foiling bear aways and gybes. It is interesting to see how you can influence the foiling with your body tension. Leaning out more means more flight high. More leaning inwards and/or more heel means less flight hight. This time I want to show you the toughest conditions I have on camera. The maximum Windspeed was about 32 Knots and the waves were gigantic. We were racing at the World Cup Final in Melbourne 2016. They needed that racing day for the status of a World Cup so they decided to sent us out. We came all the way from literally the other side of the world to sail that event so we went out, regardless that the conditions were way beyond our skill level. Unfortunately during the second race we capsized and the mast broke. I still do not know why. Usually carbon masts break at the impact. Diamonds and Cunningham were full on but still very unusual... Sad to say that it costed us our only possibility to sail a medal race. Why we capsized: We were close to the upwind mark when we capsized. Barbara wanted to pull the leeward daggerboard, a strategy in extreme conditions for bearing away. Unfortunately a big wave hit us and the boat capsized in the blink of an eye. Come on board of our full foiling catamaran for an adrenaline-charged ride in very strong winds and with heavy waves. It was the last day of the famous Princessa Sophia trophy in Palma de Mallorca. Fife days of racing with many downs and a few ups lay behind us. But we did not quit, even when we faced the extreme conditions. We were not the fastest but we managed to sail all races with no injuries or capsizes. Sometimes it's a bit frustrating when you are "the last boat standing" and all of your direct competitors have quit. For us it was crucial to develop a safe way of sailing the boat in storm conditions. We never had a full time coach who could tow us back to the safe harbor. When we went sailing we were on our own. Unfortunately I can't show you much of the downwind because after a big nosedive the GoPro was pointing in the sky. But even the tough upwind is impressive, If I may say so. Throwback Thursday: Back in 2015 we competed at the Formula 18 World Championship in Kiel. Looking at this old footage there's so much I want to say to my older me. So much I know now what would have been very helpful back then. The thing is, back then I thought we where decent sailors and a few month ago on the foiling Nacra 17 I thought we are very bad sailors. Sometimes it is necessary to travel back in time to see how much has changed and how much you have learned. Anyway, here are a few tipps to my older me: 1. You need more speed! Let the boat run. First speed and then slowly start to point up. You will sail the same angles but much faster. 2. Improve your standing position. 3. Downwind is good ? Lake Garda is one of the best sailing locations in the world. What makes that venue so great for sailing is the thermic wind. Especially on sunny summer days you can start your day sailing with the north wind called "vento". This wind usually dies at around 11 o'clock, leaving you enough time for a quick pasta party at the club. On the afternoon the wind changes direction and starts again, then called "ora" and this are by far the best sailing conditions you can think of. But before you can start your training you have to make your way through, what I call, layers of skill. First you have the novice windsurfers in the bay of torbole. Then you have the, last week I went to surf school group or pros who want to impress girls at the beach. The next group are good windsurfers and groups of regatta sailors followed by some kite surfers. To be honest sometimes it's a bit crowded. Not to say you can walk across the lake without getting your feet wet. But after all this effort there is enough room for us foiling sailors because we are quick enough to make our way half way up to Malcesine in the blink of an eye. Enjoy pure sailing. 10 min uncut sail training on the foiling Nacra 17 Catamaran. This time at the mediterranean sea preparing for the trofeo princesa Sofia in Palma de Mallorca. Together with our training partners from Germany we improved our sailing and especially our downwind skills. Good communication and a deep trust in each other is crucial. Even though our abridged conversations are often spiced with incorrect notations and do not make any sense at all we left it in for your entertainment. It is important that everybody on board knows what to do.
