When we go shopping, we try to take them with us and get them to carry some things. We always get them to help us moor up the boat and now we have started getting them to drive the boat into a mooring. There is always time for exploring and this time , we found a fancy market to hang out in. After a while, we want to get away from it all and find some places off the beaten track where we can walk and think and relax. Here’s an extra long video following Oceane as she journeys on land on Morovo Island, learning about their famous wood carving. We are currently anchored in Morovo lagoon, and have commissioned three villages for some wood carving projects for sylfia. Spirited and determined, Oceane decides to stay behind and spent couple of weeks on the island with the village. As you may know she wants to be a boat builder, and this was the first step to familiarize with ancient techniques! Go go girl! The Solomon islands have 67 language groups. Each group has a tribe, and different tribes made different art objects. Not only does the Solomon island art vary between language groups, it also varies over time. Artistic variation reflects their traditional cultures. Although the wood carving continues in some communities, it no longer flourishes throughout the archipelago as it did fifty years ago. Now days, the two most renowned areas for wood carving are Roviana and Marovo. Crystal clear water surrounds the islands in the Bahamas, but you can’t drink a lick of it. No surprise, it’s salty. The islands themselves have virtually no groundwater either, so where does it come from? There’s three options: It’s either shipped in, desalinated, or collected from the sky. Without a watermaker, our typical routine is to bring jerry cans ashore to fill up with freshwater. In the United States, water is often available for free, especially with a fuel fillup or marina stay. In the Bahamas, the precious resource usually costs around $0.50/gallon. It rains a ton in the islands, so we decide to start taking advantage. Our efforts are modest, but the amount of water we do collect gives us enough to wash a bunch of laundry, the dishes a half dozen times over, and ourselves. Hope you enjoy! We made it to Gibraltar! After a very long and very calm 5 day passage, we made it to Gibraltar from Almerimar, Spain and now it is time to explore. Herby makes new lazy jacks, and the two of them hike the Mediterranean Steps! Herby and Maddie also discuss possible route options to sail across the Atlantic Ocean this season. They look at the options available to them as they might be turned away from their next ports due to COVID and the lockdowns imposed by the countries along the way. If they can't stop in Madeira or Cape Verde, then they will be forced to cross the Atlantic without waiting for Hurricane Season to end! Removing the Yanmar Marine Diesel Engine from our Mumm 36 could have been a tricky job due to the limited space above the engine cover. The removal of the engine was a key step in rebuild which was made easy with the constructions of a crane which allowed our chief engineer and mechanic to do it single handed. The removal of the engine was key job that needed to be completed so we could see what other work was required on our Yanmar Engine and the connected saildrive. We had experience issues with the engine on the trip up the Irish Sea after her purchase and wanted to ensure that we would not have any problems once we completed the rebuild. We put the crane together reusing some steel frames, old blocks and wheels with it costing less the £20 for the nuts bolts and washers to put it all together. It would usually take 3 or 4 bodies to remove a Yanmar Engine of this size which weighs approximately 120kg. Due to the limited space above the engine cover on a Mumm 36 and no access to lift it externally building a customer crane was the only option. Using the crane to remove the engine had the added benefit of reducing the risk of further damage which may have occurred if we tried to lift the engine manually. As with many steps in the rebuild it was amazing to see what our chief engineer could achieve single handedly by planning out the job.
