Today, my crew and I will set out on a risky multi-day sail across the Mozambique Channel from Madagascar to South Africa. Feared in the sailing community, the channel is notorious for its unpredictable weather and violent wave formations. But what makes it especially dangerous is the Agulhas Current—an aggressive river of water running south along the South African coast. As we cross, it will push us southward, but it's hard to predict how much correction we’ll need. The real threat emerges when cold fronts from the Southern Ocean collide with the current, creating treacherous conditions and rogue waves over 30 meters high. Today we will find out if my crew and I can survive on a deserted island in the middle of the Indian ocean. We have just spent the past 4 days sailing from The Seychelles to Cosmoledo, a remote uninhabited island nearly a thousand miles off the coast of Africa. As sailors circumnavigating the planet, the thought of getting stranded is something often in the back of our minds. So we decided to take advantage of this opportunity and stimulate a survival situation on the deserted island. Today my crew and I will set sail to a small deserted island far off the coast of Africa, known as Cosmoledo. This will be the first multi day sail with our new crew of rookie sailors, so it will be a true test to see how they respond to sea sickness, confined living, and sailing around the clock. For the past couple of weeks my crew and I have been stuck in the Seychelles due to some immigration complications. What an awful place to be stuck, right? With the extra time on our hands we have been exploring the islands, eating new foods, and making friends with the locals. A few nights ago we met a friendly farmer named Gerry, who gave us a lift to our boat. That’s when we got the brilliant idea to spend a day working on his farm to see what life is like for a farmer in the Seychelles. Within this remote island cluster off the coast of Africa known as the Seychelles, grows a mystical endemic fruit that for centuries has been treated like gold. Today, the fruit or nut known as Coco De Mer is endangered and highly regulated by the government. But still, things like habitat destruction, forest fires, and illegal harvesting pose a threat to this precious fruit. My crew and I are soon to set sail to South Africa, but before we leave we wanted to learn more about Coco De Mer.
