Episode 149: SAILING after COVID! We haven't been out on the open ocean since lock down started.. firstly because we couldn't and then when we could we had way to much boat tasks to complete. It was so good to go out but the boat needed a good hull scrub. Ricky and Glen offered themselves to do it.. (they were so brave.. the water was freezing 🥶) We also worked a bit on our rigging to prevent the chafe we had from our Genoa rubbing up against our shrouds.. hopefully that will be sorted 🤞 We had a few questions on why we decided to get crew so we give you the answer to that and take a beautiful hike in New lands Forest. We couldn't fit our cruising catana catamaran in the travel lift so we pulled her out of the water using a VERY BIG crane. This was the first time we have hauled out Paikea since we bought her almost 3 years ago. This is another video in our Upgrading Paikea series and it was all hands of deck for the youngbarnacles team. Such a big couple of days prepping and hauling out! Are there any similarities between our St. Lucia quarantine and our China quarantine? Our two-week quarantine started upon our arrival on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, where our sailboat is undergoing phase out at the Moorings base. This is our second monitored quarantine in the past 9 months. The first was in Qingdao, China back in March, and the two quarantines have many more differences than similarities some of which we will highlight in this video. The quarantine in St. Lucia is basically staying in an all-inclusive resort for two weeks and enjoying all that resort life has to offer from BINGO nights and live entertainment to motorized and non-motorized water toys and island excursions. We are SO glad that we had our China quarantine first and THEN the St. Lucia quarantine. If the reverse, it would have been quite a challenge to endure! The Bay Garden Hotels have been wonderful and we are thankful to have found them in the 30 or so island-approved quarantine hotels. We had been waiting for easterlies for a while but they never came. So we decided to go under engine from Newtown Creek to Studland. Going through The Needles with wind over tide wasn't an easy task and we think that we learnt the lesson... The stitching came undone on the head of the sail and we had to take it down to repair it.
