The return of the bombero! Didac Costa, the firefighter from Barcelona, was back for his third circumnavigation and a second consecutive Vendée Globe. Having optimized his boat but removing the daggerboards, he was able ton concentrate on his performance. 14th 4 years ago, Didac finished 20th this time around but bettered his race time by nearly 12 days.

A brief stopover in La Linea turned into a two week wait for a weather window to leave the Straits of Gibraltar. However, the time wasn’t totally wasted as we stocked up on English food from Morrisons’ supermarket, did home schooling projects about the geography, history and wildlife of Rock of Gibraltar and visited the dentist. We even made some Christmas decorations and slushies from the hail that came with the frequent storms. With no weather window appearing and 6m swell out in the Atlantic we decided to fuel up with VAT free diesel before relocating further up the coast to Cadiz to give us more navigational options. However, this presented its own hazards. With recent reports of pirate activity and Orca (Killer Whale) attacks off the south coast of Spain, in the Gulf of Cadiz we were on high alert. However, we made it to a rocky anchorage outside of Cadiz before making a mad dash for the marina in the early hours when the swell literally bounced us awake. Our visit to Gibraltar was (supposed to be) short, so we packed in as much into our brief stay as possible. In the end we stayed way longer than expected in La Linea, on the Spanish boarder waiting for favourable winds to take us into the Atlantic. This blog was filmed over 2 days but we've squished it into a 'day visit' for easy viewing... and editing. We sailed from Almerimar the previous day, fighting a difficult tide on our approach. Our new crew member - Matt - had some difficulty with sea sickness so was as pleased as anyone to step ashore again. When we finally moored in La Linea marina on the Spanish side of the boarder, we quickly headed over the border. Gibraltar is actually a British colony ad has been since the 18th century, so we wandered through the typically British streets absorbing the history of this unique and iconic 'Rock'. After a full English breakfast (naturally), we headed up the top of the Rock via cable car where we immediately encountered the famous Barbary Macaque monkeys and carefully edged our way around them to the Skywalk viewing platform. Next on the agenda was St Michaels Cave before continuing all the way to the other side via the suspension bridge to the famous siege tunnels. There was also a great exhibition showing how bad the sieges and previous pandemics were - which were a lot worse than the current one! On the way down the Mediterranean Steps we had a brief encounter of the hairy kind when a rebel ape who took a liking to the kids's backpacks. At the far end of the rock is Europa Point, where we hoped to visit the Gorham's Cave complex, considered to be one of the last known habitations of the Neanderthals in Europe.. but it was busy.. apparently :/ So after a visit to Woody's old house we finished our visit with a walk around the Botanical Gardens and fish 'n' chips at the Lord Nelson Pub! As with most of our travelling recently, we encountered very few visitors. We spend a very beautiful final 2 days at sea before our approach to Cape Verde. Upon our arrival, however, we are told we must remain on the boat until the police and doctors come to us for a Covid test. The country is officially open, but after 4 days of waiting, we begin to dip too far into our food and water provisions for the crossing. We decide to go to shore with all of our boat and passport info so that we can get SIM cards and food. Ahoy, Bahia del Sol in El Salvador always triggers words like safe anchorage, hurricane hole and friendly people if you mention it to other cruisers. But there also pop up words like big waves, crossing the river bar and fear. It's a beautiful place and a really safe anchorage, the locals are friendly and there are many reasons to go there and only 1 not to go. Crossing the river bar is not for the faint hearted. We actually went back and forth to go there or skip it. We eventually decided to go and added an adventure to our memories we'll never forget. We don't think we were in real danger. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. C’est incroyable comme l’inconscient travaille en permanence et peut même de nuit torturer notre imaginaire. Faut dire aussi que l’attente fait monter la pression et notre histoire de Sail Drive commence sérieusement à nous peser. Depuis trois jours, je sens mon capitaine parenthésé dans une sorte de bulle, mais l’enfermement de ses pensées va pouvoir cesser, Blacky sort de l’eau aujourd’hui ! Avec un professionnalisme irréprochable, Black Lion est pris en charge par le staff de l’air de carénage qui lui trouve sa place au sec pour cinq jours. Tout est organisé ! Pendant que nous nous occupons du nettoyage de la carène de notre lion, l’équipe de mécanos, s’attaque à nos moteurs. Nous avons tellement l’habitude de faire les choses nous-même que déléguer la tâche de cette réparation est compliqué, mais nous avons que quelques jours sur le tarmac et autant laisser faire des professionnels. En moins de quinze heures, les vielles embases sont retirées, les nouvelles remplacées, l’accouplage terminé, les bavettes joints collées et des préfiltres installés, de quoi rassurer nos inquiétudes, jusqu’à ce que, la découverte d’une fuite d’huile sur nos deux petits nouveaux, nous angoisse ! Malgré la positivité de détective Jacouille, les échappées intempestives sont anormales ! Notre technicien a omis de cheker les joints d’embases ! Obligés de tout redemonter ! Tout ça sans parler que les connexions du moteurs tribord ont été arrachées, des boulons ont négligemment été repositionnés et un trop plein d’huile est a noté ! On peut faire con-fiance aux pros ! Si nous restons perplexes sur les travaux que nous avons man-datés, nous sommes plutôt fiers du résultat de notre chantier. Blacky est beau comme un sous neuf ! Des hélices aux francs bords, tout y est passé… Ponçage, époxy, petites réparations en fibre, antifouling, peinture, hublots et polish. L’heure de la remise à l’eau a sonné, et si la sortie est source de pressions, l’inverse est tout aussi appréhendée et pour cause, tout peut arriver ! Nos commandes ont été inversé !

In this episode, we learned to jump start our Yanmar 4JH45 engine on our Leopard 45 catamaran. Adrienne got the luck of the draw on this one. We've never done this before, so it was a bit intimidating. But she put on her big girl pants and handled it like a champ. We got the engine running and ended up sailing to Terra Ceia Bay where we spent the night with our good friends, Rebecca and Alfredo. They rafted their boat to ours, and we floated around sipping Champaign. Not a shabby way to spend the day. We also earned our SCUBA certifications through Aquatic Obsessions in St. Petersburg. Our open water dives were at the Blue Grotto near Ocala. The Blue Grotto is a large sink hole that has been converted to a SCUBA training site. They have several platforms at varying depths to accommodate divers of all skill levels. We even got to meet Virgil the turtle. We also went sailing around Tampa Bay on two occasions with friends Rebecca and Alfredo and David and Dana. David is an amazing photographer. Check out his stuff at ENVY Photographics. We just purchased an awesome but somewhat dated Catamaran Sailboat! This is a 1996 Fountaine Pajot Venezia 42 and she has all the space we need but she needs a bit of a face lift! We have big plans to refit our sailboat for long range off the grid cruising, including lithium batteries (LifePo4), Solar, Water maker, composting AirHead toilets and more! Today we will be completing an easy project with replacement and additional LED lights in the Salon and we will start the massive project of demolition and rebuilding the "work shop" into a birth with storage. After a quick provision in Magnetic Island, we head north again with SV Waterfront and go up the Hinchinbrook Channel. We try our luck fishing again and come across a few salt water crocodiles. We head back to Goold Island and take the tender over to Garden Island and find the bore to get some fresh water.
