As the UK went into the first lockdown in 2020, sailor and former Yachting World magazine columnist, 70 year old John Passmore headed for the Atlantic Ocean in his 1973 Rival. He left his home port of Walton-on-the- Naze in Essex, headed north, around the top of the Shetland Islands and into the Atlantic Ocean. He isolated for 42 days and travelled over 3600 miles. Before returning to Falmouth for supplies and repairs, he stopped at the Isles of Scilly to write his book. This is a MCB exclusive account of his amazing adventure. In this episode we complete a major upgrade to to our solar generating capacity. We add an additional 600w of solar to our existing 510w. 1110w of solar on a 36 foot monohull sailboat must be some sort of record lol! Earlier this summer we upgraded to 600 amps of lithium LiFePO4 batteries courtesy of our buddies on S/V Delos. We need a means of regenerating power to properly utilize the huge potential of this lithium bank. In addition to the new solar panels we also upgrade to Victron solar charge controllers to increase the efficiency of our existing solar panels. After a bit of research we learn that we are better off wiring our existing pair or solar panels in series rather than parallel. With the wiring work complete it's time to get down business of installing the new solar array. First step is to remove the old davits. We modified our existing davits to accept the panels. We are doing all the prep work ourselves to keep the welding costs down. We figure out the dimensions, geometry, and cut the stainless to size prior to dropping the davits off with the welder. While the davits are removed from the boat we do some fiberglass work to stiffen the transom where the port davit has been flexing and cracking the gelcoat. Now that all the prep work is done it is time for the big lift. The two panels bolted together weigh over eighty pounds. The easiest way we could think of installing the panels was to raft up to our buddy's fifty five foot catamaran named Avalon. We take advantage of Avalons high freeboard as a perfect work platform as well as use the mast as a makeshift crane. The new solar array is installed without any issues. Hier geht es um unseren Törn mit der Malu im Mai 2018! Gestartet wurde auf Rab in der Supetarska Draga Marina, weiter in die Pogana Bucht, Mali Losinj, Martinšćica, Valung, Malinska, Krk über den Kvarner wieder zurück in die Heimatmarina!

Während Europa in Schnee und Eis versinkt, haben wir an der türkischen Küste bestes Segelwetter. Mit vier Booten, drei deutsche und ein dänisches, genießen wir einen kleinen Ausflug nach Kekova. Für die Dilly-Dally ist es die erste Ausfahrt mit dem neuen Coppercoat-Anstrich. Und wirklich: Die alte Lady (Moody 425) läuft locker eineinhalb Knoten schneller als zuvor. Der Winter verwöhnt uns mit viel Sonne, die See ist immer noch knapp 20 Grad warm. Beste Zeit also für Wakeboarding. While Europe sinks in snow and ice, we have the best sailing weather on the Turkish coast. With four boats, three German and one Danish, we enjoy a short trip to Kekova. For Dilly-Dally it is the first trip with the new Coppercoat paint. And really: the old lady (Moody 425) easily runs one and a half knots faster than before. Winter spoils us with lots of sunshine, the sea is still almost 20 degrees. So it's the best time for wakeboarding.

Juni 2019: Das erste Mal segeln wir mit 3 befreundeten Paaren auf einer Lagoon 39 von Murter, Kaprije, Primosten, Solta, Brac, Hvar, Veli Drvenik über Kakan zurück nach Murter. Wir hatten eine tolle Woche mit vielen Badestops, lecker Essen, intensiven Gesprächen, beglückenden Sundownern und ganz viel Spaß. Seglerisch macht der KAT wenig Spaß. Fehlt doch beim Amwindkurs das Feeling der Schräglage ;) Amwind konnten wir ihn teilweise nur auf einer Kufe segeln. Auf der anderen Seite startete ich den Motor. Das An- und Ablegen mit diesem Monster unerschätzte ich. Wobei es bei mir wohl vor allem eine Kopfsache war, ob der doppelten Ausmaße. Trotz Skippertrainig Kat bekam ich es nicht gut hin. Auch Unterschätzte ich mit unerfahrener Crew unterwegs zu sein, daher verpasste ich es, sie ordentlich ein zu weisen. Ich bin mit meinen Kinder wahnsinnig eingespielt und dachte, die Erwachsenen würden das eben so gut hin bekommen ... Trotzdem wollten wir den Törn 2020 alle wiederholen, was wegen Corona flach fiel und so hoffe ich auf Juni 2021. Die Videos sind für Familie, Freund und Interessierte. Het was heerlijk om om en over het Naardermeer te wandelen. Veel mensen waren aan het schaatsen over het prachtige ijs.

We fly our tiny drone for the first time, witness a spectacular fire and start a big project on Wayzgoose. Lockdown and freezing winter days don't mean life can't get interesting! We bought a tiny little drone online and we tried to fly it for the first time. The conditions weren't ideal, it was windy and wet... but we couldn't help ourselves and gave it a go. We were too busy trying to get the hung of it so we didn't manage to get any footage. Bare with us... We might learn to drive it! 😂 The night came and as we were finishing dinner our neighbour knocked on the door to alert us about a big fire on the other side of the river Seine. It was really bright and we could see flames through the trees so we decided to go and have a look... It was after 6 and you are not supposed to be out after curfew here in France but we used the excuse of taking our neighbours dog out to go for a walk and see what was going on. Luckily it wasn't an actual fire and it was just the gas flare from the refineries across the river. The next morning surprised us with a dry and fairly warm day. Perfect to start one of our pending big projects. We are going to convert Waygoose into a Solent Rig. We'll be moving the current foresail back and replacing it with a bigger roller furling. On this episode we lay all the pieces of the new roller furling and make sure everything works and we know how to put it all together, we take some measurements and get ready for the next step. With restricted movements during this dark period in our history, we have not been able to visit many places at all in this past year and thus the Sailing Schipperkes lacked fun places to explore. But we recently discovered this good anchorage on the west side of Pangkor Island (during NE monsoon) that just happened to have a perfect small islet with a small beach, shallow protected waters and rocks to explore. Perfect to train the new puppies and to have fun all together in this deserted area (now that no tourists come here during current covid restrictions). Almost daily, our 5 Schipperkes get a chance to enjoy to visit their favorite playground … Zotke loves to swim & chase tiny fish, Zonne trains & plays with her puppies and the 3 puppies: Nico, Maya & Nilah learn so much playing. On the departure day I knew on the 2nd day a storm, with 6 meter waves and up 40-45 knots wind gusts, would cross the way, but Gibraltar was locking down and closing its borders, hence the urgency to leave, despite the risk. 4 days later Winderlust arrived in Lanzarote.
