#gibraltar #canaryislands #atlanticswell Leaving the Mediterranean Sea is quite daunting especially when you see how big the swell is in the Atlantic Ocean. We carefully check the weather and patiently wait for a good weather window before we set sail on this passage. We use predict wind and our iridium go for our weather routing but find some unexpected squally weather and some days of no wind so we have to use our engine. The first few days are quite lumpy so everyone feels tired and a bit sea sick. Nobody is eating too much until the ribs come out and so do the appetites. Once we are all used to the motion of the ocean and into the groove, we enjoy surfing down the waves and look forward to sighting land. Unfortunatley, we arrive at Lanzarote in the dark and have to anchor in a not so good anchorage. However, the anchor holds fine and we move into a marina the next day. This episode is about what we love the most, diving and the ocean. But takes us back to a recent history and the demise of Ships during WWII in the Solomon Islands. Today we present the Toa Maru, a cargo/ passenger vessel that was called to war and found its final days in a rugged bay near Gizo. . I remember that during the first dive we didn't even know where to begin. The were so many possibilities, so many opening, fish, coral, rubble... that we didn't see almost anything. With a better plan the second dive we were able to spots all the artifacts that were still there. It has been one of our favourite wreck so far. I mean, all of them had been pretty incredible! In this episode we leave Holland and sail all the way to Dieppe in France in one go so another over night sail this time in quite brisk wind. We are a middle aged couple from Sweden who has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our boat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. The sailing in our home water the Baltic Sea is part of our preparation to sail to the Mediterranean Sea. This serie was the first part of our adventure after we changed our lifestyle. Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boat and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders a 4 years ago. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 3 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans. Litza is a Devon Rex cat and she is the real cattain aboard. Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland in the spring 2020 then we sailed our home water in the Baltic Sea before we started our journey south.

Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 17 In this episode we start deplanking our rotten and eaten hull! We didn't think deplanking would need to go this far, but, oh well, it did! Not only most planks were eaten by worms but the fresh water infiltration on the deck made all the planks very humid at every frame... so we found ourselves needing to replace a lot more than expected. Our initial departure is rescheduled because of Tropical Storm Gonzolo and Hurricane Isaias. The direct bluewater route from St. Croix to Grenada takes us past a little-known island in Venezuelan waters where we encounter unknown lights and go into a high-security mode. Are they pirates of the Caribbean from Venezuela or hard-working fishermen? We don’t want to find out. At this time we really only have a few choices for hurricane season in the USVI. We can stay and have a higher chance of a direct hurricane hit, or we can go to Maine or Grenada, really the only two places open and safe(er). Grenada was closer to the southern ocean and South America, where we hope to go on our around-the-world voyage. We see large waves and a max wind speed of 38.4 knots as we barrel towards the blue-green waters and volcanic black sand beaches of St. Georges Grenada where 14 days of quarantine await us. Our top boat speed while double reefed and surfing storm waves was over 11 knots. About Us: So who are we? In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-meter plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. We have had excellent sea conditions in the Atlantic ocean! Built out of steel by Seahorse Marine in China, this George Buehler design is the smallest in the ocean series, but just as mighty as her bigger sisters. (The Coot is smaller, but doesn’t have the same range or profile). Jubilee is seaworthy, livable and affordable. If Jubilee looks familiar, she is. JMYS created an original video that was released in 2017 and has hundreds of thousands of views and many thumbs up. At the time we signed our current listing agreement, Jubilee was placed into winter storage (in a covered, heated building). Eager to get the word out we had a dilemma to overcome – how can we talk about her without getting aboard to show her off? Not wanting to wait for spring to make a presentation video, Jeff came up with the idea to try something different. In this episode we decide to throw caution to the wind and sail to the very north eastern tip of Maine, right at the Canadian border. Its late September and we should be heading south but adventure calls! Exploring Cross Island is a real treat. The island shows the rugged side of Maine and also it's incredible beauty. Our first hike we wind up going off trail and wind up bush whacking through dense foliage. We enjoy exploring the old life saving station which later became an Outward Bound camp. Being the end of September we had to wait awhile for a day of good weather at Cross Island but when the sun came out we were in awe of the scenery. We were boat bound in the cold and foggy weather, we used the time to cook chicken soup onboard Calico Skies. After exploring Cross Island we start the trek west arriving to Great Wass Island. Another cozy anchorage with great protection. We may be starting the trip back south but the adventure isn't over. We face quite a few challenges in the coming weeks including being towed by Delos and suffer an injury as sea. David Meek and his wife Melanie Aubert decided to go on sabbatical in 2017 to take some time to travel. Avid sailors, they bought a Cabot 36 in St Martin with a plan to sail the Caribbean for a year. While they waited out the 2017 Caribbean hurricane season, they spent 9 weeks exploring Europe, including a week-long sailing charter in the Greek Islands. Since then, they have been on a mission to see as many Caribbean Islands as possible, planning to get down to their boat every winter. Plans are currently on hold due to Covid, but David will share his experience of sailing and exploring the eastern Caribbean with some stunning photo and video.
