Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. EP 163:We weren't allowed on the ISLAND!? After a 1200nm sail from Walvis Bay, Namibia to ST Helena Island.. we were hoping by some miracle we were allowed on the Island.. That was not the case and were told under strict instructions not to get off the boat at all! We were allowed to dive around our boat and clean the hull and check our mooring but not swim out to far. We weren't allowed to visit any other boats.. even Patricia and Allen who have sailed with us from Cape Town to Namibia and now ST Helena.. but we were grateful that we could fill up with diesel and water and get some sort of fresh provisions.. although it was damn expensive. The swimming and diving was absolutely incredible and the water was as blue as blue can be. Since we couldn't go ashore.. we took the drone up to check out the island from a cell phone screen... it was better than nothing. We had some steering problems and had a bit of air in the system. We couldn't do a proper bleed at sea so got down to bleeding the system thoroughly and serviced our engines while we were at it. Then it was a 700nm journey off to Ascension Island. Do you dare hike Sentry Hill? Well, we did...After weeks of boat projects, we were ready for a break! On a morning run, I happened upon the trailhead marker of Sentry Hill and that tagged the location to return to with Brown. We picked an early Sunday morning to tackle Sentry Hill, a 1200 foot tall hill top on the Dutch side. The trail marker estimates a 3.5 hour return trip and we were prepared with enough water and food to survive! If only we had read the reviews of Sentry Hill before we started... About 30 minutes into the hike, we started coming upon spider webs across the trail about every 3 feet. And, to make matters worse, we had to dodge inch long thorny shrubs that seemed to catch our shirts and shorts, no matter how we passed. Needless to say, it was slow going. The spiders were getting bigger and bigger, the thorns more and more possessive and ripping out chunks of flesh, and enter stage right - the orange hornets. This is a new breed of hornet and one that we hoped to avoid in a close encounter. It took us 2 hours to get to the top, but we almost turned back a few times. We were really discouraged as it was not as much hiking as it was bush whacking and spider web home wrecking. When we arrived at the top, we were surprised to find a platform in front of us with a rickety ladder to climb up, which we did. On top of the platform, we enjoyed 360 degree views of both the Dutch and French side as well as the further islands like Anguila and St. Barts. And, a couple of very shy monkeys showed their faces and then scampered off into the bush. We scoured the platform for ANY potential way down that was not the way we came. There were chairlifts and zip lines, but no paths down other than returning via Sentry Hill path. We were dreading the trip back when we HEARD a voice from below and it made us SO excited to know that someone else was as foolish as we were to take this hike! And, it could not have been a more fun and adventurous pair from New England, Terri and David. David told us that the online eview of the trail (he was smart and looked in advance but didn't tell Terri) was that it was super thorny with tons of spiders and webs. He was surprised on his way up that there were no spiders and the thorns were cropped back a bit! We were happy to clear the trail for them! They made the descent fun and enjoyable, stopping once for a geo-cache (my first time) and great laughs and conversation. What a gift, but even better was a ride back to our boat in their car from the trailhead!! British solo skipper Pip Hare, 47, fulfilled the dream that she has held since she was a teenage sailor in her native East Anglia, England when she crossed the finish line of the Vendée Globe solo non-stop round the world race at 00:57:30 hrs UTC on the 12th February, emerging from a bitterly cold Bay of Biscay night off Les Sables d'Olonne on the west coast of France to take an excellent 19th place. After 95 days, 11 hours, 37 mins and 30 seconds of racing, Hare is the first British skipper to finish the 2020-21 race, and only the eighth women ever to finish the Vendée Globe in its history. Her performance on a 21-year-old IMOCA, the oldest boat yet to finish this edition, has drawn admiration from all corners of the world of French and international ocean racing, not just for her high level of motivation and drive throughout the race but for her intelligent, efficient courses and her ability to push her elderly but evergreen boat hard all the way to the finish line. Since childhood, Pip Hare has dreamt of competing in the Holy Grail of solo racing. On a Monday morning in February 2021, the Pelagic 77 was launched at the KM Yachtbuilders yard. Her official name will be Vinson of Antarctica and she will be added to the charter fleet of Skip Novak. But, the yacht will also be used as an educational tool to learn children from Chile to sail and to provide a location for students, guests and scientists to learn more about sailing, the ocean, marine life, etc. Designed by Tony Castro and built by KM Yachtbuilders she is a strong, sturdy and though lady who will keep her guests and crew safe and comfortable while making journeys in high latitudes. Many have replied about the rudders and draft of the keel, please see below: There is a centerboard inside the stub keel, which is retracted in the video, thus not shown. The draft is 2.15-4.30m. Please read Skip Novak's reply about the rudder concerns here: "We must acknowledge that this vessel is more multi-purpose (sail training and general charter and owner’s use) than Pelagic Australis which is purely dedicated to high latitudes. Having said that VOA can certainly navigate in the same areas as PA both north and south, but using a bit more care with the situations she finds herself in. Mainly, not having a fully lifting keel is a big factor in this regard. Yes, the rudders are not protected by a skeg. But this is not a problem in motoring through brash ice with care. And note the rudders are close to the center line, unlike some yachts with twin rudders breaking the waterline, which clearly would not be acceptable. But can we become frozen in for the winter with this arrangement? – No. That was never in the planning. We have never had the need for propeller protection. In fact, I don’t believe in it as if you ‘cage’ the prop, ice can actually get stuck in the cage rather than float up and away from the propeller."
