Aftermath: Recovering from two hurricanes In the spring of 2002 we bought a 1988 Bayfield 32 In pristine condition in Sorel, Quebec and named her Wind Dancing. For the next 15 years we lived on her every year from January to March in the beautiful turquoise waters of the British Virgin Islands. This all came to an abrupt halt in September, 2017 after two ferocious hurricanes hit the storage yard and destroyed 80% of the boats. This talk will examine “before and after” and how we are coping. About Rod: “In 1999 I was 60 years of age and had never been on a sailboat. Out of curiosity more than anything else, I signed up for the 4 day course “Learn How to Sail” with the Ottawa Sailing School. After completing the course I was totally hooked and convinced my wife that we should buy a sailboat. Little did we know that this decision would change both our lives and our bank account forever!”

First sail of 2021 and first attempt at making a vlog.

When we have heard that our friend Herbert has a Parasailor on his Lagoon 42, immediately we wanted to do a test sail. That's why we brought the sail to Jan's SY Makamae, a Sun Odyssey 44i. Unfortunately the sail would have been to big for my Moody 425. Even if we know that the shape of the sail is made for a Katamaran with different measurements, it did a fantastic job on the monohull, too. In light winds around ten knots the Sun Odyssey was going more than six knots. The wing construction of the Parasailor did a really good job, no single time the Parasailor, which by the way is the older model, collapsed.

In Mariehamn doen we boodschappen en tanken we diesel voordat we vertrekken naar het zuiden richting Zweden. Helaas slaan we de archipel van Stockholm over en zeilen direct naar Gotland. Het is inmiddels herfst en een eerste storm zit ons op de hielen. We hebben een mooie overtocht en komen aan in dichte mist in Visby. We laten een groot passagiersschip dat opdoemt uit de mist toch maar even voorgaan. Wij zijn Ben en Felia. Jaren hebben wij de droom gehad om samen over de wereld te zeilen. In mei 2020 zijn we aan dit grote avontuur begonnen. In onze Atlantic43, Eva genaamd, gaan wij waar de wind ons brengt. Eva is een aluminium zeiljacht met ophaalbare kiel. Eigentlich wollten ein paar Freunde und ich mit Kalle und seinem Boot über den Atlantik segeln. Das hat jetzt aber alles doch nicht so geklappt. Naja egal... Wir sind dann alle an Bord der TONGA gegangen. Nachdem Luna und ich TONGA in der Marina Tazacorte auf der Kanaren-Insel La Palma gelassen haben, war ich sehr erleichtert TONGA nach einem halben Jahr wieder zu sehen. Seitdem segeln wir quer durch die Kanaren, suchen uns versteckte Ankerplätze, kochen und schlafen am Strand. Quasi autark in der Natur. Marcus ( der Bruder von Luna ) und ich fühlen uns so richtig entschlackt. Unser Boots-Leben auf den Kanaren. Ps: Luna studiert in den Niederlanden und bei Bernd ist auch "alles i.O." ( seine Abkürzung für alles in Ordnung ). Wir freuen uns uns schon alle gemeinsam wieder zu segeln. Wir sind schon am Planen für den Segelsommer. C'est notre première navigation à deux et ça tombe bien car il y a un avis de vent frais le Samedi. Le vent est Sud ,il nous pousse au large mais la mer est calme donc même si dans les rafales le bateau gîte bien, on prend du plaisir. Le Dimanche le vent est toujours Sud mais les rafales sont moins forte. This boat was sold new and commissioned in 2018. OCTOBER 2020 We bought new sails from "de Vries Maritiem" in Lemmer. One of the few sailmakers in the Netherlands that actually makes the sails onsite. They were ready on Leontien's birthday, so we called them her present. After installing and testing them once, we made our own stack packs (lazy bags) and lazy jacks. We only sailed with them twice before the winter weather took over. We noticed some small items that need to be addressed by the sailmaker, but we are confident that it will all be handled properly. June 2019 On our way back to Florida, we noticed the motor amperage was off the charts on the starboard side. An investigation revealed that the fan had failed and even replacing it midway in the stream did not help. In this episode, we learn we burnt up the starboard motor, demagnitizing it and had to remove it, crate it, and ship it for repair. It's called a BOAT. And we all know what that acronym stands for...
