We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. #78 (traversée Cap Town – Luderitz) ✍ 16 février 2021, il doit faire à peine 18ºC, nous sommes détendus, sereins. Nous avons juste une petite modification à faire au niveau de la drisse de grand-voile, pour on ne sait quelle raison, elle vrille ! Peut-être est-elle trop neuve, il lui faut le temps de s’adapter, mais nous ne pouvons la laisser tel quel, avec un serre câble sur sa poulie, cela devrait la maintenir ! Sea Loon et son capitaine ont déjà levé l’ancre et dans Granger Bay, il ne reste que nous. Nous quittons l’Afrique du sud, sa luminosité fabuleuse et ses paysages grandioses. Pour un dernier panorama nous ne pouvions espérer mieux, la montagne de la table est dans toute sa beauté ! Dégagée, dominante, elle se voit à des milles à la ronde. Notre nouvelle chaine a rassuré notre mouillage, bien rangée dans sa baille, elle retournera à l’eau à Luderitz, notre prochaine destination en Namibie. Près de cinq cent milles en vent portant, dans le courant du Bengala où se meuvent des milliers d’oiseaux, des centaines d’otaries et des tas de baleines. Ici, la vie prend tout son sens, les éléments s’équilibrent, la nature depuis la nuit des temps bouge, les vents circulent, les courant se déplacent, les températures varient, les espèces migrent, et pendant ce temps, pendant ce temps… l’Homme tente de se protéger en se privant de ses libertés. Il s’automutile en se persuadant qu’il va arriver à dominer la nature, qu’il va la soumettre à ses lois, qu’il va l’assujettir à ses fantasmes ! Mais cette grande Dame, n’a pas besoin de nous, c’est elle qui décide, l’univers évolue et nous avec… Dans cette mutation, je ne peux imaginer nos vies restreintes à la sédentarisation, nous sommes comme ces oiseaux, attirés inexorablement vers le large ! Avec notre Blacky, ce besoin vital n’a pas de limite, portés par ses voiles, nous restons libres. Les manœuvres s’enchainent, c’est à croire que notre Lion noir, après tant de semaines à quai, voulait faire dépoussiérer toute sa voilure ! Il se cale un moment sous foc, grand-voile, puis passe sous spi et finit sa journée dans la légèreté de son genneker. Cap nord, sur notre bâbord, avec tout l’art qu’il sait user, le soleil disparait, nous plongeant dans cette enveloppe crépusculaire symptomatique de nos angoisses « pré-nuitale ». Elles ne durent jamais très longtemps, sauf quand, comme ce soir, une incohérence vient nous abuser ! Nous naviguons dans deux cent mètres d’eau, loin de la côte, lorsque mon capitaine en pleine observation instrumentale, s’agite ! Il ne reste plus que dix mètres d’eau sous nos coques ! La cartographie n’indique pourtant pas cette chute brutale, nous redoublons de vigilance, le sondeur décompte ! Huit mètres, rien n’est à vue, six, la pression monte, cinq, l’oppression gagne, quatre mètres quatre-vingt, « on affale le gennak, tribord toutes sous moteurs ! ». L’incompréhension est totale ! Mon Tchoupi est contrarié… 117 milles en vingt-quatre heures, position 32º22'311 sud ; 17º10'194 E, la nuit a été paisible. Magnanime, l’atlantique nous régale de sa généreuse clémence et nous fait don d’un beau thon. Mais nos leurres n’attirent pas que les poissons, des sortes de puffins n’arrêtent pas de les lorgner ! Malgré notre veille, l’un d’eux fini par s’hameçonner, nous l’avons vu à temps. Il est blessé mais sauvé. À part cette faune marine, nous ne croisons pas grand monde, deux ou trois cargos cette nuit et si, chose inhabituelle depuis bien longtemps, un voilier ! C’est même lui qui nous a vu le premier et nous a appelé sur VHF. Partit trois heures après nous depuis le Waterfront de Cap Town, il nous a certainement dépassé durant la nuit, nous le rattrapons à vitesse grand V. Au petit matin, nous avons de nouveau été dépassé, y aurait-il anguille sous patate ? Ça sent le moteur cette histoire, pour le reste, nous allons devoir aussi en user, il ne reste qu’un léger souffle sur un océan plat, ce qui, après l’ébranlante nuit que nous venons de passer, n’est pas pour nous déplaire ! Lequel des dieux s’est amusé à installer des dos d’ânes sur notre route ! À 30º26'101 sud et 16º01'583 est, le ciel est d’un pur bleu et sans le vent, la température est en net progression, parfait pour vaquer à quelques occupations… Six heures de moteur plus tard, Blacky déploie ses ailes, Gennak et Solent en ciseaux, notre roi des océans cavale entre 6 et 8 nœuds. Nous avons gardé notre allure toute la nuit et ce matin, un sud-sud -est va nous obliger à empanner. Plus que 150 milles, cap 340º, escorter par les albatros. Indolents, ils nous survolent, et pendant qu’ils tournoient autour de nous, nous émettons nos théories sur la vie ! Au vent d’un cargo, des effluves de vanille nous parviennent, plus loin, un bouillon de courant nous malmène et enfin à 18 milles de la côte, la Namibie fait prendre du relief à notre horizon. Il est dix-huit heures, dernière soirée en mer avant l’arrivée, mon Tchoupi ...

While Paikea is out of the water it is a perfect time to have a good look at our Volvo Penta sail drives. Shayne has already made up some nice new fibreglass covers to fit over the holes in the hulls where the sail drive enters the water. Now it's time to clean up the sail drives and replace all the items that have perished. It was a big job but the end product looks fantastic. The compounds we used are linked below. This is a good reference for those of you who would like to know what sort of adhesives/anticorrosion agents are worthwhile purchasing for your boat. In terms of antifoul products, the options are varied. It really depends on your requirements, where you intend to do most of your cruising, how long the boat will be in the water and how often you intend to replace the antifoul. The last day of the 3rd Portugal Grand Prix - Round 2 had two races for the 470 and three for the RS:X, with 15 knots! Have a look at what happened in the water.

Ciao! In this video, we’re in Sardinia and we sail to the incredibly unique and odd island of Asinara just off the northwestern coast of Sardinia. Asinara is pretty much uninhabited, and is a national park, home to lots of wildlife (including donkeys, and a rare population of white albino donkeys) but was also home to one of the most important high-security prisons in Italy up until recently. You can’t anchor here though, and have to pay for a mooring buoy, but it’s worth the visit. We go for an explore, visit the old prison, learn all about the island’s history, swim in one of the unspoiled paradise-like beaches, and hike up to the highest point of the island. We spend a total of 48 hours on the island and it felt so amazing to be so disconnected from society for that time! This is our last stop in Sardinia before we set sail for Menorca in the Balearics. ----------------------- ABOUT US: Hello! We're Alex and Lars. Riced cauliflower tacos are what’s for dinner tonight aboard SV SweetPea this taco Tuesday. Off grid living aboard a boat is tasty. Cauliflower is supposed to be extremely healthy being a cruciferous vegetable with added benefits for guys. Apparently it is supposed to help scrub out excess estrogen in males. All I know for sure is that these tacos turned out tasty.
