Source: https://www.podbean.com/eau/pb-7cyd5-fc30d2 This coming week we celebrate International Women’s Day and I just love learning from all the women who sail about their experiences, what draws them to want to live on the ocean, learning to sail, dealing with expectations and small living spaces, and advice they give other women considering changing their lifestyle to live aboard a sailboat. In this week’s podcast I have the great pleasure to interview Alex Blue from S/V Delos. As it turns out at the moment, we live on opposite sides of Lake Tahoe and she was so gracious about sharing her experiences with us and what’s next for she and Brady as they transition to life on land. Welcome to Covert Castaway, our fully uncut experience making the transition to be sailing liveaboard cruisers. Join us as we share what we are learning as we make the lifestyle change to sell our stuff, quit our jobs, buy a boat and explore the world. Join the conversation on our Sailing AWEN facebook page or drop us a note at sailingawen@gmail.com.

Sailing the North Atlantic can be tricky in the best of times, and these are not the best of times. It's a challenging sail with rolly conditions and strong winds, but a rogue waves causes damage that leaves the crew rationing. Will our equipment make it to Iceland? IMPORTANT UPDATES AT BOTTOM I'm trying something new on our topsides which regular viewers will know have been a battle to keep looking good. Instead of applying polish which seems to wear off in months and leave the gelcoat exposed to oxidisation, which makes it really chalky, I'm trying some new fangled nano technology! This is a product that chemically bonds to the gelcoat and becomes the working surface, it has UV protection and stops stains and even minor scratches. The product that was recommended to me by viewers was Ceramic Base and Top coat by Gtechniq. It is rated to last from 3-5 years, I was lucky to get even 3-5 months from polish of any kind and it's certainly much easier to apply than polish. This video takes you through all the prep for tired gelcoat, which is the same wether you choose polish or a high tech product for protection. And then the comparison between a polish and a ceramic finish. This video will go out March-April 2021, I will keep you guys informed on how the different technics perform in the episodes as we sail. I will post links here to where you can find them when they happen so do check back. If you're thinking of using Gtechniq products, so far I thoroughly recommend them, if you're interested have a look on this link.. http://www.gtechniq.co.uk/ And remember ceramic coatings aren't just for old gelcoat, in fact they are really best on brand new gelcoat to protect it properly from the start. This technology has been used very successfully for some time now on top end cars to protect them from new. Gtechniq have a range of products specifically for marine use, I've used a few of them now and they all seem really good. UPDATE 2022 Initially the ceramic coating seemed to hold up very well. However this was short lived. ^ months on the chalkiness was returning and after a year the whole topsides needed redoing. This is a shame as the Gtechniq product is too expensive to use in this way. UPDATE 2023 While on the hard in Lagos Portugal I took the gelcoat right back to a good shiny surface, you can see the process here: https://youtu.be/29IuvJg9o6c This should be a very good option for tired gelcoat, unfortunately it appears ours was too porous even at the lower levels and the treatment didn't last as long as I would have liked.
Our bilge has been completely rebuilt. And now it's time to use whatever it takes to make it smooth. Fairing, sanding, painting, flow coat? peel ply? Who knows. The reason we want it smooth is because we want it to look good after all our hard work, no way could we leave it half done! And the other is functional, a smooth bilge is much easier to clean and help keep our boat from smelling like a gross old boat! Thanks for watching- With love The Evans' **************************************** *Our Boat* 2008 Beneteau 49 3 cabin 2 head 4JH4-TE Westerbeke generator Mast, sails and rig are in excellent condition and in storage Here's what we *think* we know about her past. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. Boat Projects Begin! Fixing the Rudder on our Seawind 1600 Catamaran | Harbors Unknown Ep. 21 We hit bottom. We’re not proud of it but if you’re in a room full of sailors and one claims they never hit bottom they’re either lying or they never leave the dock. Our rudder was pushed up and the metal pin worked really hard to keep it in place and was dragged down through the board. There was damage in a couple other places so our friend Pablo is teaching us how to fix it. Pablo is the owner of Southern Cross Boat Works Shrink Wrap & Scaffolding https://scaffoldsandshrinkwrapservices.com/, sailed for many years and has worked on boats throughout his life. He shared many tips with us and the experience was invaluable. Thank you Pablo! If you like this video give it a thumbs up, subscribe, and share it with a friend. Thanks for watching and we’ll see you next week. If you're new here, Harbors Unknown is the story of two dreamers, Kristin and Fabio Potenti, and our French Bulldog dog Yoda. We sold our home at the beginning of the pandemic (May 27th, 2020) and moved aboard our #Seawind1600 #catamaran, Wanderlust, in September. We plan to sail her to Harbors Unknown, and explore the world’s vast cultures through food, a common thread amongst people everywhere. Connecting with people and places through the local cuisine, and showing how those dishes can be cooked on a boat with limited space and resources. We share the adventures of #boatlife and how it’s possible to live an #alternativelifestyle that provides freedom and fulfillment. Until we officially begin our world voyage, we’re exploring the beautiful waters of #SouthFlorida and the Florida Keys. Subscribe now to join our #sailingadventure. Do yourself a favor and watch this frustratingly funny video to not only laugh at us but also both avoid and learn from our mistakes! We bought a washing machine based upon the measurements provided to us by a third party in St. Lucia, had it shipped to Sint Maarten from the US and they were incorrect so we faced a dilemma: Give the machine up or find a way to make it fit! We were thrilled when we learned that with a good strategy and A LOT of effort, it was possible to get the washer into the forward head, but there would be a lot of heroics to do so. First, we had to remove the hallway molding, the door to the forward berth, the door and molding to the head. It took us a whole morning of using a razor blade, heat gun, and leveraging plank to finally clear the pathway. After all of this was done, a boater called Larry came to cut into our doorway, just enough to fit the washer through which was done quite easily. He then fixed the plumbing so the washer was directly fed water from our fresh water pump and the rinse cycle spit the water out the same fitting as the sink, straight into the ocean. After Larry finished his work, Terrell and his team ran wires to the head and installed an outlet for a direct plug in vs. an extension cord, making life so easy. After he finished, Brown came in and capped the lines to the shower so we didn't accidentally give the washer a wash-down. The downside of the washer is that it uses 26 gallons of water to do a load of laundry. Granted, the load is quite large so potentially we would use the same amount with 2-3 smaller loads, but our water maker may have met its match. The upside is that our laundry is done quickly and without the need for a bucket and plunger. The manual labor saved on washing can be exerted in other areas of constant boat projects. We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Join us on our sail south! We started off the week sailing upwind from Sampson Cay to Black Point, where we waited a few days for the wind to clock back around before starting our trip down to George Town. We caught our first tuna in the Bahamas on the way (we think it was a yellowfin?), attempted to make some sushi, and ran some errands! First look at the new Bavaria Cruiser 34 (2020 model) in Marina del Rey, CA with Cruising Yachts Inc
Diverse and functional We believe that even smaller yachts can be tremendous fun. With the CRUISER 34 we have succeeded in bringing together the most important aspects of sailing – sailing pleasure and spaciousness – in one boat. This yacht has excellent – and very safe – sailing characteristics. The XXL cockpit area is pleasantly commodious during sailing and in between. And below deck there is all the room you need for six people. The CRUISER 34 is the small, yet still very great BAVARIA. It comes in a 2- and a 3-cabin version with single or twin helm positions. For additional information about this boat or to see our complete inventory of new and used sailboats, catamarans and motoryachts, please visit our website at https://cruisingyachts.net.
