Epic adventure to Ni'ihau on the Ho'okahi! We encountered humpbacks right outside the harbor, then came across short-finned pilot whales in the channel accompanied by a couple of silky sharks. We had three epic dives, caught onos on our surface intervals, and ended the day with a whale shark!!!
Last part of our Atlantic crossing, after a lot of days at sea we finally see land! We are Thomas and Petra and late August 2020 we left Sweden and started our sail towards the Caribbean. Lately the weather has been kicking our butts, so we decide to take a two day weather window and set out from Beaufort, NC on a 220 mile sail to Charleston, SC. As usual, the forecast turns for the worse and we find ourselves beating into 30 knots for a little while. During night watch I have an unfortunate wind shift which catches our downwind pole and literally launches it into the ocean. Oh man, that’s going to be an expensive thing to get built…. We make it into Charleston before the next blow comes through and are safely tied to a dock which allows me to fix a few things we broke on the sail down before we continue on to St. Augustine Florida! After suffering some teething issues following the reinstall of our spars and standing rigging, we set off on a shakedown cruise from Antigua to Dutch Sint Maarten. This 90nm passage was perfect for the purpose. There were significant winds and a good deal of swell. And Talisman handled both with aplomb.

After 2.5 months in the Bahamas, we're sad to leave these crystal clear blue waters. This week, we sail to Great Inagua. This is the first year that the Bahamas has implemented the requirement to check out of the country. According to Bruce van Sant's Passages South, the thornless path from the Bahamas down to the Dominican Republic would entail sailing from Mayaguana in the Bahamas to Turks & Caicos, but Mayaguana is not a check out port. Also, due to COVID-19 and pandemic restrictions and the need for COVID tests, we are avoiding Turks & Caicos which means we are unable to take the thorns out of our path and have sailed down to Great Inagua as our last island of the Bahamas. See how the super east check-out process for the Bahamas went for us. All we needed was to bring our check-in papers (everything they gave us at customs and immigrations), boat registration and passports with us! Sailing Anegada to Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands. Visiting the hurricane torn Gorda Sound, Oil Nut Bay, and then sailing down to The Baths. After a few days on the stunning island of Anegada, we have a very tranquil sail south, back to Virgin Gorda, passing Richard Branson’s Necker island on the way and arriving into Oil Nut Bay. We visit the resort there with its gorgeous beach villas. Then take a dinghy tour (with drone footage) around Gorda Sound, seeing what has become of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Bitter End and Saba Rock resorts, 18 months after hurricane Irma struck in September 2017. We then motor down to Spanish town, recording the coast line on our way. 12-13 March 2019 Visited: Necker Island, Prickly Pear Island, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Bitter End, Mosquito Island, Maho Bay, Mango Bay resort, Baraka Point Estate, Katitche Point Great House, Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Oil Nut Bay Resort.

Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. Meet Catherine and Todd, proud new owners of HH50 Lickety. Learn more about their decision to purchase a semi-custom catamaran with very little relevant sailing experience, and move aboard with their two dogs, leaving their life in LA behind for good.
With our MDF board properly measured and cut, we can now transfer that to our bulkheads to cut out three perfectly matching doors. The two of us take the measurements on the bulkheads themselves to find the centerline - and from there, where the doors will sit at each end. Screwing the template into place, Matt uses his router to make a few passes, and presto, we have doors! The plan had been to do some glassing on Bulkhead 5 as soon as we'd cut out the doors, but an unexpected storm and high humidity stopped us from getting that far. Luckily, Bulkhead 4, sitting up on the bridge deck, still had plenty of work to offer us for the afternoon. We hope you enjoy! Much love from Annapolis! I don't know why I thought I could fix my own bulkheads, but I'm in too deep to back out... There are about a thousand Lagoon 450 Catamarans and sadly they all have defective bulkheads. Lagoon claims there are only a few broken boats and won't take responsibility. Out of 55 boats who have checked so far, over 52 have the same issue. Instructions and a form to report your findings are here: http://rspott.com/bulkhead/ Text from the original facebook post: "I've been thinking a lot about how things could have been if I went with my 2nd choice...the Leopard 48. I'd be living the dream aboard, lounging on the flybridge next to my hot wife and watching the kids bounce around everywhere they shouldn't. Instead I'm alone on the hard and have to climb a 12 ft ladder in the middle of the night just to share a single toilet with a whole marina. We have broken bulkheads...and fixing them has been harder than I ever imagined. I went to a lagoon dealer in the Carribean for help and they sarcasticly told me the fix was a secret. Instead I had to follow a stranger to a foreign country who was kind enough to share the repair and guide me through the process. To be honest we considered cutting our losses and buying a newer 450, but after FULLY exposing the bulkheads and seeing 3 of my buddies with the same issue in the same place, it was clear that the boat had a tiny weakness in a small area and we'd eventually have the same problem on a newer 450. Despite these exhausting 2 months, I still absolutely love my 450--it's hands down the best boat in its range! C'mon the fly bridge is amazing! I've straightened all 15 tons of her and am finally prepped for grinding and cutting the fiberglass... Hull 205, 2013, No hurricane damage, not grounded, ex charter. ". #bulkheads #lagoon450

Hope you can make it. Details of time in the vlog. Music Luna Keller - I don't know where I'm going WHO ARE WE? In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill #NeverStopWanderingNeverStopWondering. #TheCruisingKiwis

During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time. We decide to leave our cozy anchorage in west palm and head south in open ocean to Key west with stops along the way.
We're making repairs and upgrades to prepare our Leopard 45 catamaran to sail around the world. We install new anchor chain and learn to cut it ourselves, install a new triple clutch bank, and actually move on board. Organization is the key when moving lots of stuff into a small space. Visit our website to track us and for some awesome blogs by Adrienne at: https://svwindtherapy.com/

During the pandemic lock down in Bermuda, the number of boats allowed testing on the water was restricted, so the Australian team practiced on the U S A's Yacht. They Rolled it in! Yes they capsized Jimmy's race boat. Was that a smart move on their fellow Aussie who is now Skipper of the American Team. Nobody was hurt and little damage was done to the boat, except to a few Aussie sailors reputations. The Popular Charleston Race Week was held with lots of great racing but no off-water festivities. We have our exclusive report on the fantastic racing with interviews. Two 70 Foot Foiling Trimarans, PowerPlay and Maserati, have set off together to break the Cowes to Dinard race record. Day 4, the final day, of the 2021 European Finn Open and Under 23 Championships were held in Villamoura Portugal. We have all the action in the final day of the Australian Twenty Twenty-One, Moth National Championships. The wind was up and the action was spectacular. This class is definitely Olympic material. The Gitana Racing Team are showing us some of their state-of-the-art technology in their latest huge Maxi Trimaran, Edmund de Rothschild. The route for the coming The Ocean Race Europe has been announced. It starts in May, 2021. Race organizer, Marco Nannini, has announced more skippers for the 2023, Global Solo Challenge Round the World Race.
