LOVE the welcoming committee of sandbar sharks and Hawaiian monk seals! What a great start to the season with Fathom Five Divers!
What an incredible experience on the Dewi in Raja Ampat! This was our dear friends - and long time dive buddies - last scuba adventure before hanging up their fins. Highlights were definitely seeing the wobbegong shark, epaulette (walking) shark, and the mobula ray for the first time!!! Plus it was my first sea snake! The boat defined luxury and the crew were incredibly friendly and fantastic! Once again our minds were blown.
A compilation from a few trips out there in July 2024. Amazing to see the Giant Trevally, Tinkers Butterflyfish, Manta Ray - and of course the Monk Seals and Sharks!
Another epic day diving at Niihau thanks to Sea Sport Divers. Of course we had an amazing time diving with the Hawaiian Monk Seals, Sandbar Sharks, and countless butterflyfishes! This day however we also came across an incredibly rare fish called the Humpback Snapper (seen at 1:15). This fish was introduced in the 1950s but didn't seem to take much of a hold in Hawaii. Last summer was the first time Anthony and I had ever seen this fish! This was only the second time we've come across this fish and it was in a different location. So very cool!
Another trip to the Big Island to celebrate Anthony's birthday! We had amazing encounters with the dolphins on several dives, saw some of our favorite fish we don't typically see on Kauai (chevron tang, reticulated butterflyfish, black morph longnose butterfly) and came across an incredibly rare hybrid fish thought to be a bird and sunset wrasse! Unfortunately the north swell kicked us out for a few days allowing us the time to explore South Point, Volcano, and even a beautiful waterfall. On the last day we went on an offshore adventure and had an epic encounter with pilot whales and manta rays, then finally got our tiger shark at the very end!!! What a great trip!
We did 5 dives locally with Sam's, then spent the next 7 days aboard the Siren where we were able to witness one of the snapper spawning events. The amount of fish seemed endless and even brought in a bull shark - my first! This was our first time seeing the leopard shark and bumphead parrotfish as well! The reefs were just incredible, and seemingly very well cared for. We never came across any fishing gear or debris. Our last day we spent kayaking & snorkeling on a fantastic tour where we explored some of the bunkers the Japanese had set up during the war, kayaked around some of the rock islands, and even snorkeled in a "secret" jelly fish lake which we had all to ourselves.
Another epic day at Ni'ihau! While there weren't many sharks around, the monk seals were very active and curious. We got to witness one of the longest monk seal fights (to defend territory) I've ever seen plus the usual awesomeness of critters and bathymetry.
We took our mom to Maui to enjoy the whales and celebrate Anthony's 50th Birthday! We enjoyed some amazing whale watching with Makai Adventures and enjoyed scuba diving both from shore and out with Mike Severns Diving. Truly an unforgettable week making memories :)
What an incredible day of diving to celebrate Anthony's 50th birthday! Swarmed by rainbow runners, beautiful eagle ray, rare reticulated butterflyfish, octopus, and to put the cherry on top - a whale swam by!!!!! Happy Birthday Anthony!
Ni'ihau continues to be one of my most favorite places on this planet! Breathtaking vertical walls and incredible amounts of butterflyfish plus almost guaranteed encounters with the endemic Hawaiian Monk Seals and several species of sharks makes for a great day of diving :)
Such a fun girls dive at Tunnels!! Saw my very first cup coral and Scott Johnson's nudibranch plus the biggest gold lace nudibranch I've ever seen!!!! Also tons of locust nudis, batwing slugs, yellow margins and a very cute white bump :)
Epic adventure to Ni'ihau on the Ho'okahi! We encountered humpbacks right outside the harbor, then came across short-finned pilot whales in the channel accompanied by a couple of silky sharks. We had three epic dives, caught onos on our surface intervals, and ended the day with a whale shark!!!
Horrific flooding from 2 days prior left our primary shore diving spot in pretty bad shape. The dive community rallied like we always do to remove 4 truck loads of mulch and logs, 2 garbage bags full of trash, and countless golf balls. We feel so blessed to be a part of such an awesome dive community! Kauai Strong!
Kalaheo is located on the south shore of Kauai. On the morning of 3-12, we experienced torrential downpour leading to flash flooding. There were rivers across the highways, landslides, etc. About an hour after we got home we received the emergency alerts.
We were so stoked to come across this playful pod of Hawaiian Spinner dolphins while kayaking out to scuba dive. We encountered them again on the way back in! Mahalo Mother Ocean for your beautiful gifts! Music By: Micah Brown
A rare bloom of Luzonichthys earlei (Earle's splitfin anthias) occurred at Lehua this summer, lasting from early / mid June through the end of July. The last time this was documented was about 10 years ago. Here is a glimpse of the event from the four times we were able to get over there while this was first happening. All four of these crossings were on the Ho'okahi with Captain Tara Leota.
What an incredible week of snorkeling adventures from the west side to the north shore! We found a stripey, baby great barracuda, color variant cigar wrasse, plane wreckage, swallow tail and sap-sucking sea slugs, and a SEA HORSE!!! My first ever sea horse in Hawaii! We even came across a fishing pole :)
We just love our pup! She kept us so entertained during our stay at home! Hope you enjoy! - Tillie is an 8 year old maltese mix rescue dog. This was filmed on iPhone11.
Seriously a dive I will not soon forget! An afternoon spontaneous shore dive we are eternally grateful for. These amazing Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins stayed with us for over 30 minutes! It was just the two of us and they just didn't seem to mind at all that we were there. A few times they even swam close to check us out. You can see them mating at 30 seconds in.
Anthony and I feel so blessed to live in Kauai where we can feel safe with the ocean at our footsteps. We are so blessed Hawaii officials understood the ocean was an essential need for us. Unfortunately - Mother Nature had a different plan. However when she opened her skies and let the sun shine, we were able to get in several dives to reset our spirits and calm our minds as the chaos of Coronavirus swept our globe.
