21 yachts made it to the start of the 3rd West Offshore Products Coastal Sprint at 9.30am on April 24th 2021. With 15knots WNW and a one metre swell, Carrera S lead the fleet out through the heads with True Colours, Lord Jiminy and White Noise in the first group behind. After clearing the heads, up went the spinnakers as they turned to head East on the first section of the 55nm race. A great day racing on Bass Strait which will have all onboard home that night.

She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. About the Boat ''SY Red Current'' is a Southerly 31 with the construction of GRP and rigged as a sloop with Aluminium Mast. Her LOA is 31 feet and she has a beam of 10 feet with a draft of 7 feet. (No.. it's not what you're thinking 😜) The Hash in Grenada is a fun run or walk and takes part every weekend on different parts of the island so it's a pretty cool way you can explore the island. Our boat got covered top to bottom in ash from the St Vincent Volcanic Eruption. As I would clean our solar panels they would be full of ash again. It was a struggle. We headed off for some freediving to check out the sea life in this part of the island and searched for some Lobster..... for what felt forever. It seems we are gonna have to get in touch with someone to give us some of the good spots. See ya next week!! In 1997, after missing out on his Olympic rowing medal dream, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014, and married with three children we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. #84 Transat partie 1 (…) 17 mars 2021, à quatre jours près, il y a un an, nous quittions dans une subversion incompréhensive, le Sri Lanka ! C’était le début du confinement mondial, le début d’une crise virale inacceptable par l’Homme, le début d’un chaos insensé, le début de la privation de libertés ! Depuis, des théories ont été soulevées, des hypothèses ont été affirmées, leurs inverses ont été soutenues, attestations, incertitudes, démentis ont bouleversé le monde. Chacun apporte sa vérité, mais finalement qui la connait vraiment ? Certainement pas nous, d’ailleurs, nous essayons d’en savoir le moins possible pour continuer de vivre et être libre ! Dans le premier chapitre de cette pandémie, nous avions pris l’option de nous confiner dans l’océan indien, sans savoir où nous allions atterrir, nous nous sommes laissés porter par nos intuitions. Sans nous priver, nous avons pu profiter du continent Africain. Douze mois plus tard, un vent de doute continue à peser sur l’humanité, rien ne semble avoir évolué dans le bon sens sauf, peut-être, pour notre planète ! Beaucoup de frontières restent fermées, voyager devient un défi et dans ces circonstances, trouver un pays d’accueil est un challenge, pourtant nous nous sentons plus que jamais libres, nous repartons vers notre inconnu, confinés en plein cœur de l’Atlantique ! Les copains sont tous passés, nous nous sommes donnés rendez-vous de l’autre côté, quelque part, sans certitude, là où nous aurons le droit d’accoster ! Nous allons garder contact par iridium. De toute façon, l’imprévu est pour tous et nous savons bien que la situation peut changer d’un bateau à l’autre, alors rien ne sert d’anticiper, nous allons naviguer à vue ! Midi, la bruine ne s’est pas éternisée ce matin et à l’heure de l’appareillage le ciel s’est dégagé. Dans la baie de Walvis, les cargos semblent flotter, les oiseaux marins profitent de leur escale et les otaries se prélassent sur le banc de sable qui enclave notre abri en humant chaque rayon de soleil ! La terre africaine s’estompe dans les heures de notre sillage et devant nous, l’océan, l’immensité de notre évasion s’étale à perte de vue. Juste le temps de nous éloigner sous moteur, prendre le vent et nous devrions, dès que nous serons sortis du courant du Benguela, bénéficier d’un tout harmonieux, houle-alizée. En attendant, nous allons devoir nous accommoder des interventions désordonnées du flux qui ébranle notre Blacky, le faisant couiner non pas de douleur mais de ragages, sûrement le sable de cet environnement désertique qui s’est faufiler un peu partout ! Voilà aussi pourquoi nous préférons toujours partir en début de journée. Un bruit, un accro, un problème de dernière minute, seront toujours plus facile à déceler de jour, qu’en pleine nuit. Un peu de lubrifiant sur les grincements, quelques ajustements, deux-trois réglages et c’est déjà l’heure du soleil couchant pris d’assaut par un groupe de rorquals dont on ne verra que les jets vaporeux dans les couleurs crépusculaires. 18 mars, la nuit a été agitée, des vagues courtes, confuses et lunatiques se sont amusées à nous tambouriner ! C’est vraiment détestable ! Ça vient de ce fichu courant, nous n’en sommes pas encore sortis, c’est toujours lui, qui, vicieux, vient nous crisper l’océan. Sans ce vilain, pas de supplice, l’oscillation serait langoureuse et le tangage léger, mais pas le choix que d’accepter, il est le caractère de la mer… Avec lui, des bateaux de pêche, bien visibles sur AIS et radar, ont capté notre attention. Comme il y a sept ans, la civilité de ces marins est remarquable ! Au petit matin, par VHF, ils indiquent les points GPS de début et de fin de leur filet et tenez-vous bien, celui qui vient de faire son annonce vient de poser un piège de plus de 30 kilomètres de long ! Les premières vingt-quatre heures nous positionnent par 22º02'730 sud et 12º15'150 est, 142,3 milles à l’ouest de la Namibie. Cap 285º, notre Lion noir avance… Un pénible barbouillage s’obstine à m’incommoder mais ça va passer, je le sais, les quarante-huit premières heures vont être dépassées et pour me faire tenir, il y a les Mantos, le coca et les bombons au gingembre ! Aujourd’hui, 162,8 milles, 21º04'622 sud, 09º37'512 est, l’océan a retrouvé une belle couleur bleue… Des poissons volants s’échouent de nuit sur le pont !

Welcome to another entertaining and informative video from the Blown Away channel where we discuss the costly engine condition hydrolock. There is almost nothing on YouTube that addresses this issue and if you or a friend of yours owns a sailboat, you must watch this entire video to learn how to perform the inexpensive do it yourself preventative measures detailed in this video. Perhaps more importantly, by installing our do it yourself system, you can also prevent a boating disaster that might arise from having one or both engines unexpectedly disabled while you’re cruising. Hydrolock is an abnormal condition of any device which is designed to compress a gas by mechanically restraining it; most commonly the reciprocating internal combustion engine. Whooooaaa, don’t let this happen to your boat’s diesel engine like it has to several of our friends! Watch this video to the end to learn what it is and how to prevent it Fortunate for us, we have friends, Franchesco and Yuka, owners of a Leopard 40 catamaran called Oroboro, who warned us of this situation. They had it happen to them twice before they researched and installed an anti-siphon loop. Find their blog at sailingoroboro.com. While having upgrades done at FKG, Eileen and I mentioned hydrolock to owner Gregory Timot of Sint Maarten Marine Engineering Consultants the official Yanmar dealer on the Dutch side and he taught us how to avoid it by preventing sea water from entering the engine through the engine exhaust hose by installing an anti-siphon loop. If you have a catamaran, you have to install two, one for each engine and in this video he installs one to my port engine and then he explains the condition and how the solution works. Next, using his expert work as a guide I installed the anti-siphon loop in the starboard engine compartment and he checked my work. Stay tuned for my workmanship grade and the end of the video where I detail the installation, step by step for you to follow. Now for a little background . . . what is hydrolock? An offshore passage in rough conditions with large waves rushing past the boat such as sailing on a beam reach set up hydrostatic pressure that causes water to siphon into the engine. The anti-siphon loop system we are installed blocks the water siphon, thus preventing hydrolock. For obvious corrosion issues, sea water in your diesel engine is bad news; however, worse yet it can also suffer the mechanically fatal combination of higher starting torque and compression  and non-compressible water in the cylinder preventing the piston from completing its travel; either the engine must stop rotating or a mechanical failure such as bent or broken connecting rods, a fractured crank, a fractured head, a fractured block, crankcase damage, damaged bearings, or any combination of these would occur. Vorbei am berühmten alten Viermaster "Passat" segelten wir die Trave noch ein Stück weiter bis zu einem wunderschönen Ankerplatz in einer kleinen Bucht mit Sandstrand. Aufgrund unseres geringen Tiefgangs konnten wir uns an die Spitze vom Ankerfeld verholen und dann noch einen kleinen Abendspaziergang im Licht der untergehenden Sonne entlang des Ufers machen. IRPCS International Regulations For Preventing Collisions at Sea This City Sailing Tutorial is for the Royal Yachting Association Day Skipper course covering large vessels and the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea. We look at vessels constrained by their draught, vessels restricted in their ability to maneuver, minesweepers, and vessels aground. The video goes into detail in lights and day shapes for the vessels and is part of the City Sailing video tutorials to aid you with an online or classroom Royal Yachting Association Day Skipper with City Sailing. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (IRPCS), also known as the COLREGs, are a set of rules that govern the behavior of vessels on the water. The rules are designed to prevent collisions and ensure the safety of all vessels and their crews. The IRPCS apply to all vessels, from small pleasure craft to large commercial ships, in international waters. The IRPCS cover a wide range of topics, including: Navigation lights and shapes: The IRPCS specify the lights and shapes that vessels must display to indicate their position, direction of travel, and status. Sound signals: The IRPCS specify the sound signals that vessels must use to communicate with each other, especially in restricted visibility conditions. The IRPCS establish a hierarchy of vessels based on their maneuverability and purpose, and specify which vessels have the right of way in various situations. Rules of conduct: The IRPCS specify how vessels should behave in different situations, such as when overtaking, meeting head-on, or crossing paths. Collision avoidance: The IRPCS provide guidelines for avoiding collisions, including keeping a proper lookout, taking early and decisive action, and communicating clearly with other vessels.
