In this episode, we reluctantly pick up anchor after almost a month exploring Greenland. Unlike it's cousin the Long Island Iced tea, this is an exceptionally well balanced mixed drink that's not overwhelmingly boozy...easy to sip and perfect on a warm day. 1 part Cointreau 1 part homemade sorrel 2 parts iced tea (preferably a fruit & mint combo) Combine sorrel, ginger, dried orange zest, and clove in a bowl. Launching in Summer 2022 she will begin by exploring itineraries in Northern Europe and Iceland before heading over to New York. From there she will conduct a sailing to Bermuda before heading to Galveston via the Southern Caribbean. She will then head to Miami for a few weeks before settling in Port Canaveral for the winter season. This was a repositioning cruise on MSC Splendida as she made her way back from her summer season in northern Europe to the Mediterranean. We boarded at Southampton and Splendida would visit La Coruna in Spain. Lisbon the capital of Portugal then onto Gibraltar, Barcelona and finally ending in Genoa where she would be based for the winter season. This was our first cruise on an MSC ship so we didn't really know what to expect but we loved it. She is a beautiful ship and the ship's crew and staff were amazing. After anchoring in Honeymoon Lake and Lagoon 21, we travel another 20 nautical miles and tuck into our sixth anchorage (Pine Island) on the Indian River where wildlife captivates us. We're Esther and Michael, an American couple with writing and photography backgrounds. In 2017, we sold our home in Atlanta and moved aboard a 1994 Island Packet 35 named Hope that needed some love (and boat work!). She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. About the Boat ''SY Red Current'' is a Southerly 31 with the construction of GRP and rigged as a sloop with Aluminium Mast. Her LOA is 31 feet and she has a beam of 10 feet with a draft of 7 feet. She also has an electric swing keel which makes her draft very shallow and easy to enter in shallow water. Every time we post a photo of our boat at anchor we immediately get asked "what's that off your spin pole?" The FlopStopper is a roll reducing unit built by a sailor for sailors to help take some of the motion out of the ocean giving you a better night of sleep. When we first bought Avocet we had a plastic cone system that worked alright, but it was cheaply made and clunky to store. Our neighbor John caught us before sailing out to the islands and offered to let us try out this product he made instead of our cones and after one use we were absolutely hooked! Basically the FlopStopper is a horizontal underwater Venetian blind. The blades (“blind slats”) rotate freely on axle rods, opening on the down-roll when the FlopStopper sinks, and closing on the up-roll to form a flat platform that provides resistance and dampens the rolling motion. There are six 6”x32” blades, each one resting on its own and the neighboring axle. When closed, there are 8.4 square feet of resistance on the up-roll. Unlike every other design, even the slightest rocking motion engages the dampening mechanism: the unit is ofter “closed” at rest, so resists the slightest up-roll, and the blades open easily to sink freely on the down-roll. The best part (only second to its roll reducing) is that this entire unit is made of marine-grade aluminum and breaks down into an easily stowable 10”x36”x4” package, wrapped and strapped into a soft towel. Assembly and deployment takes under 2 minutes and the effect is immediate. After finding cracked bulkheads on my Lagoon 450 catamaran, right when we were about to sail across the pacific, we had to turn around, come back through the Panama Canal, and haul out in Linton Bay Marina, to try straighten the boat, before commencing with the fiberglass repairs. The boat had bent 40mm downwards along the centerline, bringing the hulls upwards, and cracking many other bulkheads along the way. This series will show never before seen footage of how we straightened and strengthened a 45ft production catamaran, in order to be able to complete a circumnavigation.
