SPECIAL EPISODE The 100ft Long Tall Ship Zebu has tragically run aground on the breakwater at Holyhead after breaking her moorings A historical 100ft tall ship has become stuck on a breakwater in north Wales after drifting from its mooring. The Zebu drifted from Holyhead New Harbour on to the wall at about 15:50 BST on Saturday. The two people on board got off the ship, but it remains stuck on the rocks on the foundation of the breakwater and is leaning at an angle. A coastguard salvage operation is being planned and people have been warned to stay away from the breakwater. The ship remained on the breakwater through Saturday night after the tide went out. “There’s good news and bad news.” When someone says that, is it ever really good? 😂 On our way south down the east coast of Florida, we stop in Stuart to have a professional rigger from Mack Sails take a look over our standing rigging. We had a bunch of questions: 1) After being hit by lightning the previous season, we wanted to know, is everything in satisfactory condition? 2) Our mast has been pumping ever since we bought the boat — is there something we can do to fix it? 3) The rig (as far as we know) is original to the boat. Yet it’s been stored indoors and sailed most of its life in fresh water. Do we need to worry about its age? 4) Kirk’s been tuning it himself. Is he on the right track, or way off? This week we continue to explore Bastimentos and Red Frog, we make a spontaneous decision and follow our friends to a bar cave! Not really knowing what to expect we follow them, we take Ralph our dingy and drive a couple kilometers into the depth of the jungle. Realising there were carnivore bats, also called vampire bats put me on edge a little, but our guide was very good and more comfortingly he brought he’s dog! Walking in the beautiful jungle we saw sloths, cacao trees and a huge centipede we felt ready to take on the bat cave. It went completely dark! Traversing through the murky water, not knowing what was underneath our feet, we weren’t so cocky anymore. The water retched our chest and then he asked us to jump... a two meter high jump at the end of the cave. When we get back to the anchorage Kieran adds an extra halyard to Merewether and takes you along for the hole process. Join our crew! We are looking for new crew to join in the future journey. Refit delayed so this is a between refitting episode. Small jobs and daily life while waiting for parts from Sweden. Almost done with everything but four rods are putting everything on hold. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and also been an active regatta sailor. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and been sailing ever since. PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS! I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. I went to a Lagoon dealer for help fixing my boat and they laughed at me, so we sailed 1100 nm across the Caribbean sea to search for Parlay Revival. Colin and Jamie do everything they can to help and sadly they discover that my Lagoon 450 is BENT and the Bulkheads are CRACKED. I’m smiling for the camera, but dying on the inside. After a hairy start leaving Port Vila in the dark We have an epic sail and get Torea cracking along at 10knots on the journey North from Port Vila to Foreland, Epi Island. It’s about 70nm and we get in well before dark so there’s plenty of time to introduce ourselves to the village. We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, two years after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. The end of our 2015 season the starter on our Yanmar engine was becoming unreliable. We obtained an “aftermarket” starter during the winter which was fitted and worked perfectly until halfway through the season we ran out of diesel on the way back from a regatta. We were able to hoist sail and make it back to our mooring ok and the Thursday afternoon of the following week I added fuel, bled the system and tried to start the engine. There was a clunk and the starter stopped dead. I decompressed the engine using the decompression levers and turned the crankshaft pulley by hand to make sure the engine was free. I then cranked the engine successfully with the starter but as soon as I dropped a decompression lever the engine stopped dead again. I removed the starter and found the nosepiece had broken off. I then knew we had a major problem, probably with the ring gear on the flywheel that meshes with the starter pinion. After the boat was on the trailer, in position for the winter and cleared out I removed the engine compartment, lifted out the batteries and assembled the engine crane. The saildrive was braced and strapped to the keel after the propeller was removed. The engine was unbolted from the bellhousing and the engine mount to hull bolts removed. The engine was then moved aft and turned to allow access to the flywheel for removal. As the engine was being moved the starboard engine mount fell apart! The first problem was to remove the coupling plate to allow access to the flywheel to crankshaft bolts. In her previous life GTR, then called Jabberwocky, had sat with a lot of water in the cabin for some time. The water level was almost half way up the engine so the coupling plate was rusted in place. The mounting bolts came out ok but the plate would not move. It was persuaded to come out by using a bearing drawer leg put through the centre hole and tightened on to a piece of channel iron The “tide” mark can be seen on the flywheel! The flywheel was then unbolted, removed and taken back to my workshop for cleaning and examination. The ring gear teeth were counted (97) and examined. It can be seen that the teeth were in a pretty poor state. A new ring gear and a pair of engine mounts were ordered along with a couple of hoses and filters for the annual service. When the parts arrived it was easy to see just how worn the teeth were. The outside of the new ring gear was determined at this stage. After checking that the new ring gear was correct preparations were made to remove the old one. With access to oxy acetylene it is possible to expand the old ring gear of the flywheel but I no longer have that access. I instead reverted to a method I used when building racing car engines. Two spaced centre punch marks are made on the ring gear. A drill depth is then measured against the new ring gear to prevent damage to the flywheel. Two holes are drilled in the old ring gear and it is split off using a cold chisel. The flywheel was then cleaned and the new ring gear suspended on a rod from a vice in preparation for heating. It is necessary to heat the ring gear sufficiently to expand it to a grater diameter than the flywheel. This takes around 200 deg C. Any excess heat can ruin the ring gear but trying to fit it if it is not sufficiently expanded will also destroy it. I measured the diameter of the flywheel and set my callipers 1 mm above that figure. I also used a grease pencil that melts at 200 deg c to allow me to monitor the temperature. The ring gear was heated evenly until the vernier fitted in side it. It was then held in welding gauntlets and dropped over the flywheel. It immediately gripped the flywheel and became cool. Re-assembling the flywheel to the engine requires to use of a torque wrench to be sure the bolts are tight enough but not too tight. The torque figures are given in the engine service hand book. A tool had to be made to hold the flywheel to allow it and the coupling plate to be torqued. A length of aluminium bar and 2 M8 socket head cap screws mated up with balancing holes in the flywheel. This tool allowed the flywheel and coupling plate to be properly secured. The engine was then re-installed with new engine mounts, serviced and the engine compartment re-assembled in preparation for testing. On s’amuse à l’île de Tintamarre de St-Martin avant de lever l’ancre et naviguer jusqu’à St-Barthélemy pour quelques jours, un autre pays des Caraïbes à découvrir. Op Hemelvaartsdag vaar ik van Terschelling buitenom naar Texel. Zodra ik Texel gerond heb moet ik tegen de wind in kruisen om bij Oudeschild aan te komen. De wind is 21 knopen. Ik vaar met 7.2 knopen snelheid en 3.0 knopen dwarsstroom de haven van Oudeschild in. Ik heb wel eerst even toestemming gevraagd. Bislang haben wir die Biskaya überquert, schwere Situationen in Spanien und Portugal gemeistert, den Atlantik in 22 Tagen überquert und wir haben es geschafft unseren Motor auf Guadeloupe zu reparieren. Jetzt geht unser Weg weiter richtung Westen. Die nächsten 2 1/2 Jahre werden wir nutzen um den Pazifik zu durchqueren, den indonesischen Raum zu erkunden und letztendlich nach der Umrundung des Kap der guten Hoffnungen wieder Fuß auf europäisches Land zu setzen.
