Behind every great sailing team in major offshore races is a shore team of equal calibre. For the Black Jack team, which sailed Peter Harburg’s 100 footer to a Line Honours in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, this shore included such luminaries as renowned navigator, Juan Vila and weather gurus Roger ‘Clouds’ Badham and Bruce Buckley. Here, skipper Mark Bradford describes some of the key decisions that they had helped plan in the days before the race, that were pivotal to Black Jack’s winning moves.

Nous souhaitons coopérer avec des associations et des particuliers que nous rencontrerons lors de notre mission. Au programme : dépollution, sensibilisation et revalorisation des déchets. En parallèle de cela, nous contribuerons également à la recherche sur la pollution plastique au sein de nos océans en réalisant des échantillonnages de microplastiques.

Having used the old half broken paddle a lot last week I realised that it needed replacing so I have a root around and find the perfect wood to make a couple of new ones for the boat.Making new paddles for the Black Pig from cuting the wood to varnising.

Deuxième nuit sous tente chaude cette saison. Cette fois, j'ai pour objectif de remplacer le poteau de soutien de la tente par une branche de bois, de me faire un feu de camp extérieur, de tester du nouveau matériel (matelas de sol) et surprise, d'utiliser du sapinage comme revêtement sur le sol. Une belle transition entre ''fin automnale'' et ''début de l'hiver''. À mes yeux, 4 éléments importants sont à prendre en considération lors du visionnage de cette vidéo: 1- Il est déconseillé d'utiliser une branche pour soutenir le tipi. Néanmoins, j'ai sélectionné un rondin fraîchement tombé, tout à fait vert (gorgé d'eau) et d'un bon diamètre. Je n'ai pas réussi à le plier avec mon propre poids. Je l'ai également éloigné plus que nécessaire de la source de chaleur. 2- Les règles habituelles de sécurité n'ont pas été suivies pour démarrer le feu à l'extérieur. Il aurait fallu nettoyer le sol de matière potentiellement inflammable telles que les feuilles mortes sur un plus grand diamètre. Cela a été fait plus tard, mais il est difficile de l'observer à la caméra. 3- Le sapinage était frais, gorgé d'eau. Seule une branche a été rapprochée au petit matin, car je me suis servi d'un petit bout comme éponge à récurer pour la vaisselle. Avec le poêle tout près qui émet une belle chaleur, il vaut mieux éloigner toute matière inflammable. Il s'est avéré efficace d'utiliser les branches de sapin pour rendre plus propre l'entrée de la tente et conserver l'équipement tel que le sac à dos au sec. 4- Des consignes claires doivent être établies lorsque lorsqu'on travaille avec des outils et que les enfants sont tout près. It's the end of 2021, and with snow on the ground and cold weather, we spent evenings reminiscing about our cruise - the take-aways, both good and bad. So, to follow are some of our key points - but the main one is to Go Outside Your Comfort Zone!!! It's both frightening and liberating. What we found is that the cruise enabled and strengthened our boating skills, because we were forced to use them every single day. And we had fun. Which was the whole point, really. The timing of our cruise fell on the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. I urge all of you to read on this topic, and contemplate the impact of the Residential School systems on the Indigenous community and our country. I'm not trying to be political, but I think this is a topic of grave importance to all Canadians. For us, being in the 1000 Islands was the perfect place to contemplate the colonial relationship with the indigenous peoples of Canada.
