D'oh, I knew I would get bitten by this sailing bug. So the story goes like this... ... I spoke to a friend who knows someone who knows another chap who has an old boat he doesn't want. Did I want to go and buy it off him for a bargain as he's looking to get rid of it. So of course I couldn't help myself. But, and what a bargain I got. I end up with an old Large folding Seahopper boat, with almost unused 2-stroke engine, oars and a bag of accessories including an anchor, handles, bow spray cover and some old ropes too for less than £500. The boat needs a little bit of work and i'm sure the motor will need a service but all within my capabilities so there we go. As there is a lot of money being made, Large mining companies find it very difficult to acquire ground to expand the leases, so what I have to do, is buy up other small leases to have ground to access for Mining. Black Gold has recently attended a integrated government supported training seminar, to explain how the process works. While we were at the seminar we met many professional minors and investors. One of the best knowledge we took away, was from one of the investors who recently sold his lease for $800,000 Au to a Chinese company. His original investment was $7000. He said he wasn’t sure if the Chinese company was ever going to mine or they were just locking away the gold reserves. And in the future could resell a lease for even more. Craig Johnson, Truk Master's Chief Officer and Cruise Director, talks about the IJN Heian Maru, one of the many wrecks visited on our itineraries of Truk Lagoon. Truk Lagoon is best known for its world-class wreck diving and variety of wrecks ranging from supply vessels (Maru) to planes and a submarine, all tightly packed into a coral reef lagoon. During WWII, the Japanese fleet used Truk Lagoon as one of their main staging points for attacks on the allied forces. In 1944 the American-led “Operation Hailstone” surprised the fleet resulting in the plethora of dive sites which we can see there today. With over 60 wrecks to explore, it’s easy to appreciate why divers travel to this area time and time again. The Heian Maru is one of the largest ship in the lagoon. It was originally used as a cargo ship, is 165m (510ft) in length and lies on her port side in 35m (115ft) of water. These are the outtakes and some of the extra footage from the crossing Alone Across An Ocean video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AZXXKj0p0s ) Hello Friends, This is an episode of clips I couldn't fit into the long format video but felt they would be of interest to sailors. I shot over 300 video files over the 32 days at sea and A LOT of stuff ended up on the cutting room floor. This episode is a collection of some of those outakes. Its a rough edit and meant to be a supplement to the Alone Across an Ocean episode. I have formatted it with the day headers so you have an idea of the timeline the same as I did with the longer video. The drone footage has no sound on it because no drone footage has sound unless the editor adds some in post. That footage is me fighting the drones automatic attempt to return to the location it took off from several miles astern of Triteia, a function it would not let me turn off before I flew it because the GPS signal in the ocean on my iPhone was so weak. I crash landed it into the cockpit and suffered some pretty bad cuts to my hands trying to remove the battery since it would not shut down. It maybe broken from the crash but at least it didn't end up in the ocean. Other than that its mostly just footage of me talking about ships business. Extra episode - Hey guys, it's been a bit quiet here. The reason is that we decided to sell the boat to explore new horizons individually. That's why, this is our last episode. We had an amazing sailing season together, going from Almerimar in the South of Spain towards the Balearics, sailing Formentera, Ibiza and Mallorca. Rob Gough and John Saul returned to their home waters on the Derwent River just on sunset this evening, aboard their Lombard designed Sidewinder, as the inaugural Two Handed Division Line Honours winners. This well-tested boat (formerly Conrad Coleman’s entry in the Global Ocean Race) stood up well to the conditions of the first night at sea. Here they describe their race and the multiple challenges of racing two-handed.
