Through every refit we have become more familiar with Avocet’s design and layup, touching nearly every inch of the boat in the process, but there was one final piece that was left mostly untouched by us - the mast. We had already done a bit of rig work prior, fabricating all-new chainplates and replacing our cap shrouds but we knew there was much more to be done. From the records we have, our mast was installed in 2004, but it was showing signs of wear and beginning to fail in crucial areas such as the shivs. So, back to the boatyard, we went with tools in hand for a relatively quick but major upgrade. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V700 with a Rode External mic with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action, underwater scenes and small blogging is done with two Osmo action cams. Some boat shots are done with a Dji gimbal camera. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. We took off from Maldives to Seychelles crossing with our 2 buddy boats: Zatara and Rehua. It did not look like the perfect weather forecast, by any means, but the season for this crossing was about to close in Northern hemisphere... Therefore, we didn't know if there would be a better time to cross in the coming weeks... Well... to say the least - it did not go well... We have never run so many fuel calculations, measured our speed, RPM, and burn rates for the slightest improvement in economy... We just HAVE to make it! See it for yourself! Can a CATAMARAN Really SAIL UPWIND?? (Even With HOLES in the SAIL) | Harbors Unknown Ep. 60 We are sailing to the Abacos in the Bahamas! The Abacos are a one hundred twenty mile chain of islands surrounding the Sea of Abaco, in the northern part of the Bahamas. This area was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, but we’ve heard they’re recovering quite well and eager for visitors to return. The barrier islands are known for beautiful beaches and stunning reefs and we can’t wait to start exploring. We've got great wind, but it's a bit tricky because it's coming pretty much from where we want to go. So we need to sail upwind in the narrow Sea of Abaco in our catamaran. Thankfully our Seawind 1600 has daggerboards so we're able to navigate these waters and make good headway. When we arrived at Green Turtle Cay we were eager to check out the reef on the Atlantic side and see if we could catch some dinner. The reef was absolutely beautiful but we didn't see much in the way of sea life. It looks like we'll need some local knowledge to find some fish to spear. Van het vliegveld van Maderia halen we mijn vriend Frank op die alle COVID beperkingen in Nederland een beetje beu is en graag uit wil waaien op de oceaan. Na de nodige voorbereidingen vertrekken we uit Quinto do Lorde richting Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, een oversteek van zo'n 290nm. We hebben harde wind, tussen de 25 en 30 knopen en na een aantal uren geeft de drive van de stuurautomaat het op. Een ongewilde gijp en een doorgeknipte reeflijn tot gevolg. We hervatten onze tocht met dubbel gereefd grootzeil en uitgeboomde genua en de windvaan als trouwe roerganger. We laten het anker na 43 heftige uren 's nachts in Las Palmas vallen. We gaan uiteraard snel op zoek naar de oorzaak van het falen van de stuurautomaat. Jarenlang heb ik ervan gedroomd om zeilend te gaan waar de wind me brengt. In 2020 was het dan eindelijk zover en heb ik samen met Felia een prachtige reis gemaakt naar Scandinavië en de Baltische staten. Onze Eva, een Atlantic 43 uit 2007, is een aluminium zeiljacht met hefkiel en gebouwd en uitgerust voor reizen naar plaatsen die net achter de horizon liggen. Vanaf 2021 vaar ik met wisselende bemanning zuidwaarts. Ik vind het leuk om onze avonturen met jullie te delen. I've had my Mavic Pro drone for many years, from when it was released and I doub't there's a single original part left on it now. After the last crash at the Lake I fixed the gimble and one of the rotors but I still have errors that tell me the main board is also damaged. Whilst you can replace the mainboard, it's a big job and an expensive one and a lot of people get it wrong so it's time to retire him and find a new drone.
