Finally Free Ep64 This time on Sailing Intermission we not only got out of the marina…we moved. For Karen the trip was a little tense filled with a fixed bridge and little clearance for the mast, a channel that was often quite shallow and always narrow, plus a draw bridge. We’re still getting used to Isabella. The hydraulic steering is a little different than what we are used to. We have new hoses on the system and the pump is made by Hynautics. Next time, we finish our move with more bascule bridges, got stuck in the sand and a traveled through a lock. Steve was battling bouncing off the steel wall of the lock wall. EP 206: Assessing the Damage | Can We Fix It? After exploring the town of Grande Anse D'Arlet, we opt to tour the beautiful waters of the anchorage. It was absolutely insane to see what sea life was living right under our noses. After diving the anchorage, we headed off to the next stop which was Anse Noire. A black volcanic beach that is connected to a white sandy turquoise water beach. Best of both worlds in one stop. We explored the town before hitting the waters. #146 Bahamas - Great Inagua ✍️28 février, 13 heures, le temps est superbe ! Le maitre de port est sur le quai de la toute petite marina de Matthews Town. Un petit air de Danny Glover, fort sympathique. Il vient de nous indiquer les procédures à suivre et de prévenir immigration et douanes de notre arrivée. Rien de plus compliqué qu’ailleurs ! Il suffit de s’acquitter de 300 dollars pour un permis de croisière de trois mois, 40 dollars par personne pour une assurance santé, qui couvre le rapatriement et 40 dollars, d’un je ne sais quoi, que je mets sur le compte de l’over time. C’est à peine croyable ! Nous sommes aux Bahamas ! Inexplicablement, nous avions mis cette destination dans le domaine de l’inaccessible. Pourquoi ? Aucune idée, nous imaginions peut-être le nom accroché à un mythe ! Pourtant nous avons bien ouï-dire par quelques récits flatteurs, de l’authenticité du lieu ! Nous y sommes juste depuis quelques heures et nous voilà déjà sous le charme de cette eau piscinale. L’appel du bleu, de la transparence, de cet éclat sans nom. Nous sommes subjugués par la visibilité ! Dans cette diaphanéité, notre Blacky doit être irréprochable, soigné, débarrassé de chaque coquillage, même infime soit-il. On dit que les premiers habitants de Great Inagua seraient arrivés depuis les Turks and Caïcos en 1803. La ville ou plutôt le village, vu la taille, était à l’époque, une plaque tournante des Bahamas pour les débardeurs et les travailleurs contractuels, assurés dans les années 80 du même siècle, d’y trouver des opportunités financières. Après ses heures de gloire, vers 1932, Matthews Town était décrite comme désespérée et désolée. Aujourd’hui, l’activité principale tourne autour de la mine de sel et la population ne dépasse pas les 1000 habitants. Bien plus nombreux, sont les chiens, il y en a, à tous les coins de rue ! Un peu comme en République Dominicaine me direz-vous. Oui, sauf que là, avec leurs petits yeux pervers, ils ne sont pas si engageants et nous en perdons toute notre assurance ! Tu parles d’aventuriers, complètement terrorisés par quelques molosses chétifs ! Les inséparables perruches, elles, sont beaucoup plus aimables. C’est la bonne surprise ! Nous les avons découvertes grâce à nos déviations canines. Elles s’évertuent à pipier, siffler et jacasser pour communiquer. Si seulement nous étions doués des mêmes sens pour correspondre à distance ! Cela nous éviterait de partir à la recherche de notre carte sim ! Pas dit non plus que nous serions entendus de l’autre côté de la planète ! Mon capitaine est tout émoustillé à l’idée de débuter nos navigations dans ce bassin de croisière fantastique. À 10 milles, Man O War Bay. Entre les quilles de Black Lion et le fond, cinq mètres, cinq mètres d’une eau si limpide, qu’elle en est trompeuse. Les patates de corail nous illusionnent, les algues dansent, les poissons bleus s’ennuagent, et là, cette tortue, qui semble vouloir nous complaire. Plus au nord, dans la mangrove serpentante, la clarté ne déroge à la tendance. Un requin, peut être citron, s’intrigue de nos kayaks, tout comme ce barracuda téméraire, qui fait son apparition, à la jupe de notre lion noir ! We have 3 days to get a heap of solar panels installed somewhere on Paikea before a weather window opens for our trip down to warmer weather in the Canary Islands. We can't source any aluminium to repair/modify the existing broken frame so Shayne is using some left over C-tech carbon fibre battens. We ended up running out of time and mounting the new bracket above the old one. Not really the most ideal situation given that we are always harping on about the weight but hey sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. At least we have the solar panels safely out of the way for sailing and we can dismantle the old frame and mount those panels to the roof top at a later stage. If you don't need to pump the waste tank overboard yourself then it can be simplified with only two valves. The plumbing diagram is seen at 11:07. Parts Used: Lavac toilet (When ordering you'll need to know which pump version you will use. The one they call T/A is for surface mounting on top a bulkhead with hoses exposed. Model U/D is for mounting within a cabinet and hides the hoses. Here we use the U/D model. Here's a supplier for the U/D at $765 although the picture shores the wrong pump. I used to get these for under $500 but prices have gone way up recently. They are more commonly available in the UK. Here's a US supplier: https://www.fisheriessupply.com/lavac-toilet-popular-model-manual-toilet/tlz0802 3 Forespar Y-valves 1.5" vented loop 5/8, 3/4 and 1.5" hoses and clamps. I used Shields 148 hoses but you could use a more odor resistant marine hose for the tank connections where the waste water will sit for extended periods. Thru-deck vent fitting West Multi-Caulk for hoses Lifecaulk polysulfide for seacocks 1.5" and 3/4" Groco bronze seacocks. The reason I don't use Marelon seacocks is because the handles are flimsy and when the seacock has barnacle growth in it then it jams and the handles break off. Nauta 14.5 gal tank and fittings Notes: To be legal in US inshore waters you need to lock the y-valve in the waste tank position. I use a cable zip tie that's easy to cut and replace. If the y-valve handle doesn't have a hole in it then I drill a hole to pass the cable tie through and then around the hose to secure it. The bilge pump has an inspection port that needs some silicone lubricant on the o-ring so that it doesn't jam or leak. An alternative to this installation is to mount a tank up high for a gravity feed discharge but that is not practical with the limited space on most small boats. Le 21/03/2022, jour du printemps dans la baie de Deshaie, nous décidons de nous baigner juste avant de prendre la route pour St-Martin. Quel bonheur de constater que les dauphins sont là aussi ! Nous avons la chance d'observer un couple de dauphin qui effectue une danse amoureuse. Nager parmi les dauphins à l'état sauvage, quelle drôle de sensation ! Les voir nager aussi près de nous, c'est une première dans notre vie. Nous partons donc pour St-Martin heureux. En revanche, la navigation retour St-Martin/Guadeloupe fût une vraie galère ! En effet, aux alentours de 18h30 à l'approche de St-Christopher, la goupille qui maintient l'étai du génois cède. Doudou à immédiatement réagi en affalent immédiatement la grand voile et en souquant le mât avec la drisse du SPI. Quelle aventure les moussaillons !!!

The cost to cruise the paradise that is San Blas is less than we’d imagined. Our new spot, a beautiful island with deep water all the way up to the shore, has that untouched feeling. But when a veggie boat selling Budweiser comes by we begin to understand that not only is this a very convenient place to sail, it’s also pretty cheap, too. We load up on veggies at very good prices and also experience the underwater world for this first time with a dive in super clear water. Pretty coral and brightly colored fish abound. A bonfire on the beach with friends rounds out the day, and for dinner we enjoy chicken and a salad with everything purchased from the food boat! We also try our first homemade focaccia bread - yum! Before long we wake up in a new island, with a new and beautiful view - This time of the mountain range near mainland Panama. Coffee on the hook with our buddy boat nearby is the best way to begin a day. Of course it’s a boat so we’re dealing with some issues - Weak denatured alcohol (purchased by mistake in Bocas del Toro) is making cook time super slow and both our dinghy - and dinghy wheels - have leaks. Bill pumps the dingy up and we opt to deal with broken things later and head to the beach instead. A nearby island features a gorgeous white sand beach and once again we hit the water for a snorkel. We’re blown away by the giant, healthy coral and some of the clearest water we’ve ever seen. We see many fish, spiny lobsters and a puffer fish, hanging out in a shallow cave. We’ve now been in San Blas for almost three weeks and besides it’s beauty and easy, protected anchorages we’re also pleasantly surprised by how well priced the food and booze is here. Not to mention the convenience of it’s delivery.
