This time on sailing SV CUBA, we escape the heat and dive into the crystal-clear waters around Spartia Beach in Kefalonia, get sporty on our paddleboards, and find a mysterious, uninhabited island. If you like to be part of our journey, please consider becoming a Patreon @ https://www.patreon.com/svcuba It’s early morning and already over 36 degrees Celsius, the water around our sailboat looks like a swimming pool and since we arrived in the dark after a sail down the east coast of Kefalonia once again, we had not seen our new neighborhood in the daylight. This coastline of the Ionian Islands is a perfect place to put up the mainsail and genoa and just glide along and see the sunshine reflecting off the hull of the boat. Although we only saw a few other sailors on our journey from the north of Greece, this area is considered one of the best places to cruise and sail during the hot summer months in Greece. We put our snorkelling gear on and check out what’s happening below the surface of the azure waters. Kefalonia is a place with many natural freshwater springs and the water near the coast is therefore brackish and can have very different temperatures from one moment to the next. The next day we decide to put our inflatable paddleboards to good use and explore the coast above the surface. Spartia has a stunning coastline with steep cliffs and rugged rocks, perfect for some stand-up paddling. Soon we notice a lone rocky island in the distance that evokes our curiosity. We swap the boards for the dinghy, to check out the mysterious rock island. From afar we can already make out an impressive stone stairway on this barren isle. What might be found at the end of the stairs, we don’t know. But we surely did not stop to get some answers and took you along for the adventure. We are Enrique (Kiki) from Cuba and Sarah (Salsa) from Germany on a mission to sail around the world. This is a cool metal lathe trick that I didn’t know before. As an example I made a copper reducer fitting to show the trick. Instead of a lathe tool I simply used a piece of stainless round steel. The trick is rolling the part instead of cutting. I was surprised how well it works. At the end of the video I show how to connect the hoses with a self-made tool without the use of hose clamps.

The final video of our Kimberley adventure. We leave Koolama Bay to catch the last of the flood tide before battling the tide and anchoring behind Eric Island short of the Berkeley River. In the morning we sail on to the Berkeley a cross the sand bar and motor upstream to Casuarina falls. We find superb swimming holes and aboriginal rock art above the falls. Heading further upstream we head for the rock bar at the end of the navigable water visiting the amphitheater and the perennial falls along the way. On our final day we head downstream to shower at Casuarina falls once more before exploring Pauls Creek and then reading Neringa for the 3 day 2 night crossing of Bonaparte Gulf the next day. We depart at 2am the following day to cross the bar at high tide and make the most of the ebb for the first 6 hours. Grib files show promising conditions for the first 2 days but a worrying strengthening of the winds rounding into Darwin. The crossing goes to plan despite some of the roughest seas on the last day rounding the Cox Peninsular into Darwin. After retrieving the car and trailer from Derby we load Neringa after 1372 nautical miles on the water in readiness for the 5000 km road trip home.

Pour ne rien gâter à cette avant-première, le constructeur a bien voulu nous confier le nom de ce catamaran – Aura 51. A l’image d’un certain Athéna 38 lancé en 1994, l’Aura 51 se passe d’un nom d’île… mais conserve un « a » à la fin. Le premier modèle affiche des lignes très conformes aux derniers catamarans signés Berret/Racoupeau comme le Samana 59. Les superstructures sont affinées, les étraves inversées et le plan de voilure puissant – il faut bien compenser un déplacement à la hausse. Le constructeur a conservé également le double poste manœuvres/barre à mi-hauteur. Du côté des innovations, on note la très grande ouverture nacelle/cockpit avec le meuble cuisine pour partie extérieur et la possibilité d’installer 2 000 Wp de panneaux solaires. L’Aura 51 a été testé en mer au cours d’une navigation hivernale en Bretagne – l’occasion pour le chantier d’enregistrer des moyennes souvent supérieures à 10 nœuds par bonne brise, et d’organiser un shooting photos original même si la température de l’eau était fraîche… Très attendu sur le marché, l’Aura 51 sera sans doute le principal concurrent du Lagoon 51. The sailboat refit has officially begun and that means that we have to take a lot of things apart before we can start putting it all back together again. We pump contaminated diesel fuel out of the boat, take off the Max Prop, disassemble the shaft coupler, pull the prop shaft out of the back of the boat, remove the old stuffing box, and tap the cutless bearing out from inside the boat. Alexis grew up along the coast of Brittany, France, where he spent his time racing dinghies. After immigrating to the United States as a young man, Alexis further developed his interest in offshore cruising through his continued racing on the waters of New England and the Bahamas. Professionally, Alexis began his nautical career as a charter captain, sailing the storied seas of French Polynesia on a Fountaine-Pajot Marquises 56 catamaran where he developed and honed a talent for sharing and communicating his love for bluewater sailing to his worldly guests. Utilizing this newfound knowledge and skillset, Alexis instituted a successful yacht sales and management program to develop the fleet in non-French territories. This undertaking gave him substantial experience in the many facets of yacht sales and brokerage in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. Alexis, who has an affinity for performance cats, has sailed extensively on multihulls, is bilingual English-French and now operates out of St. Martin and Florida while spending summers in his homeland, France. After we receive our second COVID shots, it’s finally time to leave Weipa and head west. We do the final preparations for the off and set sail across the Gulf of Carpentaria. The wind has been 30 knots for the past few weeks, but when we leave it dies down to only 3 knots! After three very choppy days and nights sailing across the Gulf we arrive at Groote island, a majestic place. Thanks for watching. Until next time.
